2013 Draft-Notes - Gandy Stubblefield, Dominic Smith, Aaron Judge, Dalton Dulin,Justis Boever

RHP Gandy Stubblefield, Texas A&M -- Stubblefield has a big-time arm, but struggled with his command in the spring for the Aggies. This summer, he was very consistent and put up some solid numbers. He made eight appearances and had a 3.46 ERA in 39 innings. He also struck out 53 and walked 16, while teams hit him at a .213 clip. PG
Dominic Smith LHP/1B Serra HS, California- Big bodied power bat who drew a Ryan Howard comp from a scout friend of mine. Very relaxed at the plate with the ability to recognize his pitch and crush it. Upside also as a LHP with low to potentially mid 90′s heat. Pinetar

Aaron Judge IF  Lakewood (Calif.) High  Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 180. B/T: L/R.  Crawford is a talented young player who makes the game look easy. The starting shortstop at Lakewood since his freshman year, he is a quick-twitch athlete with smooth actions. At the plate he is a gap-to-gap hitter with a fluid swing from the left side. He has excellent range and plenty of arm strength. He is verbally committed to Southern California

Dalton Dulin  IF  Memphis  Ht.: 5-9. Wt.: 165. B/T: B/R.  Dulin is a high-energy player that constantly puts pressure on the other team with his speed. His short, quick swing sprays line drives to all fields and his speed on the bases impacts the game every time out. In addition, his instincts are among the best in the country. He is verbally committed to Mississippi.

Justis Boever is a wiry 6-foot-4, 180-pound right handed pitcher who comes from a high ¾ arm slot with a long, loose arm and good rhythm on the mound. Boever’s fastball sat an easy 84-86 mph with late cut and was consistently thrown for a strike. He also showcased a sharp, late breaking 11-to-5 breaking ball  (67-73) with fastball arm speed and a 68-71 mph change up down in the zone with arm side movement. Boever has plenty of room to fill out his frame, and as he continues to mature physically should see a spike in velocity. PBR

2013 Draft-Notes - Hunter Green, Chris Kohler, Braden Shipley, Brendan Hendriks, Rhett Wiseman

Hunter Green LHP Warren East HS, Bowling Green, Ky. Ht.: 6-4. Wt.: 160. B/T: L/L.  Green is a long, lean lefty with outstanding arm speed. He throws his fastball in the 88-92 mph range and complements it with a big curveball that has depth as well as a deceptive changeup. He has good feel for his off-speed stuff and has the look of a young pitcher who will continue to add velocity as he matures.
Chris Kohler  LHP  Los Osos HS, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Ht.: 6-3. Wt.: 195. B/T: L/L. Kohler is a long, loose lefthander with a great feel for his stuff. He comfortably throws his fastball in the upper 80s and can slide into the low 90s on occasion. His curveball works as his out pitch and he also uses his changeup off of his fastball. He throws all of his offerings for strikes in any count.

Braden Shipley, rhp, Anchorage (Jr., Nevada): A former second-team all-Western Athletic Conference shortstop who pitched just 10 innings as a freshman, Shipley emerged as the Wolf Pack's Friday starter and won WAC pitcher of the year this spring, ranking first in ERA (2.20), second in innings (98), and third in strikeouts (80). Deployed as a closer to limit his innings, Shipley dominated in 13 summer innings, striking out 22 and walking two. Shipley has a lean, angular and athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame that offers some projection. He throws from a high three-quarters slot and gets good downhill plane. Scouts love his mid-90s fastball that touches 97 mph.
INF Brendan Hendriks, San Francisco -- After putting together a respectable spring with a .311 batting average, Hendriks continued his impressive ways this spring for the Dons. He batted .400 with 17 doubles, two triples, six homers and 40 RBIs. He also had a 26:17 SO:BB ratio. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=7564
Rhett Wiseman, of, Brockton (Fr., Vanderbilt): Ranked No. 136 in the BA 500 heading into the 2012 draft, Wiseman slipped to the 25th round by the Cubs due to signability, and he elected to stick with his commitment to Vanderbilt. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Massachusetts native impressed league coaches with his athleticism and ability to cover both gaps. Although there are some holes in Wiseman's lefthanded swing, evidenced by a .224/.313/.344 line this summer, league managers observed that the ball exploded off his bat, and most were convinced that he would hit for average and power as he developed and gained more experience. The 18-year-old also swiped 13 bases and was praised for an advanced approach at the plate and outstanding work ethic.

