Royals come back from 2-0 hole in the 9th to tie the game and send it to extras as the Mets lose in 12 innings and lose the 2015 World Series 4 Games to 1.

For the 3rd time in the series, the Mets took a lead into the late innings and ended up losing.  Curtis Granderson homered in the 1st, Lucas Duda added a Sac Fly in the 6th and Harvey was cruising.  Harvey K'd 9 in 8 shutout innings and lopied Terry Collins to complete the game.

Joel Sherman NY Post: The 9th-Inning decision that will haunt Terry Collins forever. "Collins was wavering, swayed by Harvey’s talent and intensity. That combination had delivered eight shutout innings, carried the Mets to within three outs of winning 2-0 and forcing the 111th World Series back to Kansas City. Collins said he does not let the crowd impact decisions, but clearly taking out Harvey at that point was going to unplug a great deal of the energy and momentum that was sweeping through a crowd of nearly 45,000 trying to arm-twist Collins with chants of 'Harvey, Harvey.'"

NY Post: Mets’ lead and year disappear in gut-wrenching World Series loss. "[Harvey] walked Cain to lead off the ninth and Cain stole second before Eric Hosmer smashed an RBI double to left. Jeurys Familia entered and retired Mike Moustakas, with the lead runner advancing to third. Salvador Perez then hit a grounder with the infield in and Hosmer snuck home on Wright’s throw to first base — Duda’s throw to the plate after Wright failed to look Hosmer all the way back to third beat Hosmer home but wasn’t in the same zip code — tying it 2-2."

NY Post: Why a Royals scouting report was start of the Mets’ demise. "'Make [Lucas] Duda throw the ball. Make [Travis] d’Arnaud throw the ball,' was presented to every Royals player."

NY Post: The ‘ballsy’ play that doomed hard-luck Familia again. "But his run of success ended in the World Series. In Game 1, he allowed a game-tying homer to Alex Gordon with one out in the ninth. Familia was on the mound, although not the loser, when the Royals rallied in the eighth inning Saturday in Game 4 to grab a 3-1 series lead aided by Daniel Murphy’s error. On Sunday, he suffered his second straight blown save, third of the series."

Familia threw a scoreless 10th, Jonathan Niese a scoreless 11th before the Royals broke through in the 112th, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits and a Daniel Murphy error - all charged to Addison Reed though 3 scored on a bases loaded double by Lorenzo Cain off Bartolo Colon.

Michael Conforto singled in the bottom of the 12th, his second hit of the night and just the 4th hit for the Mets the entire game but Wade Davis K'd the side and the 2015 season was over.  

ESPN.com: Royals catcher Salvador Perez named World Series MVP. "Perez hit .364/.391/.455 in the series, going 8-for-22 at the plate with two doubles while scoring three runs with two RBIs. In the Series-clinching win, Perez plated the tying run in the Royals' ninth-inning comeback, then sparked their victory in the 12th inning with a leadoff single down the right-field line before being lifted for pinch runner Jarrod Dyson."

2015 was one of the rare years that the Mets were in 1st or 2nd the entire year.  After not trading Wilmer Flores and getting Yoenis Cespedes as detailed in the SNY Documentary "Five Days in Flushing", the Mets swept a 3-game series against the Nationals and took over 1st for good.  They had an amazing series against the Dodgers with great pitching, amazing base running as they overcame a career ending injury to their SS Ruben Tejada. They swept a team in the NLCS that swept them in the post season, the Cubs.  They came to the World Series with power hitting and power pitching, but in the end the inability to field a ground ball and throw out a base runner did them in.

After the series Rico Petrocelli on the MLB Radio Network said "I hope the Mets young pitchers can stay healthy. Once again we Mets fans say..."What might have been."

The bad infield defense that plagued the team all year shows up in the World Series.  The Mets blow a 3-2 lead in the 8th as Daniel Murphy makes a key error.  Royals go on to score 3 to win 5-3.

NY Post: Conforto’s heroics, Matz’s solid start now just afterthoughts. "For a while on Saturday night, it looked like Steven Matz would be able to drive back to his childhood home on Long Island with the knowledge he pitched the Mets to the victory that evened the World Series with the help of fellow rookie Michael Conforto and his two solo homers. Instead, both were mere footnotes to a crushing 5-3 loss to the Royals in Game 4 of the World Series that left the Mets one loss away from their season ending."

