2015 Draft Profile - LHP - Nathan Kirby - University of Virginia - UPDATED 11-13-14
11-13-14 - Minor League Madhouse - 6. Minnesota Twins: Nathan Kirby, LHP Virginia - Nathan Kirby had an interesting year, being a part of the 2014 College World Series runner up, and then pitching, albeit briefly, in the Cape Cod League. Kirby is the latest in a line of Virginia aces who have potential to be reliable big league rotation options. His offerings have some room for improvement, and his mechanics are easy to figure out, thanks to his college pitching coach. Still, as far as left handed college pitchers go, Kirby stands a chance to be the best in this year’s class. Minnesota’s first round draft history has been exclusively prep for the past three seasons, with Byron Buxton, Kohl Stewart and Nick Gordon representing the future of the Twins. Assuming the competitive target date for the team is 2017, now might be the perfect time to invest in a college pitcher. http://minorleaguemadhouse.com/2014/10/18/early-2015-mlb-mock-draft-part-1/
9-30-14 - 9-30-14 – Through The Fence - 8. Chicago White Sox — Nathan Kirby, LHP, Virginia - Kirby was brilliant for the Cavaliers all year but struggled a bit down the stretch. He logged a lot of innings over the year and was facing some quality bats in the College World Series. On April 8, he tossed what most consider the best game of the season, striking out 18 to one walk in a no-hitter against Pittsburgh. Over 18 starts, he had a 2.06 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 112 K/33 BB over 113.1 innings, holding opponents to a .175 BAA. The 6’-3”, 190 pound southpaw has a plus curveball, a fastball that sits in the low/mid 90s with late life and movement, as well as a change-up that is rapidly getting better. He has great command of his stuff and has some of the best swing-and-miss stuff in the 2015 MLB draft. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-mock-1-0/44039#46FUm3YdfAufQr1H.99
9-11-14 – Fangraphs Top 50 Players in Draft - 21. Nate Kirby, LHP, Virginia: Kirby didn’t pitch much this summer but didn’t need to after a huge sophomore campaign put him in first round contention; at his best, Kirby sits 92-94 mph with an above average breaking ball and feel to pitch. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-mlb-draft-top-51/
7-9-14 - B/R - 5. Houston Astros Select Virginia LHP Nathan Kirby - This is an instance where you want to bet on the upside left in a college starter. Nathan Kirby is the Friday starter (No. 1) for a loaded Virginia team and dominated to the tune of 102 strikeouts, 58 hits allowed and a 1.36 ERA in 99.1 innings this year. What makes Kirby all the more intriguing for the 2015 draft is that he's a 6'2", 185-pound left-hander with a fastball that plays better than its average velocity thanks to arm-side run due to a three-quarters arm angle. He also flashes an above-average curveball and solid changeup. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2085268-mlb-mock-draft-2015-brs-official-early-predictions-for-next-years-top-10/page/2
6-30-14 – Through The Fence – Early College Prospects - 1. Michael Matuella, RHP, Duke - Matuella burst onto the scene earlier this year, thanks in part to Frankie Piliere at Perfect Game, who tweeted out that Matuella was a potential 1.1 for next year. The 6’-6”, 225 pound right-hander proceeded to make Piliere look like a genius as he showed everything you want in a first-overall pick. Obviously, he has the ideal size you want in an ace. He also showed the stuff, headlined by fastball that can touch 97 mph and sits 93-96. He adds two potential plus off-speed pitches in a 79-82 mph, 12-6 curveball with great depth and an 83-86 mph slider with tight spin. His change-up sits 87-89 and is a decent offering already. He has great command of his pitches and finished the season with a 2.78 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 69 K/15 BB over 58.1 innings. Opponents hit just .190 against him, he allowed just one home run and only hit two batters — pretty good for a power arm like his. All eyes will be on him next year and the upside is silly. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-early-30-college-prospects/43327
6-23-14 -
6-6-14 - There have been two versions of Nathan Kirby in the past two seasons — the one who labored through his freshman year, and the one who has embarrassed opposing hitters all season as a sophomore.