2013 Draft-Notes - Dustin Driver, Colin Moran , Nick Palewicz, Tyler Brunnemann

Dustin Driver RHP  Wenatchee (Wash.) HS  Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 210. B/T: R/R. Driver is one of the true power arm prospects in the 2013 class. His fastball sits in the low 90s for the entire game with more still in the tank. His delivery is deceptive and gets on hitters quickly. He also throws a changeup and developing breaking ball. He is verbally committed to UCLA.
Colin Moran 3B North Carolina- The best hitter in college who comes from strong big league bloodlines as the nephew of former UNC star B.J Surhoff. A fiery player who is ultra competitive. Coach Mike Fox told the newsobserver (NC) “we said from the very beginning. It’s the best trait and then it is his worst trait….there’s an edge there and I think all really competitive athletes have. There’s that edge, and when they’re right to that edge, it makes them really, really good. But when you cross over the edge, you know, sometimes bad things happen.” This bad thing was a tantrum he pulled after a 3-1 loss to NC State where he punched a door and broke his hand costing him 21 games. (His team went 13-8 without him) He should stick at 3B and provide the potential #3 bat in the order with the ability to get on base a lot. http://pinetarpress.com/top-11-2013-draft-august-15th-2012/
RHP Nick Palewicz, Washington -- Palewicz had just an OK spring for the Huskies, but showed some serious strides this summer. He made nine appearances and had a 2.92 ERA in 37 innings of work. He also struck out 36 and walked six, while teams hit him at a .248 clip. PG

2013 Draft-Notes - Clint Frazier, Ian Clarkin, Lucas Giolito, Clint Frazier, Joe Donino

Clint Frazier  OF  Loganville (Ga.) HS  Ht.: 6-0. Wt.: 190. B/T: R/R. Frazier possesses that rare power and speed combination. He is a plus runner with plus arm strength and the competitive nature scouts like to see. He has good raw power and can profile anywhere in the batting order as well as at all three outfield positions. He is verbally committed to Georgia.

Nationals first-round pick Lucas Giolito will undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, a diagnosis confirmed Wednesday when he received a second opinion from physician Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. Yocum, the same doctor who operated on both Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann, will perform the surgery Aug. 31.  The Nationals drafted Giolito with the 16th overall pick and signed him at the deadline to a $2.925 million signing bonus. The Nationals chose Giolito, 18, with the expectation that he may need Tommy John surgery. He spent his senior high school season in Southern California rehabbing from a strained elbow ligament. wash post

RHP Joe Donino, Columbia -- Donino put together a very solid summer at the Cal Ripken League. He made eight appearances (seven starts) and had a 4.15 ERA in 47 2/3 innings of work. He also struck out 50 and walked 34. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=7564

2013 Draft-Notes - Austin Meadows, Jonathan Denney, Clint Frazier, Chris Okey, Sean Manaea

Austin Meadows OF Grayson HS Georgia- 5 tool talent who plays in a baseball rich environment. 6’3 athletic OF who swings LH. Great baseball body who projects as a mid order bat with speed. pinetar

Jonathan Denney  C/IF  Yukon (Okla.) HS  Ht.: 6-2. Wt.: 205. B/T: R/R.  Denney is a physical young catcher with outstanding defensive skills. He receives well and has a quick and efficient release on his throws. At the plate, he has serious raw power in a righthanded stroke with lift that should lead to solid power.