ESPN.com: "The Mets had about as much success against their former teammate Young for the first couple of innings as they had in Game 1, when the 6-foot-10 Princeton grad held them hitless for the final three of the Royals' 14-inning win. Conforto changed that with the first swing of the third inning, sending a drive the first pitch deep into the second deck in right field for his third hit in 23 at-bats this postseason...Conforto pushed the lead back to two runs in the bottom half with his second long ball, a drive off Danny Duffy into the Mets' bullpen.

NY Post: Daniel Murphy’s error in 8th helps put Mets in 3-1 Series hole. "Murphy misplayed a routine grounder that led to an eighth-inning implosion for the Mets in their 5-3 loss to the Royals in Game 4 of the World Series at Citi Field. In a nightmare sequence for the Mets, reliever Tyler Clippard walked Ben Zobrist and Lorenzo Cain before Jeurys Familia entered for a five-out save. Eric Hosmer hit a slow grounder that rolled under Murphy’s glove, allowing the tying run to score. Before the inning was complete, two additional runs scored on two hits and the Mets were on their way to falling into a 3-1 hole in the series."

Newsday: "For all of Murphy's mighty clouts this postseason -- home runs in a postseason-record six games in a row -- the sight of the ball going under his glove and into rightfield might end up being one of the defining moments of this World Series if the Mets don't make a historic rally. 'It's frustrating because this ballclub -- we put ourselves in position to win a ballgame today and I misplayed it,' Murphy said. 'There's no excuse for it. We lost the ballgame because of it.'"

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Cespedes showing Mets fans his worst at the worst possible time. "In this heartbreaker for Mets fans, the multi-tool player Cespedes faltered at bat, in the field and, in the piece de resistance, on the bases. Right when the Mets threatened to put together a miraculous, ninth-inning rally against Kansas City’s indomitable closer Wade Davis, after blowing a one-run lead in the eighth, Cespedes somehow got doubled off first base on a harmless Lucas Duda line drive to Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, ending the game."

NY Post: Mets slam back into World Series with Game 3 domination. "Syndergaard buzzed Alcides Escobar with heat to the backstop leading off the game, maybe the wake-up call the Mets needed in rolling to a 9-3 victory in Game 3 of the World Series at Citi Field. On a night everything went in the Mets’ favor, David Wright homered and drove in four runs and the bullpen was perfect, following a solid performance from Syndergaard, who rebounded from early trouble."

After the Royals took a 1-0 lead in the 1st, the Captain, David Wright, took the lead right back with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 1st.  After the Royals took the lead back in the 2nd with two runs, Curtis Granderson slammed a 2-run shot pitting the Mets back up for good.  

Mets broke it open with 4 runs in the 6th.  Juan Uribe a pinch hit RBI single and David Wright a bases loaded single to drive in two more as the Mets sent 9 men to the plate.  

Joel Sherman NY Post: Noah Syndergaard’s 98-mph bullet flipped World Series on its head. "But suddenly there is a rest of a series to care about beyond hostilities. That is because the Mets are back in the Fall Classic and that is pretty much on Syndergaard, too. For he went from reeling to dealing in Game 3. Nearly knocked out in the second inning to delivering the key pitch in the sixth. His tenacity and survival skills have changed everything in a World Series that is now tighter and tenser."

Lucas Duda went 2 for 3 with an RBI but the rest of the team went hitless as the Mets fell to 0 and 2 in the 2015 World Series.

Mets took a 1-0 lead in the 4th as Duda's 2nd hit of the night plated Daniel Murphy after two Met walks.  

Jacob deGrom sailed through the first 3 innings allowing just one walk.  Royals loaded the bases in the bottom of the 4th on a walk, a Duda error and their first hot of the night but deGrom got Salvador Perez to groundout to keep the Mets up 1-0.

That all changed in the 5th and the Royals sent 9 to the plate scoring 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk.  Royals starter Johnny Cueto did not allow a hit the rest of the way as he went the distance.  The Royals tacked on 3 runs against the Mets Pen in the 8th en route to a 7-1 win.

Mike Puma NY Post: Mets go meekly, fall into 0-2 World Series hole. "Jacob deGrom became the latest Mets starter who appeared gassed Wednesday, and the lineup might as well have spent the day gorging at a local barbecue pit. Two games of the World Series are complete and the Mets need a jump-start."

Ken Davidoff NY Post: What happened to the fearsome Mets offense? "Remember Murphy? He was the toast of the town about three days ago, having homered in six straight postseason games to set a baseball record. Yet the Royals have pitched the second baseman carefully in this Fall Classic, and none of Murphy’s teammates have picked up the baton to keep this offense going."