Last June, the idea that Kirby could be starting Game One of a best-of-three NCAA tournament super regional for Virginia (47-13) might've seemed far-fetched. There was no question he had the talent last year, but the confidence wasn't there... http://articles.dailypress.com/2014-06-06/sports/dp-spt-advance-maryland-uva-ncaa-baseball-0607-20140606_1_u-va-nathan-kirby-maryland
6-3-14 - Mack: We're now talking about the probable first left handed pitcher that will be drafted and possibly the first player overall in the entire draft. Virginia's 6-3, 190 pound Nathan Kirby comes with all the accolades one is given when you are known as a 'power pitcher'.
His college career actually got off to a slow start (6.06-ERA as a freshman) but he quickly followed that in the NECBL with an 81-K/54-IP, 2.32 summer season.
He features a 91-94 fastball that is well know for its late movement. His curve ball sets up the heat. He's well known for his command which was especially demonstrated on April 8th when he struck out 18 Pitt Panthers (one shy of the NCAA record), on the way to a no-hitter.
Reese Kaplan -- What Are We Thankful For As Mets Fans?
Watching Juan Lagares track down balls in centerfield and
use his rifle arms to nail runners who foolishly try to take the extra base on
him
Seeing unheralded Jacob de Grom step in and pretty much fill
Matt Harvey’s shoes when his season was lost to Tommy John surgery
Speaking of which, Matt Harvey is back and ready to step
into the 2015 rotation to give the Mets something of an embarrassment of
pitching riches
Watching Lucas Duda blossom into the 30 HR hitter the club
had pretty much given up hope of ever seeing
Seeing Jenrry Mejia make the transition from inconsistent
starter to shutdown closer while displaying animation not seen on the mount since
Pedro Martinez and Tug McGraw
Seeing Wilmer Flores finally get a shot to play on a regular
basis and having him deliver numbers that would put him in the upper echelon of
major league shortstops if extrapolated over a full season
Appreciating Travis d’Arnaud delivering on the great promise of a
middle-of-the-order slugging threat after his return from Las Vegas
Seeing Bartolo Colon demonstrate you don’t necessarily need
a 98 mph fastball or a trick pitch to fool major league hitters
Witnessing the major step forward made by Jeurys Familia as
he became a force to be reckoned with in the 8th inning role
Despite not making the team out of spring training, seeing
Vic Black make batters look foolish with the movement of his pitches
Daniel Murphy made his first All Star appearance as a steady
force in the 2 hole, delivering doubles seemingly at will
Seeing the Mets uncharacteristically reaching into their
pockets to pay for a professional hitter in Michael Cuddyer to help fill the
void in the outfield
Seeing the team admit its mistakes by severing ties with the
likes of Chris Young, Jose Valverde, Kyle Farnsworth and others when they
simply weren’t getting it done
As the team moves into the Winter Meetings there are no
gaping holes left to fill, just some tinkering with an extra lefty in the
bullpen, some bench pieces, and some clearing of payroll
And most of all, that Terry Collins’ multiyear contract is mercifully over and he’s on a very short one-year leash to demonstrate whether or not he’s
capable of pushing the team into contention

Tom Brennan - A CALL TO ARMS - VOL. 8: MY 12 LOWER MINOR PROSPECT STARTERS
A CALL TO ARMS – VOL. 8 – MY 12 LOWER
MINOR PROSPECT STARTERS by Tom Brennan
OK, OK…let me get right to it. If Mets’ starters were made of liquid,
we’d have pitchers and pitchers full of pitchers. (That pun was all wet, I
know).
So far, in Volumes 1 through 7, I
noted that the Mets, in my opinion have 22 starting pitchers or prospects of
varying degrees of potential.
At the risk of being redundant, and
primarily for those who missed those 7 Volumes, let me recap:
A list of 22 guys:
Seven current big league starters: Colon, Harvey, deGrom, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, and Montero. Nothing written about them, you already know it all about ‘em.
Two uber-prospects who on many other
teams could be in the starting rotation in April 2015: Thor and Matz. You know these guys too, so let
someone else fill you in on these 2 dandy pitchers.
Three dudes who have made quite the
case as to being major league ready, or nearly so: Logan Verrett, Matt
Bowman, and Tyler Pill. (Volumes
1, 2, 3 of my series).
Three pitchers (well, 4, as it was a tossup on the last 2, so you pick 1 of them), who are a step further down from those above: Erik Goeddel, Gabe Ynoa, Darin Gorski and Greg Peavey. These were covered in Volumes 4, 5 and 6.
