#24 Dean Curley
SS Tennessee
20/years old
6' 3" 212
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 50 | Arm: 65 |
Field: 55 | Overall: 50
Curley stood out with his physicality and tools as a
California high schooler, but not enough for pro teams to lure him away from
his Tennessee commitment. The only freshman to earn a spot in the Volunteers'
stacked 2024 lineup, he homered three times in the NCAA tournament and went
6-for-12 in the College World Series finals to help win the program's first
national championship. The consensus top prospect on this year's Tennessee
club, he's a potential first-rounder and one of the best sophomore-eligible talents
in the Draft.
More physical than most shortstops at 6-foot-3 and 212
pounds, Curley has solid to plus raw power and lets it come naturally. He
understands the strike zone and works from gap to gap with a quick, controlled
right-handed stroke. He rarely misses fastballs and does a good job of staying
back on breaking balls and changeups.
Curley possesses average speed and shows good instincts on
the bases. Though he doesn't have typical shortstop quickness, he compensates
with good positioning and a finely tuned internal clock, which allow him to get
to balls. He has good actions, reliable hands and one of the strongest infield
arms in college baseball.

2025 MLB Draft Deep Dive: Dean Curley
https://www.justbaseball.com/mlb-draft/2025-mlb-draft-deep-dive-dean-curley/
His 91.2 mph average exit velocity was 84th percentile in D1
baseball, with his 107.3 mph 90th percentile exit velocity (89th percentile),
and 110.8 mph max exit velocity (81st percentile) putting him in the upper
echelon of power hitters in this class. He’s also pulling fly balls at around a
31% clip, maximizing damage inflicted on batted ball events.
While as a prep prospect some evaluators doubted his hit
tool, there are strong foundations in place there, too. Curley’s overall 80.4%
contact rate is solid-to-good, and this improves to ~88% in zone. You won’t be
able to sneak fastballs past Curley, even at velocity, he does damage against
them.
There is still some swing and miss to his game, though.
Curley swung and missed 12% of the time in the strike zone, which is good but
not great (60th percentile). Out of the strike zone, his 63% contact rate was
just average.

10. Dean Curley – SS – Tennessee Volunteers
HT/WT: 6’3/212 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: Tennessee | Age:
21.2
A draft-eligible sophomore, Curley played a pivotal role in
the Volunteers’ lineup this spring, slashing .285/.386/.502 with 12 home runs
as the everyday shortstop. Curley is a physical specimen with a pro-ready body
that is projected to handle third base in the long term.
Offensively, Curley possesses an elite approach and utilizes
the whole field to his advantage. Curley’s pure contact is exceptional and he
stays within the zone often, rarely chasing pitches off the plate.
Fastballs are no issue for Curley (91% contact against them
in 2024) and he does plenty of damage in the air to his pull-side, as he
possesses above-average to plus power with big bat speed.
Curley has the tools to handle shortstop long-term, though
given the physical nature of his profile, he’s destined for the hot corner. He
has the arm strength to settle at the position, though accuracy can get streaky
with his arm action.
Besides that, Curley has the soft hands, lateral mobility,
and solid instincts to handle the position.

19. Dean Curley, SS,
Tennessee
Had an outstanding freshman campaign with a big College World
Series, helping his team win the National Championship. He has a bigger
shortstop profile similar to Troy Tulowitzki with pop in the bat and feel to
hit. The type of player who climbs in the draft with another productive season.

target with Brewers' glut of early picks
Dean Curley, SS, Tennessee
Playing shortstop at one of the top programs in the SEC is
sure to draw some attention and Dean Curley is going to have plenty of first
round buzz in 2025. With plus raw power and good swing decisions, Curley has a
high ceiling offensively at a premium position. Curley was dominant in the
College World Series last year.
Defensively, Curley has one of the strongest arms in the
country and is a well-above average defender at shortstop that can stick at the
position. That is sure to draw the attention of the Brewers, who covet strong
defense in their infield. Should Curley's power continue to develop, he could
be a similar player to Willy Adames.

Dean Curley, SS/3B — Tennessee
HOMETOWN: La Verne, California
HEIGHT: 6-3
WEIGHT: 212
BAT/THROW: R-R
Curley is a physical infielder with big bat speed and a
mature approach at the place. He has a workman-type attitude and doesn’t get
too high or low on the field. Curley leads by example and not with boisterous
actions. He’s the type of player who glues the clubhouse together.
He burst onto the scene as a true freshman showcasing
immediate impact in 2024 with plenty of slug and impact for the Volunteers. He
does exhibit some swing and miss against more premium stuff, but with time and
polish could turn into a power-hitting third baseman with a high on-base
percentage. That said, don’t try to sneak velocity by Curley because he
absolutely eliminates fastballs at any velocity in the strike zone.
Curley has played a good bit of shortstop in the SEC and
while his actions aren’t typical of a prototype ‘6’, he has shown the hands and
internal clock to play on the diamond at the next level. Curley has a big,
strong arm befitting of a corner infielder. He’s an average runner and is a bit
heavy-footed on the infield; a trait that generally pushes players out of the
middle of the diamond.
He will be a draft-eligible sophomore in 2025 and represents
one of the more impactful bats available in the college ranks reminiscent of
his peer Christian Moore from the 2024 Draft.

Curley earned Freshman All-America honors on Tennessee's 2024
national championship team, slashing .285/.386/.502 with 12 homers while
showing off one of the stronger infield arms in the nation. He has a patient
approach, plus raw power and the high baseball IQ to play quicker than his
average speed at shortstop.