NY Post: ‘Flawless’ Royals are exposing Mets’ butterfingers weakness. "It started with Yoenis Cespedes misplaying Alcides Escobar’s fly ball to left-center into an inside the park homer with the first pitch the Mets threw in the World Series...a Lucas Duda miscue on Ben Zobrist’s grounder to his right to star the bottom of the fourth...There was the Eric Hosmer liner to center that a charging Juan Lagares couldn’t come up with...And a ball that popped out of Wilmer Flores’ glove at short that was ruled a hit."

Jeurys Familia allowed a game tying, 9th inning, homer to Alex Gordon and David Wright's error put the leadoff batter on in the 14th that later scored on a Sac Fly as the Mets dropped Game 1 of the 2015 World Series.

Some say it wasn't the Mets night right from the first pitch:

NY Post: "Escobar became the first player to hit an inside-the-park homer in the World Series since the Athletics’ Mule Haas in 1929 when he circled the bases on Harvey’s first pitch of the night. Escobar hit a fly to left-center that hit Cespedes’ right leg in stride and rolled toward the outfield fence. Escobar, the MVP of the ALCS, never hesitated and scored standing up."

Mets scored single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th to go up 3-1, but the Royals tied it back up in the bottom of the 6th.  In the 8th, Juan Lagares singled, stole 2nd and scored on an Eric Hosmer error to make it 4-3 and the Mets took that lead to the 9th.

NY Post: "Alex Gordon’s ninth-inning blast to center with one out in the bottom of the ninth tied Game 1 with the Mets just two outs away from victory in what turned out to be a 5-4, 14-inning loss to the Royals in Game 1 of the World Series. 'It’s part of the game,' Familia said. 'My fastball was in the zone. I missed my spot. I wanted it away and down.'"

Mets sweep the Cubs 4-0 in the 2015 NLCS.  Lucas Duda with a 3-run 1st inning homer and Travis d'Arnaud a solo shot put the Mets up 4-0, Duda drives in 2 more with a double in the 2nd for a 6-0 lead.  

NY Post: The Mets are Going to the World Series: "Lucas Duda, who had been almost nonexistent for the Mets in their previous eight postseason games, was the hero with a five-RBI performance that allowed rookie Steven Matz and the bullpen to coast in the most lopsided game of the series...Daniel Murphy established an all-time postseason record by hitting a home run in a sixth consecutive game. He finished with four in the NLCS and was named series MVP after batting .529. In nine games this postseason, Murphy has seven homers and 11 RBIs." 

Ken Davidoff NY Post: Daniel Murphy: Bumbling second baseman to playoff legend. "The second baseman’s eighth-inning, two-run homer off Fernando Rodney provided the fitting cap to both a virtually flawless NLCS for the Mets and Murphy’s own, obvious case for series MVP honors, which he predictably captured. The Mets’ 8-3 thumping of the Cubs in Game 4 on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field completed their series sweep and clinched their first trip to the World Series since 2000, when they lost to the Yankees."

NY Post: Versatile Bartolo Colon comes to the rescue again for Mets. "In the fifth inning with two on and two out, Terry Collins called on the 42-year-old to bail out the rookie, Steven Matz. Colon quickly got Kris Bryant to strike out to finish the inning and then pitched a scoreless sixth to allow Collins to get to the other members of his rested bullpen, Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard and the practically unhittable Jeurys Familia."

Mets take a 3-0 lead in the 2015 NLCS behind Daniel Murphy's Home Run in 5th straight playoff game and Jacob deGrom's 7 inning 4 hit, 2 run performance.  Yoenis Cespedes goes 3 for 5 driving in 2 runs.  

Cespedes doubled in David Wright to give the Mets a 1-0 1st inning lead.  Kyle Schwarber homered in the bottom of the inning to tie it up.  Daniel Murphy's Homer in the 3rd made it 2-1 Mets but the Cubs tied it again in the 4th on Jorge Solar's homer.

NY Post: "The Mets took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on Trevor Cahill’s wild pitch...Conforto had been struck out to end the inning, except that Cahill’s breaking ball hit the dirt and eluded catcher Miguel Montero, allowing the batter to reach first and Cespedes to score from third with the go-ahead run. Cespedes had stolen third after Duda’s surprising sacrifice bunt moved him to second."