Volume 7, I hit on 1 guy (Luis Mateo) whose
high promise has run head on into Tommy John, and 5 guys who have, to me, been
slightly, or more than slightly, disappointing: (Michael Fulmer,
Domingo Tapia, Matt Koch, Luis Cessa, and Rainy Lara). The latter 2 I was perhaps taking a
hard line on, as the disappointment is more due to their earlier strong
pitching slipping to average as they’ve moved up to A and AA. On some teams, the latter 2 might
still be in that team’s top 10.
Now for Volume 8.
Since the above totals 22 starters,
surely there can’t be any more prospects, right? WRONG! Let me add 12 more, bringing us up to
a whopping 34 guys, as I zero in more on guys from mid A Savannah southward. I could have split these up into
multiple articles, but there are so many, let’s just hit some highlights.
1. Marcos Molina – a name everyone will be talking
about soon enough…heck, he is already spoken of. The 19 year old won a Mets Sterling
award, is the Mets’ 16 ranked overall prospect on their website, and killed it
in Brooklyn in 2014, leading the league in ERA, WHIP and Ks (7-3. 1.77, 76
innings, 0.84 WHIP, 91 Ks). Seems
to be a front end rotation guy in the making, mid-rotation at worst. I’m predicting he skips Savannah and
heads to St Lucie – if there is room.
2. Rob Whelan – now tossing in the Arizona Fall
League, the 20 year old righty had a fine Savannah season (shortened by a hand
burn injury early in the season). How
fine? 9-2, 1.94, 0.99 WHIP,
and 63 K in 70 innings “fine”. Another
guy who should be starting out in St Lucie, IMO.
3. Miller Diaz – a fine, if short, season, for
Miller, who missed most of June and July. He ended up throwing 68 innings, 1.04
WHIP, 2.25 ERA and 79 Ks in 68 innings. Off
to St Lucie in 2015 for the 22 year old righty, IMO.
4. John Gant – 11-5, 2.56, 1.20 WHIP, 114 Ks in 120
innings. Another
outstanding season for a righty starter in Savannah, and another St Lucie arm
in 2015.
5. Robert Gsellman – A stellar year in Savannah – 10-6,
2.55, 92 Ks in 116 innings. On
to St Lucie for the talented Mr. Gsellman.
6. Logan Taylor – back from injury in mid-2014, Logan
has done well when healthy since drafted in 2012. Listed at 6’5” ,205, he is 6-4, 2.20,
1.06 WHIP and 109 Ks in 114 innings since turning pro.
7. Corey Oswalt – after an injury which wiped out most
of his 2013, Corey rebounded with a 6-2, 2.26 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 67.2
innings, in which he struck out 59. The former 7th rounder in 2012 is 6’4”, 200 and just
turned 21.
8. Casey Meisner – a 3rd rounder right out of HS in 2013, Corey
finished with a bang in 2014 with 6 fine starts beginning July 29:36 innings,
38 Ksm just 6 earned runs. For
the season, the 6’7” righty, who will start 2015 as a 19 year old, ended up a
fine 5-3, 3.75 and more than a strikeout per inning for Brooklyn. Certainly Savannah-bound in 2015.
9. Martirez Arias – another 6’7” dude, but who will
start next season at 24, Arias rebounded from a poor 2013 to have a stellar
season split between Kingsport and Brooklyn: 6-0, 1.11 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 60 Ks in
57 innings. At his age, the
clock is ticking but he got an A++ in 2014, so let’s look for him to move quickly
through Savannah to St Lucie in 2015.
10. Andrew Church – Church is the first of 2
highly regarded youngsters settling in in my 10th and 11th slots. Chuurch improved over his first
season, but the 2nd rounder
from 2013, who will pitch all of 2015 as a 20 year old, has lagged others
statistically. Only 31 Ks
in 52.2 innings in Kingsport Rookie Ball, ERA of 4.61 and WHIP of 1.65. He has a lot to prove in 2015, but
showed modest progress in his last seven 2014 starts (38 innings, just 13
earned runs), so he finished up on a positive note.
11. Blake Taylor – in our “let’s get a lefty on
the list” department, Blake (acquired as the PTBNL in the Ike Davis deal, was a
2nd rounder in 2013
like Church. Taylor
struggled with his control, and walked 39 vs. just 43 Ks in 62 innings, with a
3.48 ERA. He turns 20 next
August, so we hopefully see a blossoming in 2015.
