MACK - Friday Observation - Weekly Prospects Update

Last week, I added a bunch of players the so-called experts say are top 30 Mets prospects, regardless of how much they are pooping up the joint.

This week, I’m taking out some of the laundry.

Off this week:

2B Ji Hwan Bae/AAA-Syracuse

SP R.J. Gordon/AA-Binghamton

C Chris Suero/AA-Binghamton

OF Nick Lucky/AA-Binghamton

2B Colin Houck/A+ Brooklyn

1B Randy Guzman/A-St. Lucie

3B Roybert Herrera/FCL

Kevin Kernan      @AMBS_Kernan

How bad is the American League? Only one team is hitting above .250. The Rays are at .259. That’s it. One team.

SP Jack Wenninger/AAA-Syracuse –

Mets – 3-STARTS, 0.6-WAR, 0-1, 2.60, 0.92, 17.1-IP, 15-K, 5-BB

AAA  -  5-STARTS, 0-2, 3.60. 1.32, 25-IP, 27-K, 9-BB

The Mets have already stated that he will get at least one more pro start, but I have a funny feeling that he’s here to stay. Still, I will keep him in this report for awhile to see what develops.

As of end 7/16 – MLB – 3-ST, 0-1, 2.60, 0.92, 17.1-IP, 5-BB, 15-K

Farm To Flushing - @FarmToFlushing

Way down in the Dominican Summer League, Abner Meza pitched another gem today.

5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO

In 30 IP this season, he has a 1.71 ERA with 30 strikeouts and just five walks.

OF Nick Lucky/AA-Binghamton - On June 16th, the Mets signed a player from the Lancaster Stormers. That player went into this week batting .318 with Double-A Binghamton. That’s pretty Lucky.

7-9 – 1-4, R

7-10 – 0-4

RP Austin Brown/FCL – Brown is an UDFA out of Chipola JC who is off to an  electric start, facing eight batters and striking out seven of them.

7-9 -1.2-IP, 1-H, 0-R, 5-K - first 2.2 pro innings…. -1.07 FIP, 23.63 k/9

RP Olmedo Barria/DSLO – the 6’4” Barria went into Saturday’s game with a stat line of: 7-G, 3-0, 2.95/0.94, 21.1-IP, 23-K and added to that 4-IP, 0-R, 1-H, 0-BB, 4-K, LOWERING HIS ERA TO 2.49.

                     7-13 - Mets Prospect Group  -  @bkfan09

Olmedo Barria RHP 🇵🇦  is off to a very solid pro debut in the DSL .. Barria  one of my favorite under the radar  prospects since he signed with the Mets .. missed all of 2025 due to injury. 4-0, 2.49 era , 25.1 IP 27K/5BB 0.83 WHIP

Lots of guys, lots of mediocrity.

I like, but not love, Wenninger, Tong (stop screwing him up and let Tong be Tong), Saul, PENA, ASIGEN, VOIT, and Vladi Gomez.

I hope Reimer returns guns a-blazing.

Suero is a real oddity. His strikeouts are way too high (237 in 186 games in 2025/26), his average way too low. But he had an OBP close to .390 last year, .350+ this year, 28 HR in 2025/26, and swipes mucho bags (59 in 2025/26), with positional versatility. If you can screw with pitchers like Tong, screw with him, too. Fewer walks, and a mandate to cut the Ks by 40%. LEARN TO HIT AND NOT FAN. 49% would reduce his Ks in 2025/26 to 140 in 181 games. That rate would go up to over 1 per game in the big leagues, but could still work.

WHY? You won’t get on base like that in the big leagues, because control is better and the quality of the pitches is much tougher, but you will fan 50% + in the big leagues if you don’t change.

My weekly report gives readers a full view on the current status of the Mets minor league system

What is generally lacking this year is 10+ hit games