Mets go up 2-0 in the 2015 NLCS as they jump out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st on a David Wright RBI double and Daniel Murphy 2-run homer.  Mets add another run in the 3rd on Yoenis Cespedes RBI single.  Noah Syndergaard throws 5 shoutout inning before running into trouble in the 5th.  After Kris Bryant double drives in the Cubs first run of the night, Jon Niese is called upon to face Anthony Rizzo.  Niese strikes him out ending the Cubs only threat of the game as the Mets pen hold them to just two singles the rest of the way.

NY Post: "“My job was to stop the momentum and fortunately, I was able to do that,” said Niese, who recorded perhaps the biggest out in the Mets’ 4-1 Game 2 victory Sunday that led to a commanding 2-0 lead in the series that now shifts to Chicago."

NY Post: Daniel Murphy homers again to lead Mets to 2-0 NLCS lead. "Murphy’s franchise-record-tying fifth postseason homer — a two-run blast in the first inning against Cubs ace Jake Arrieta — set the tone on a night Noah Syndergaard had electric stuff and guided the Mets to a second straight victory to begin this series...Overall, Murphy is 10-for-28 (.357) with five homers and eight RBIs in the postseason."

NY Post: "And with a three-run lead, the Mets rarely see a more soothing sight than Familia heading to the mound in the ninth. There was a botched play at first for a single, but Familia did what he usually does, what he did 43 times in the regular season and now four times in the postseason. He got a save."  

Baseball Reference:  2015: In Game 2 of the NLCS, the Mets get to Jake Arrieta with three 1st-inning runs, one on a double by David Wright, and two on a homer by Daniel Murphy, to win, 4 - 1, over the Cubs. Rookie Noah Syndergaard is the winner.

Despite going 0 and 7 against the Cubs in the regular season, the 2015 Playoff Mets were a different team than the team the Cubs swept in May and July.  The Mets took Game 1 on homers and great starting pitching from Matt Harvey.

NY Post: Matt Harvey, Daniel Murphy propel Mets to NLCS-opening win.  "Daniel Murphy and Travis d’Arnaud each homered to lead the attack against Jon Lester, and Curtis Granderson drove in two runs for the Mets, who won a second straight opener in this postseason. Harvey focused on his secondary pitches and lasted 7 ²/₃ innings in which he allowed two earned runs on four hits with two walks on nine strikeouts before Familia took it to the finish."  

Ken Davidoff NY Post: This Matt Harvey signature moment is one to remember. "Despite a first-pitch temperature of 48 degrees, and coming off an NL Division Series Game 3 start in which he excelled more with grit than with stuff, Harvey dominated the dangerous Cubs, retiring the first 12 batters he faced and lasting a total of 7 ²/₃ innings, allowing two runs and four hits while walking two and striking out nine. Of his 97 pitches, an impressive 64 went for strikes."

Mets win a tight and gritty NLDS Game 5 to win the series and head to the 2015 NLCS.  Daniel Murphy's 6th inning homer was the deciding run in the Mets 3-2 win as Murph was involved in all 3 run.  Before the homer he doubled in the Mets 1st run in the 1st and stole 3rd in an amazin' heads up play...

Kevin Davidoff NY Post: "Mets fans will remember Murphy’s fourth-inning single just as fondly, if not more so. That’s because, when Lucas Duda walked one out later, Murphy pounced: With the Dodgers, up 2-1, playing the lefty-swinging Duda on a shift to pull to the right side, Murphy calmly trotted to second, at which point he turned on the jets and sprinted to third. The Dodgers, caught sleeping, had no one covering the bag and therefore no play. Murphy tagged from third and scored the tying run on Travis d’Arnaud’s fly to right field."

NY Post: "DeGrom somehow survived six innings, after a turbulent stretch to begin the game, allowing two earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Noah Syndergaard made his first career relief appearance in the seventh and walked Adrian Gonzalez on a 100-mph heater with two outs before striking out the seemingly unstoppable Justin Turner on a filthy curve."

Mike Vaccaro: It's no mirage: Collins clears every hurdle with a magic touch. "Finally came Familia’s delivery, and Kendrick wouldn’t have been close if he’d been using Bamm-Bamm Rubble’s bat, and the Mets had their 3-2 win in this game and in this series, and the dugout was clearing and the bullpen was clearing and they met just west of the pitcher’s mound in a 25-man embrace, hearing the greatest sound you can hear when you’re 3,000 miles away from home: Silence. Blissful, beautiful, bountiful silence."