Loganville High School senior Clint Frazier knows how much respect he will draw from the opposition when the 2013 prep baseball season rolls around. Frazier, a power-hitter who helped lead the Red Devils to the Class AAAA state title last spring, is rated the No. 1 prospect in the nation by virtually every publication. walton tribune

Eustis senior catcher Chris Okey was named Tuesday as one of 20 players on the USA Baseball 18-and-under national team. It is the second year in a row he has made the 18-and-under national team after playing one year on the 16-and-under national team.

The list of past Outstanding Pro Prospect award winners for the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, the top college summer wood bat league, is distinguished.  Robin Ventura, Mark Teixeira, Chuck Knoblauch, and Matt Wieters lead the way for the hitters, while Billy Wagner, Aaron Crow, Kip Wells, and Andrew Miller headline the pitchers (full list here, as well as analysis from the very amusing Carson Cistulli).  Out of the 19 hitters and 19 pitchers given the OPP, 27–14 hitters and 13 pitchers–reached the major leagues, a high percentage indeed.  This year, the winner of the Cape Cod League OPP was a rangy left-hander named Sean Manaea. SOS

Lucas Giolito will undergo Tommy John surgery next week

Prep Baseball Report‏ - Mitchell Machi (2014) very impressive sitting at 84-85 topping out at 86 mph.

2013 Draft – Q and A – LHSP – Kevin Ziomek – Vanderbilt

Mack – I’ll thrilled to be talking today with one of the top lefties in the upcoming draft, Vanderbilt’s Kevin Ziomek. Hey Kevin. It seems like we just went through this process a few years ago, doesn’t it? J

Kevin: - Ha, ha, it sure does. Time has really flown by. It's been a great few years so far at Vandy, I'm really excited to see what next spring will be like for us!

Mack – As usual, my first question takes you back to that first day someone put either a ball or bat in your hand. Take us through the steps that led to this day.

Kevin - I have to say I can't tell you too much about my first time with a ball ha! My parents always told me that they always put a baseball in my left hand when I was younger. I will always be thankful to my dad for that!

Mack – I loved the scouting report from PG when you were in high school:

Kevin Ziomek is a 2010 LHP with a 6'2'', 180 lb. frame from Amherst, MA who attends Amherst Regional HS. Lean athletic build, projects well, long arms. Full delivery with full arm circle, fast loose arm, flexible actions. Challenges with 88-91 mph fastball, throws FB to spots. Throws both CB and SL, SL much better pitch at present, power bite at 77 mph, CB has softer spin and rolling break. Shows command. Didn't throw change. Projects very well, especially with further development of breaking stuff. Could explode by next June. Has early draft potential. Good student

Was the competition at Amherst Regional challenging enough?

Kevin - I think whoever wrote that scouting report was being pretty generous! As a kid coming out of the Northeast, I think my experience was a lot different than the kids who play in the south or out in California. We have some good talent up there, but a lot of that talent is spread out and it can sometimes be hard to find the right tournaments and areas with a lot of strong competition. It was definitely a great experience for me to go down to Jupiter and some of the other big tournaments so I could see what competition would be like at the next level. There was definitely some good competition, I probably just didn't experience it on the regular basis that a kid from California might.

Mack – So, summer “travel teams” were very important in your overall assessment?

Kevin - I wasn't necessarily a huge traveler to be honest. I went to some of the bigger tournaments such as PG national and Jupiter, FL but I never really attended much else. In the summer I just played for a local legion team and high school ball during the spring. Other than that the only major tournament I attended was the Area Code Games out in California. I guess I just was fortunate enough to be invited to the right tournaments and had the right coaches see me!

Mack – Last question, Kevin (and thank you for your time). What are your realistic goals this year and how far can we expect Vandy to go?

Kevin - I'm really excited for this year. I think we have a great group of young guys coming in, and there is a good chance they can have an immediate impact. Hopefully we can make another run back to Omaha and bring back a championship to Nashville!

