Mets Prospect - P - Daniel McDonald

Daniel McDonald P R R 5-11 195 4-17-86 Seton Hall University

McDonald was originally drafted in the 45th round of the 2004 draft by the New York Mets, but he decided to attend Seton Hall University instead. He was drafted in the 8th round of the 2007 draft again by the New York Mets. He signed, and was assigned to Brooklyn.

His senor year stats at ‘the Hall’ were 2-2. 3.37 in 26 relief appearances. He also struck out 39 in 34.2 IP.

A scouting report on McDonald: McDonald entered the spring as a player that many scouts in the Mid-Atlantic had pegged as a potential riser. He'd shown above-average velocity in high school as well as last summer in the Cape Cod League, when he posted a 1.04 ERA and struck out 18 in 17 relief innings. He also has athleticism, another reason scouts were optimistic about him. While McDonald's velocity was climbing back toward 92 mph as the Pirates' season was winding down, but has pitched more in the 88-90 mph range. He'll flash an average slider at times, though he tends to get around it. McDonald has good feel for pitching and solid-average command, but with limited room for additional growth and mediocre success this spring, he probably won't be drafted until the fourth- to seventh-round range.

McDonald throws a fastball (92-94), a slider, and a cutter.

In 2007, McDonald played for Brooklyn (1-2, 3.16, 1.17, in 20 relief appearances, 3 saves). He also had 30 Ks in 25.2 IP.

In 2008, he spent the entire season on the DL.

Herd Game Notes

TODAY’S GAME:

Today, the Buffalo Bisons host the Syracuse Chiefs in the third game of a four-game series from Coca-Cola Field (1:05 p.m.). The Herd needs a win this afternoon and tomorrow to earn a split of the four-game series. Syracuse has won the first two games, 4-0 and 6-5. After this series, the Bisons will head to Rochester for a two-game set against the Red Wings.

CRAZY EIGHTS:

INF Michel Abreu and OF Fernando Martinez both drove in runs in yesterday’s loss. For each, the RBI was their eighth of the season as the sluggers remained tied atop the team’s charts. So far this season, Abreu has hit .417 (5-12) with runners in scoring position. Both of his homeruns this season have come with runners in scoring position as well.

SOLID RELIEF:

LHP Ken Takahashi pitched another scoreless inning of relief yesterday. The southpaw has not allowed a run since Opening Day and is working on 10 consecutive innings of scoreless relief (over five games). If Takahashi had one more third of an inning pitched, his 0.77ERA would qualify as the 3rd lowest mark in the International League.

F-MART: OF Fernando Martinez still tops all International League hitters with his eight doubles on the season. He is now 3rd in the IL in extra-base hits with 10. Martinez has hit in nine of his last 11 games with the Bisons, averaging .298 (14-47).

SPEED LIMIT:

The Bisons’ catchers lead the International League in both times caught stealing (9) and percentage (45%). The Herd has allowed just 11 stolen bases in 20 attempts by its opponents.

IN LIKE A LAMB: The Mets signed INF Mike Lamb to a minor league contract yesterday. Lamb has hit .277 with 69 homeruns and 345RBI over nine major league seasons. He will report to extended spring training in Port St. Lucie, FL before being assigned to the Bisons.

OH NELLY: The New York Mets have also re-signed RHP Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal. Figueroa posted a 3.00ERA in two starts for the Bisons this year before being promoted by the Mets on April 18. Figueroa was 0-1 with a 4.50ERA in one start with New York (6.0IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K).

Minor Stuff - April 26, 2009

Extended Camp:

Don’t look for the Mets to start bumping players up in April or early May, even though some managers wished they could change a few names on their lineup cards. It simply is too early, especially for the SPs who are all still on a limited pitch count, and in some cases, still piggybacking.

SP wise, Buffalo looks back in control (Nelson Figueroa, Freddy Garcia, Dillon Gee, Jonathan Niese, and Brandon Knight). The addition of Wily Mo Pena and Mike Lamb should help, but this is a bad team to pitch for.

The B-Met rotation (Jose Sanchez, Mike Antonini, Dylan Owen, Ryan Coultas, and Eric Brown) are also set; however, Brown is still on the ropes and this could represent the slot when the first promotion from Lucy comes through.

Lucy wise, still too many starters and no decisions. There’s six in rotation right now (Brad Holt, Jenry Mejia, Scott Shaw, Edgar Ramirez, Angel Calero, and Eric Niesen), and that still leaves Brant Rustich, who was supposed to be a starter. My guess, Calero will be the first one sent to New York State.

Regarding Savannah, it gets even more crowded. At last, there are 8 starters, and only two are stumbling. I wouldn’t be surprised to see either Kyle Allen or Robert Carson sent to Brooklyn for more maturing.

