#83                 Murf Gray                3B, Fresno State

20/years old                       6' 4"               210

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 45 | Overall: 45

Fresno State has not had a player taken in the top three rounds since right-hander Ryan Jensen was a first-rounder in 2019. A hitter hasn’t gone that early since Taylor Ward in the first round back in 2015, and of course, its greatest player -- the 6-foot-7 Aaron Judge -- went in 2013. Gray doesn't have Judge's profile, but he was the 2023 Mountain West Conference freshman of the year. He then hit 10 homers with a .504 slugging percentage as a sophomore before opening eyes with one of the best offensive performances (.329/.367/.500) in the Cape Cod League last summer.

While Gray isn’t as big of a prospect as Judge in any measurement, as a 6-foot-4 right-handed hitter, he’s not that far off size-wise. Gray puts his extra-large frame to good use, showing big raw power to all fields, though his over-the-fence pop comes mostly to his pull side. He has a solid approach and can recognize spin, but while he doesn’t swing and miss too much, he does need to cut down on his tendency to chase.

Gray has plenty of arm for third base, but a lack of foot speed with a fair first step at best might make it tough for him to stick at the hot corner. A team interested in his bat's power potential could send him out there or see whether he's athletic enough to man an outfield corner to make good use of that arm, but he could end up at first base down the road.

40. Triston “Murf” Gray – 3B

HT/WT: 6’4/230 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Fresno State | Age: 21.6

The 2023 Mountain West Freshman of the Year, Gray endured his early-season struggles before going on a tear in the second half of the year, which carried over to the Cape.

On the Cape, Gray slashed .329/.367/.500 with nine doubles and five home runs, putting himself on the map with authority. A physical infielder, Gray has a great mix of pure contact and power at the dish. While Gray is rather aggressive and chases often, his contact skills are excellent, posting a 95% in-zone contact rate at Fresno State this spring.

He feasts on heaters and seldom misses them, plus there are not many warts with spin. His bat speed is outstanding and it’s above-average power to all fields, playing best to his pull-side.

It’s a loud, loud bat and a solid mold of clay for a development program. He has the body and arm to fit at third base, though his range and athleticism are fringy. He projects to stick there, though a move to right field could be possible.

3B Triston “Murf” Gray - Fresno State

Prospects Live Ranking: #34

Coming in at 6’4, 220lbs, Murf Gray is a DUDE physically as he is built like a horse. The 2023 Mountain West Player of the Year earned this accolade because of his performance at the plate where he slashed .296/.358/.504 with 12 2B, 10 HR, and 52 RBI. He continued to produce at the plate this summer in the Cape Cod League against some of the better competition in the US. The power and contact skills combine make him an absolute threat at the plate. He couples excellent contact rates with solid exit velos thanks to his above-average bat speed, strength, and feel for the strike zone. Gray will eat up any fastball that comes his way, but can struggle with spin from time-to-time. He handles the hot corner pretty well and has a strong arm that helps him stick there. As of now, he will likely stick at third base, but there could be a possibility that he moves to the outfield in the future. Gray has day-one draft potential with his offensive upside if he refines his hit tool and maintains his value in other areas of the game.