Mack – Thanks Kevin. We’ll check back with you mid-season.

'The Draft Room' - Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0

An anonymous poster asked me to put together my first mock. Don’t confuse this with the compilation mocks I do each month. They average all the mocks online and tell you where each player is falling in line that way.
This is me saying picking who I think are the top players, in the order I think they come out as “the best player available”.
We play no favorites here, though it’s tempting when it comes to the Mets.
I’m using the win-loss records at end of day 8-22 as the draft order

Lastly, we have an interview with Kevin Ziomek coming up at noon and quickie scouting reports on five prospects every two hours (don't forget to come back to the Mock Draft and participate in the comment section all day.
With that said, here goes.

1.    Houston Astros – OF – Austin Meadows – Grayson H.S. (GA.) – It is impossible to consider anyone other than Chipper, err… 6-3, 200-pound Austin as the first pick overall.  Last year, he went .390, 4-HR, 28-RBI, and 19-SB. He dropped playing football (punter), but remains committed to Clemson, a school he might visit someday to buy some blue cheese. Has an 87 arm from the outfield and 89 on the mound. 6.31-60.

     2.    Chicago Cubs – RHSP – Clinton Hollon – Woodford H.S. (KY) – It’s always safer to pick a college starter that has always proved they can handle the pressure, but the overall talent in this draft is dominated the first day coming out of the high schools. IMO, Hollon is the best out there. His fastball comes in at 90-94 (hits 96-97), with a greatly improved 82 slider, and an more exciting 78 changeup. ¾ arm slot, verbally committed to Kentucky.

     3.    Colorado Rockies – RHSP -  Ryan Stanek – Arkansas - Stanek is the real deal and will stop the flood of high schoolers being picked first. He was a 3rd round pick (Seattle) in 2010, but passed and has run up impressive stats for Arkansas. His fastball sits 91-95, but does touch 97. There’s also a plus 81-83 curve and he’s one + pitch away from a front starter.

     4.    Minnesota Twins – C – Jeremy Martinez – Mater Dei H.S. (CA) – This school keeps turning them out; in fact, there might be another player I writer about before the day is up. Martinez is the top catcher in the draft. In fact, he might be the best defensive catcher (pop time 1.87) in 10-years. The right body (5-11, 187), and he has the tools to hit. He just has to develop them.

     5.      Cleveland Indians – RHSP – Mark Appel – Stanford – Don’t worry. We’ll get back to the high school kids soon, but Cleveland just won’t pass on Appel. It’s going to cost them, but they will get a projected SP1-2 pitcher that could end the year easily in AA.

     6.      San Diego Padres – SS – Oscar Mercado – Gaither H.S. (FL) - .370/.461/.506 as a junior, the 6-2, 175 senior is a vacuum cleaner at short. Projects out as a 5-tool player, but it will take some time.

    7.    Miami Dolphins – 3B/1B – Kris Bryant – San Diego – I’ve got Bryant lower than he might go. He has the talent and projectability to even go as the first pick overall. 6-5, 215 big dog with projectable 30+ HR power. Needs to beef up and work on plate discipline. Occasional Dave Kingman comparison.

    8.    Kansas City Royals – LHSP – Sean Manaea – Indiana State – Manea shined in the summer games and passed Stephen Gonsalves as the top lefty in the draft. Just owned the Cape Cod League (5-1, 1.22, 51.2-IP, 85-K). Easily could go higher.
    9.    Toronto Blue Jays – 3B – Trey Williams – College of the Canyons (CA.) – Williams was one of the top hitting prospects in the 2012 draft, sent all the signs that he wouldn’t sign, was drafted by St. Louis in the 11th round, passed on signing, signed with Pepperdine, unsigned with Pepperdine, and signed with some place called the College of the Canyons (this guy sounds like trouble) . I thought that was the name of a cheap wine. Anyway, who cares, he’s a big time hitter and freshman eligible.

