The Gnats are in a bit of a funk these days, offensively, but they seem to be producing just enough to win.

St Lucie (15-8) wallops Tampa (10-13) 9-2

B-Met pitchers were homer prone tonight, and the long ball was their undoing. Akron scored their final 5 runs on a 2 run shot and 3 solo bombs. Binghamton tried to Match Akron with two 2 run homers in the bottom of the 6th, one by Josh Rodriguez and one by Cory Vaughn, to tie the score, but it just wasn’t enough.

Draft 13 – Carlos Salazar, Trey Ball, Jonah Wesely, Ryne Stanek, Dillon Overton

Dan Kirby@DanMKirby

Kerman HS (CA) RHP Carlos Salazar: 7 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 11 K/2 BB. Now has 0.19 ERA, 91 K/18 BB over 48.2 IP (16.9 K/9

In his last start, 6'-5" LHP Trey Ball had 11 K/0 BB, 0 ER, 2 H over 7 IP, hitting 93 mph

Tracy HS (CA) LHP Jonah Wesely's last 3: 18 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 43 K/6 BB (21.5 K/9), includes an 18 K no-no

Ryne Stanek, RHP, Arkansas - Through his first five starts, the 6’-4” right-hander had a 3.75 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 20 K/13 BB over 21.2 innings. His stock was plummeting as people questioned his control and ability to go late in games as his 4.2 IP/per start was concerning for someone considered a frontline starter. Over his last five starts, he has clearly quieted critics and has placed himself back in talks for the top 5-10 picks in the 2013 MLB draft. Over that span, he has a 0.54 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 32 K/8 BB over 33.2 innings. link

A Home For Buck - Cimcinnati Reds

Cincinnati Reds

                Catchers –  Devin Mesoraco (.281 – pre-ARB) – Ryan Hanigan (.079 – ARB/2)

                                2013-24 Prospects – none

                Outfielders – Shin-Soo Choo (.366 – FA/2014) – Xavier Paul (.320 – ARB/1) – Jay Bruce (.282 - $12.542 thru 2016) – Derrick Robinson (.250 – pre/ARB) – Chris Heisey (.179 – ARB/1)

                                2013-14 Prospects – Billy Hamilton (2013) -

                Starters –  Cingrani (1.80 - ) – Johnny Cueto (2.60 - $10mil/2014) – Mat Latos (2.73 - $7.25/2014) – Homer Bailey (3.24 – ARB/3) – Bronson Arroyo (3.54 – FA/2014) – Mike Leake (3.81 – ARB/1)

                                2013-14 Prospects – Daniel Corcino (2013) –

Observation – There are no DH players here, so it’s catch him or pass. Mesoraco has come up short in both 2011 and 2012 so any trade here would depend up I he can keep hitting like he is now.

Also, there isn’t much available in the minors and I haven’t seen Hamilton do anything really great other than steal bases. I have no idea who the Mets would trade for here.

B-Mets 7, Aeros 2

Verrett Cruises in 7-2 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY – Logan Verrett allowed two runs on just two base hits through eight innings as the B-Mets topped the Akron Aeros, 7-2, Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
Alonzo Harris got the offense going right away, smashing a leadoff home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first. Akron’s Chris Wallace matched Harris with a solo shot against Verrett to lead off the top of the second; one of the two base hits allowed by the right-hander. The B-Met offense continued their success against LHP Matt Packer, tallying single runs in each of the first four innings.
The Aeros scored on a sacrifice fly by Giovanny Urshela in the top of the fifth, but once again Binghamton responded. In the bottom of the sixth, Allan Dykstra hit a sac fly to score Alonzo Harris, and Blake Forsythe blew the game open with a two-run double down the right field line to give Binghamton a 7-2 lead.
Verrett’s day ended after eight innings. He finished up by retiring his final 11 hitters, and 21 of his last 22, to earn his league-leading fourth victory.
The B-Mets (12-10) and Aeros (9-13) face off in a rubber match Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. The B-Mets will send RHP Jacob deGrom (0-2, 1.38) to the mound against RHP Paulo Espino (1-0, 3.86). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
POSTGAME NOTES: Alonzo Harris went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 10 games…Eight different B-Mets got at least one base hit, and all nine starters reached base safely.

Working overnight, so a limited report.

Blue Jays Designate Aaron Laffey For Assignment

A nice little 1-2 is delivering out of the St. Lucie bullpen. On Friday night, Jim Fuller (0.00, H-4) pitched the 8th followed by T.J. Chism (1.35, SV-3). Fuller is the ex-starter out of Southern Connecticut State who was converted to the pen late last season. He never had an ERA above 3.38 since 2008 until the 6.15 he produced last year for Savannah. The lefty now has thrown 10.1 innings in five outings, giving up only four hits while striking out 10 (6-BB). Chism has had nothing but success since being drafted in the 32nd round of the 2009 draft out of La Salle University. He had 19 saves for the Sand Gnats last season (2.34) and has produced a WHIP of 0.97 so far this season. A nice combo.

Right now, Binghamton’s RHSP Rafael Montero is the most exciting thing we have in the system. They even talked about him in the post-game SNY report Friday night. Bobby V and Bobby O made some great points about going directing from AA to the MLB. As they said, AA is a league of prospects while AAA is a league of ex-major leaguers. Much different from each other. It’s one thing to pitch well against your peers, but it’s another to strike out players that have history in the majors. The most important thing that is happening here is the fact that Montero has elevated his ETA to opening day 2014. Think of it… Harvey, Niese, Wheeler, Gee, Montero. We’re a Synder away from excellence.

Logan Verrett stat line yesterday at Binghamton: 4-0. 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 2.48 ERA. There usually are very few moves this time of the year; however, the Mets want might to consider sending Verrett to Las Vegas to replace Carlos Torres (6.27), who keeps getting his clocked clean. Verrett is a college boy who turns 23 in June so he should be ready to get knocked around in that lack of atmosphere.

Speaking of Las Vegas, check the ERA’s out: Wheeler: 5.79, Schwinden: 6.75, Peavey: 4.30, Germen: 5.79, Gorski: 6.59, Owen: 8.44, Rodriguez: 6.30, Hampson: 7.88, Kolarek: 11.25, Henn: 10.80… but, there also is Collin McHugh – 1.93.

From Toby Hyde
- Michael Fulmer (torn meniscus): threw one inning and 12 pitches Wednesday in an extended spring training game without any issue. He will proceed on a standard starter’s schedule to stretch out his arm to prepare for game action.

- Luis Mateo (elbow): He’s resting/rehabbing in Port St Lucie. He left his start on April 15th. The idea is that he will begin throwing in the next week-10 days depending on how his elbow progresses. One scout who saw Mateo in the Florida State League really liked him; he saw him as an above average big league starter – like a #2 level guy.

- Cory Mazzoni (elbow): According to Lynn Worthy, he is throwing again, and is looking towards a bullpen in the next week.