Other positions to keep your eyes on (but again, don’t expect anything before May 15th) are:

RP – I really hope the Mets don’t do the same fast tracking to Roy Merritt that they did with Eddie Kunz last year. Leave him in Binghamton.

2B – The B-Mets are in desperate need of bats, especially at this position, and I expect Greg Veloz to be there by the ASG… that will give the opportunity for either Jordany Valdespin or Josh Satin to move up from Savannah.

The Herd:

Both OF Wily Mo Pena and 3B Mike Lamb should be reporting in today… that means two must go… I’ll update the blog as soon as the names come over the wire…

I’m no giving up on him by no means, and I’m not dropping him out of the top 5 Mets prospects, but it is time to start worrying a little about SP Jonathan Niese. He got removed in the fourth on Saturday, another in a series of bad outings.

Niese is also experiencing what it’s like to play for the worst team in a league. Not much support here, but that doesn’t stop Johan from putting up the numbers.

Gotta hand it to the Buffalo Bisons. They found a new way to lose Saturday in Coca-Cola Field. Pretty tough to do since most of their games have followed the same pattern.

But for once, the moribund offense showed some life as Buffalo burst to a 5-0 lead through two innings. Even that wasn’t enough for this group.

The Syracuse Chiefs roared back to take the lead and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to nip the reeling Herd, 6-5. Buffalo fell to 2-13 overall and 1-9 at home.
An exasperated manager Ken Oberkfell asked his own question of the media when he emerged from his office for his postgame chat.

“You guys gettin’ tired of this?” Oberkfell asked. “ ’Cuz I am. I was pleased with the fact we came out swinging the bats beginning the game. First couple of innings we were on the ball swinging at fastballs. After that, it just seemed like we shut down.

“We picked it up again in the ninth, which is a good thing to see but it’s the same broken record. We’re not getting that hit with men in scoring position.”

Lucy:

Have you noticed that the bats are starting to dry up in Lucy?

As of the close of Saturday night’s game: Greg Veloz: .286… Reese Havens: .288… Ike Davis: .271… Carlos Guzman: .315… Kirk Biewenhuis: .222… Jeffrey Lutz: .269…

Gnats:

The RiverDogs (9-7) scored seven unanswered runs to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats, 7-5, on Saturday night in front of 5,709 at The Joe. Savannah led 5-0 at one point before Charleston mounted their comeback. The deciding blow came in the eighth with Savannah (10-6) clinging to a one-run lead. Brian Baisley, who cleared the bases with a double in the fifth off starter Kyle Allen, singled off Eric Beaulac (1-1) to start the frame for the RiverDogs. Beaulac (1-1), trying to keep the pinch runner Dan Brewer close at first, threw the ball away on the pickoff attempt and Brewer advanced to third. He battled to strike out Abraham Almonte but then surrendered a two-run home run to Taylor Grote that pushed Charleston ahead for good. They added an insurance run later in the inning. Pat Venditte, the switch pitcher, picked up his fifth save in the ninth and recorded three strikeouts. It was all Savannah early on as they scored the first five runs of the game. Sean Ratliff led off the third inning with a double but would score on the same play as the throw into the infield from Ray Kruml was off line. At the time, Savannah was up 4-0. Rafael Fernandez finished 3-for-4 with a stolen base while Josh Satin and Juan Lagares each added a pair of hits. Allen worked 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Draft:

It is becoming like a broken record, but Stephen Strasburg improved his record to 9-0 in leading the 19th ranked Aztecs to an opening 4-3 win over number 16 ranked TCU. Strasburg lasted 7 innings, walking one and striking out 14. He only gave up four hits. TCU scored all three runs in the seventh on a 3-run homer by Bryan Holaday to close a 4-0 gap to 4-3. Brandon Decker drove in three runs to lead the offense, contributing a 2-run single in the second and then an RBI single in the sixth. Addison Reed came in with two outs in the eighth with the bases loaded and struck out Jimmie Pharr looking to end the inning. He retired the side in order in the ninth, two via the strikeout to pick up his 14th save. Addison leads the country in saves and his 0.52 ERA will have scouts paying attention to not only Strasburg.

New Hampshire 7, B-Mets 2

The B-Mets dug themselves an early 5-0 hole and could not hit their way out of it Saturday afternoon, losing 7-2 to New Hampshire at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium. The loss gives the Fisher Cats a 2-1 lead in the four-game series.

RHP Eric Brown made his first start of the season in place of Fernando Nieve, who is on the Temporarily Inactive List. Brown was roughed up for five runs over four innings of work.