(Note to Mets fans… there are a bunch of excellent pitching prospects still on the board at this point… LHP Stephen Gonsalves, and RHPs Karsten Whitsen, Bobby Wahl, and Ryne Stanek… but, as I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I’m committed to picked in the order of “best player available” at the time of the pick)

     10.                      New York Mets – OF – Austin Wilson – Stanford – Wilson is the top college outfielder in the nation. 6-5, 245… was offered a ton of cash in 2010 by St. Louis, but passed. 2012 at Stanford was considered a ‘slump’: .285/.389/.493, 10-HR, 53-RBI, 221-AB, only 44-K, 24-BB. Projects to a 30-100 guy throughout his career.

    11.                      Philadelphia Phillies – OF-RHSP – Scott Frazier – Pepperdine (note - I might have this kid a too low... frankly, I knew very little about him until he exploded on us this summer). Some, including one of our readers here, have him as the number one player in next June's draft. We need to keep an eye on him.

     12.                      Milwaukee Brewers – C-1B Zach Collins – American Heritage H.S. (FL) - Zach is a 6-5, 220 behometh that is projected to end up at 1B. 7.08-60... 78-C-to-2B, 1.94 Pop... there's really big power here and whoever drafts this kid gets a projected 30+ home run hitter. Still uncommitted, so we all know what that means :)

  13.                      Boston Red Sox – RHSP – Dylan Covey – San Diego - Covey is a personal favorite of mine and I'd gladly welcome him as a Met. 2012: 17-G, 6-3, 3.32, 81.1-IP, but only 50-Ks and 43-BB. Highly recruited out of high school. Drafted 14th overall in 2010 by Milwaukee. I look for a big 2012-2013 from Dylan.

   14.                      Seattle Mariners – RHSP – Bobby Wahl - Mississippi -

Bobby is a 6-3, 200 pound righty Friday starter with a 2011-201 stat line of: 7-4, 2.55, 99.0-IP, 104-K. Repertoire includes 92-93 FB that hits 95, an 82-84 slider and a 78-80 changeup. Wahl could step right into AA and his own which makes him particularly attractive to small market teams.

  15.                      Arizona Diamondbacks – C – Reese McGuire – Kentwood H.S. (Wash) -
another of the great crop of high school catchers this year, McGuire is also known fro his defensive abilities; however, has projectable pop to all fields. Could wind up at 3B. 83mph to 2nd, 1.84 pop time, 0.69 0-60. Committed to San Diego.

16.                      Los Angeles Angels – LHSP Stephen Gonsalves – Cathedral Catholic H.S. (CA) -

17.                      Los Angeles Dodgers – 1B – Dominic Ficociello - Arkansas

18.                      Baltimore Orioles – RHSP – Adam Plutko - UCLA

19.                      Pittsburgh Pirates – RHSP – A.J. Vanegas - Stanford

20.                      Detroit Tigers – C – Logan Koch – South Mecklenburg H.S. (NC)

21.                      St. Louis Cardinals – RHSP Cheyne Bickel – Dwyer H.S. (FL)

22.                      Oakland Athletics – LHSP Kevin Ziomek - Vnderbilt

23.                      Tampa Bay Rays – LHSP – A.J. Puk – Washington H.S. (AL)

24.                      San Francisco Giants – C – Chris Okey – Eustis H.S. (FL)

25.                      Chicago White Sox – RHSP – Tom Windle - Minnesota

26.                      Atlanta Braves – RHSP –RHSP Karsten Whitson -Florida -

27.                      Washington Nationals – 3B – Cavan Biggio – St. Thomas H.S.

28.                      Texas Rangers – RHSP – Ryan Deeter - UCLA

29.                      New York Yankees – RHSP – Jonathan Crawford -

30.                      Cincinnati Reds – OF – Brian Ragira - Stanford