12. Chris Flexen – a 14th rounder in 2012 who had a great year
in Kingsport in 2013, and skipped Savannah to start 2014. So far, so good. But he struggled, and then as he was 6th straight good start, he made his last
start June 28 before succumbing to Tommy John surgery and had bone chips
removed in July. The
6’3”, 215 righty will likely be on the shelf most of 2015, but I added him
mostly due to the promise he showed in 2013 and his positive adjustment in June
pre-injury. He did have one
superb start in Savannah, on June 2, 7 innings, 3 hits, 10 Ks. Get well quickly.
I avoided going down to the Gulf Coast
League for any candidates, but even after the 12 above, there were other fine
performances in Kingsport by a few other starters, such as Persio Reyes and
Jimmy Duff, but I drew the line at those 12 for now. Man, you gotta stop somewhere.
After all that, a guy could use some
rolaids, so maybe I’ll write about the relievers soon.
Have a great day.

Morning Report - November 25 - Hanley Ramirez, NL-LHRP, Ike Davis
I started to
write a column this morning about the excess amount of shortstops (on paper)
that the Red Sox now have. Yes, MLB-TV has Hanley
Ramirez playing in the outfield, but frankly, the last thing the Sox
need is another outfielder. It’s my guess that current shortstop Xander Bogaerts is in play and could be moved to a
team looking for a young (21-yrs old) prospect middle infielder.
I was going
to break out the numbers and put together a mock trade for one of the three
starters the Mets are trying to ship, but frankly, I stopped writing the column
and wrote this instead.
The Red Sox
don’t want Jon Niese, Dillon
Gee, or Bartolo Colon. They have their
own internal list of back end starters that can fill that bill.
And that
leads to the bigger problem. It’s not finding someone that will trade you a
shortstop… it’s finding something another team will accept as a trading partner
for one of their young prospects.
I’m not sure
the Mets will ever move these guys properly before guys like Noah Syndergaard, Rafael Montero,
and Steven Matz should be replacing them. You
know my plans for Montero.
Who ever
thought a guy that hit 30+ home runs a couple of years agon would be traded for
‘international pool money’? Is this the future for Gee or Niese? My guess is
Colon will play out his contract, Niese is safe until the all-star break, and
Gee could not survive spring training.
Amazing.
Continuing with the National League, I am once again surprsied with the amount of lefties some of these teams had in their pro-pen last season.

Purple Row[i]
on Ike Davis -
The Pirates
designated Ike Davis for assignment on Thursday,
putting themselves in a position to trade or release him if another team
doesn't put in a claim. Waiting for that to happen might be a risky
proposition, but it's possible no club would claim the 27-year-old first
baseman; Davis is projected to make $4.4 million next season, a lot of money
for player who has yet to put it all together.
However, if
Davis can be had on the cheap, he'd be a huge upside play. The 2008 first-round
draft pick has huge power potential, as he showed with a 32-homer campaign in
2012, and can get on base in ways that don't require a hit. Davis finished with
the fourth-best walk rate in baseball -- and was tops in the NL -- among
players with 300 or more plate appearances. Parting with a proven road hitter
in Morneau would be tough, but having a player like Davis who has intriguing
on-base skills would soften the blow.