New Hampshire’s (11-5) big inning was the four-run fourth as the Fisher Cat’s pounded out five hits capped off by an RBI triple by Sean Shoffit. Luis Sanchez and Adam Calderone also contributed RBI singles.

Binghamton (8-6) plated it’s two runs in the sixth inning. After Ruben Tejada doubled down the left field line, Emmanuel Garcia dropped a single inside the left field foul line to score Tejada from second. Garcia’s hit knocked New Hampshire starter Fabio Castro out of the game after five-plus innings. The B-Mets added a second run in the inning as Garcia scored on a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Lucas Duda.

Castro was the winning pitcher for the second time this year, lasting five innings giving up two runs with seven strikeouts. Brown took the loss falling to 1-1.

Syracus 6, Buffalo 5

The Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, jumped out to an early lead Saturday, but could not hang on, losing 6-5 to the Syracuse Chiefs.

Buffalo's offense began the game on fire, with six of the first eight batters to reach on a hit. Jesus Feliciano began that string with a single to the left side. Feliciano would move to third when Andy Green doubled off the left field wall. Fernando Martinez drove the outfielder in when he grounded out. Green would touch home when Michel Abreu rocketed at single to left before being thrown out at second. That made the score 2-0 Buffalo after the first.

The runs continued to flow in the second inning. Catcher Robinson Cancel led off with a single. Jonathon Malo then knocked one of his two hits down the left field line for a double. That scored Cancel for a 3-0 lead. Argenis Reyes made it three straight hits when he singled to drive in Malo. Reyes advanced to second on the throw home.

Still with nobody out in the second inning and a 4-0 lead, pitcher Jonathon Niese executed a sacrifice bunt to move Reyes over to third base. The second baseman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Feliciano to grow the lead to 5-0.

But the Bisons couldn't hold the advantage, surrendering four runs in the fourth inning, and the deciding two runs in the sixth.

NY Sports Dog and Mack's Mets to Guest Blog

I'm happy to announce that Dave Singer, from NY Sports Dog, will be a guest contributor, from time to time, here at Mack's Mets.

In turn, I will post occassionally on his site, starting with the April 1st revised Mack's Mets Prospect List.

Dave joins Jack Flynn and I on what experts have said is consistently one of the top one billion Mets site on the internet.

B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

In their second extra-inning game of the season,
the B-Mets came out on top, 4-2, in 13 innings. Five different
pitchers combined to shut down the New Hampshire bats in
the proceeding seven innings after starter Ryan Coultas left
after giving up a leadoff single in the seventh. Nick Abel got
the win out of the pen with a scoreless 12th and closer Roy
Merritt notched his seventh save in as many chances with a
scoreless 13th frame. Binghamton rallied for two runs in the
top of the 13th when Carl Loadenthal and Josh Thole led off
the inning with singles off Edgar Estanga. It was then that
Zach Dials entered for the Fisher Cats. Dials faced a pinchhitter
Josh Petersen who reached on throwing error by shortstop
Luis Sanchez, which allowed Loadenthal to score the goahead
run. Lucas Duda brought the fourth run in, walking in a
run with the bases loaded in a pinch-hit role.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Eric Brown will make his
first start of the season this afternoon for the B-Mets. Brown
has made four relief appearances this season, including an
outing of 4.2 innings 4/18 vs. Portland. He carries a 1-0 record
and a 3.12 ERA into today’s game. He was to open the
season in a piggybacking role with fellow RHP Fernando
Nieve, but weather prevented that from happeneing on multiple
occasions. Last season, Brown saw in action in 30 games
for Binghamton, with 17 starts tallying a 5.46 ERA as a
starter. He was the Mets’ 18th round selection in 2005 out of
Wingate University.

LHP Fabio Castro gets the call for the Fisher Cats today in his
fourth start of the year. Castro has been tremendous in 2009,
holding opponents scoreless in three starts thus far spanning
16.2 innings. He has given up just 11 hits and has worked at
least five innings in each of his starts, striking out 17. Castro
spent 2008 in Philadelphia’s organization between Reading
(AA) and Lehigh Valley (AAA). He made 16 starts for Reading
last year with a 7-2 record and 4.13 ERA including a complete
-game loss in his last start 8/3/08 at Erie. He was signed as
an international free agent as a 16-year old by the White Sox
out of the Dominican 12/26/01.

DEFENSIVE STREAK ENDS:

Mark Kiger’s third inning error
ended a streak of 39 consecutive innings without error for the
Binghamton defense, their longest errorless streak.

RELENTLESS RELIEF:

In Binghamton’s last three games, the
bullpen has been stingy, stringing 13.2 innings of scoreless
baseball together to contribute in two wins. Through 13
games this season, the pen has allowed just 11 earned runs
in 59.2 innings, equating to a 1.66 ERA.
