The spring training season is already half done, and we are all learning some things about how our team is shaping up. There have been disappointments and surprises as well as expected progression of our stars. Some troubling injury news prompts today's question.
With injuries to two starting pitchers (Manaea and Montas), the starting catcher (Alvarez), the utility infielder (Madrigal), and with two outfielders (Nimmo, Marte) slow to come up to speed with other nagging physical ailments, the team will not be at 100% to start the season. If you were the GM or the Manager of the team, would you finalize the roster with experienced veterans to back fill the IL guys, or would you take the risk to push the youth movement and back fill with prospects that are not fully up the growth curve? I am talking about Sproat vs Canning, Senger vs a veteran catcher acquisition(McCann), Acuna vs Canario/Azocar.

1. I want Sproat to go to Syracuse and throw ice balls
2. I want Tomas Nido back on the Mets
3. I want Jeff McNeil in left and Acuña on second
Unfortunately, our prospects are nowhere near ready. Except for Baty or Acuna..
I would give Meneses first crack if Marte isn't ready.
I would love to give Senger a shot, but unfortunately, he has to hit and he's not ready. Lorenz was fully exposed when he has to hit every day. I would go the veteran minimum route like McCann or Nido (if cut) so they don't have to rush Alverez back.
Veteran catcher, young elsewhere.
McNeil out with Oblique strain
Kills opening day
That means Winkler will be spending time in the OF...yikes.
Baty will get some AB's
I agree that Sproat should get a little more refining in the minors - Reese's earlier article brings out some good points regarding pitcher maturation. Other than that, I think the early season is the best time to get some youth reps in the lineup. Less pressure in the early season, spring training points of emphasis are still fresh, and the vets don't have to play every day of the season - save strength for the end.
Disagree Paul. Then, when you want to send down a kid, he will be bummed. If you want to use a kid, send him down for a week or so, and then bring him up for two weeks while telling him that he will go back down. That way he understands that the organization wants him to do more in the minors. By putting him on the 26 for opening day, I feel it tells him that he’s arrived.
