10-16-22 - 2023 MLB Draft: an early look at the ACC

2. OF Jack Hurley, Virginia Tech.
Bat: L. Throw: R. 6', 185 lbs. Born 3/13/2002. Hometown: Boalsburg, PA.
2022: 14 HR, .375/.452/.664, 10 SB, 51/32 K/BB in 58 games.
Jack Hurley might be the most exciting player in the ACC. An immediate contributor as a freshman in 2021, he broke out as one of the best hitters in arguably the best lineup in college baseball in 2022, slashing an incredible .375/.452/.664 in 58 games. He brings a high energy style of play to the ballpark, taking big swings in the box, searching for extra bases where he can find them, and running full speed into the outfield wall if need be.
He's not huge at six feet tall, but he generates a ton of torque with those big swings and taps above average power consistently in games, naturally lifting and driving the ball to all fields. He previously struggled with swing and miss, striking out 30.8% as a freshman, but he dropped that rate to 18.8% in 2022 and hopes to continue trending in the right direction in 2023.
He hammers fastballs and is improving against offspeed stuff, so that will be his primary focus in 2023. Defensively, he payed left field last year while Gavin Cross manned center, but he's plenty fast enough to slide over to center this year and should be able to stick there in pro ball as well. It's a profile littered with 55's and if he can continue to improve against offspeed stuff, he has a chance to become an impact player at the major league level that provides value in a multitude of ways.

Andrew Cedano, RHP, Locust Grove, Ga.
Class of 2023 | PG Rank: 500
Home Plate Chili Dogs
Cedano has been on the radar for a while now but has really turned the corner with his fastball command and uptick in velocity to 91 mph over the summer. One of the top uncommitted arms in the state that has been putting together some eye-popping numbers with 45 strikeouts in his last 25 innings pitched with 12 walks. Cedano can pitch in many roles as a starter or multiple inning reliever with the ability to take the ball whenever called upon.

102 3B
Parks Harber
Georgia
Harber is a power-first third baseman with above average juice in the bat and a budding hit tool. There's swing and miss here, but you're buying the power. Harber is a below-average athlete with an average arm. Scouts are split on whether he's a third baseman or first baseman at the next level. His body continues to mature and add strength, slowing him down a tick. At the end of the day, it's the bat you're investing in here and, like every player, the stick will ultimately dictate his future role.

10. Colorado Rockies
Arjun Nimmala, Shortstop, Strawberry Crest
There isn’t a player that definitively has the look and style of a Rockies pick here, but they appreciate bat speed, impact and athleticism, something Nimmala has in spades. Nimmala’s athletic testing and in-game performances this summer have really opened eyes.
He’s a lanky infielder who could grow off the shortstop position, but it might not matter if he’s the impact bat some now project. Nimmala has super quick hands and a strong arm, with athletic actions on the dirt. He could end up at any infield position or in the outfield. He’ll be just 17 at the time of the draft, so models love him.

13. Matt Shaw, SS, Maryland
Shaw slammed 22 homers during the spring and then topped the Cape Cod League in hitting (.360), on-base percentage (.432), slugging (.574), OPS (1.006) and extra-base hits (17) en route to the summer circuit's MVP award. Scouts love his power and non-stop motor, but he lacks quickness and range at shortstop and likely will wind up at second or third base in pro ball.

Matt Shaw looks to be interesting here.
Nimmala as well.
Nimmala is just 17 and just starting to show pop potential
Shaw could come off the board as the first true second baseman
One thing about this draft.
Technically, the Mets won't have a first round pick this year.