2015 Draft Profile - SS/2B - Alex Bregman - LSU - UPDATED 11-13-14
11-13-14 - Minor League Madhouse - 10. Philadelphia Phillies: Alex Bregman, SS/2B LSU - While it’s pretty obvious that JP Crawford is the heir apparent for when Jimmy Rollins does eventually retire, (my over/under is 2016), the question remains how long his double play partner, Chase Utley will be around. While Utley did bounce back a bit this year, it’s time for the Phillies to start developing another infield talent. Alex Bregman has been one of the more celebrated collegians, especially since he was an All American pick in his freshman year. Bregman may not have been as good in his sophomore year, dropping his draft stock from top 5 to top 10, but given his potential, there is bound to be at least one team interested in nabbing him at a slot discount. Bregman is a reliable producer who will be a solid offensive contributor if used well, and the Phillies would greatly benefit adding him to a roster that would include his Tigers teammate, Aaron Nola. http://minorleaguemadhouse.com/2014/10/18/early-2015-mlb-mock-draft-part-1/
9-30-14 - 9-30-14 – Through The Fence - 6. Minnesota Twins — Alex Bregman, SS, LSU - Bregman is a ballplayer. Aside from all of his intangibles and instincts for the game, he is also one of the better hitters in the 2015 MLB draft. After a sensational freshman year in which he hit .369/.417/.546 over 67 games with 16 stolen bases, he put together another impressive season as a sophomore. Over 63 games, he hit .316/.397/.455 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 12 stolen bases. He has drawn 51 walks to just 46 strikeouts over 130 career games, showing an advanced approach at the plate. He has been a member of Team USA baseball since his high school days, and you won’t find a better leader. Some are split on whether he can remain at shortstop, but even if he moves over to second, the bat would play up. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-mock-1-0/44039#46FUm3YdfAufQr1H.99
9-11-14 – Fangraphs Top 50 Players in Draft - 12. Alex Bregman, SS, LSU: One of the most famous players in college baseball had a bit of a down sophomore campaign and some scouts think he still fits better at 2B as a pro, but he flashes four above average tools and double-digit homer power from a simple swing. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/2015-mlb-draft-top-51/

8-14-14 - 4. Alex Bregman, SS (Louisiana State, Jr.). The consensus Freshman of the Year in 2013, he wasn't as spectacular at LSU or with Team USA as a sophomore. Bregman still paced the college national team in runs (20), RBIs (17) and steals (10), and he still drew Dustin Pedroia comparisons for his all-around package of tools. Bregman is an aggressive right-handed hitter with pull power, and his instincts enable his average-to-solid speed and arm strength to play up on the bases and in the field. He's not as fluid as a typical Major League shortstop, so most scouts project him as a second baseman.
7-21-14 - The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team defeated Japan 6-3 to win the championship game at the 27th edition of the Haarlem-Honkbal Week at Pim Mulier Stadium on Sunday.
B/R - LSU's Alex Bregman is the version of Trea Turner, a first-round pick in the 2014 draft, I always wanted to see. The Tigers shortstop has a slight build at 6'0" and 180 pounds but generates good pop. Bregman's strength comes from the wrists because there's very little load to his swing. He takes a short stride toward the mound, but his back elbow is set up high, and his hands are in position to move forward as soon as he decides to pull the trigger. There's plenty of bat speed to help him turn around good fastballs in pro ball. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2085268-mlb-mock-draft-2015-brs-official-early-predictions-for-next-years-top-10/page/2
"Bregman always hits and he hits it hard," an area scout said. "He has some power and speed, and I think he has a chance to play shortstop." http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/kyle-funkhouser-leads-list-of-top-prospects-on-team-usa?ymd=20140814&content_id=89585038&vkey=news_mlb
7-21-14 - The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team defeated Japan 6-3 to win the championship game at the 27th edition of the Haarlem-Honkbal Week at Pim Mulier Stadium on Sunday.
The Honkbal Week championship is the fourth in the history of the Collegiate National Team, having previously won the title in 2000, 2002 and 2008. It now holds an all-time record of 29-5 in the tournament.
Three U.S. players earned individual awards with Chris Okey (Clemson) claiming the "Carl Angelo Most Popular Player" award, Christin Stewart (Tennessee) taking home "Best Hitter" honors and Alex Bregman (LSU) being named the Honkbal Week Most Valuable Player.

LSU SS Alex Bregman really stung ball today. Hard contact in 3/5 PAs. HR to LF. Quick hands, ball really jumps of bat. Played well at SS
6-30-14 – Through The Fence – Early College Prospects - 3. Alex Bregman, SS, LSU - I could talk about Bregman all day. I have been a fan since his Team USA Baseball days in high school, and you aren’t going to find a better leader and person out there — on and off the field. Aside from his intangibles and instincts for the game, he also happens to be a damn good player. After a freshman season in which he hit 369/.417/.546 over 67 games with 18 doubles, seven triples, six home runs and 16 stolen bases, the 6’-1” right-hander put up impressive numbers again this year. Over 63 games, he hit .316/.397/.455 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 12 stolen bases. He has drawn 51 walks to just 46 strikeouts over 130 career games, showing an advanced approach at the plate. More power should come as he matures, and he has all the tools to stick at shortstop but could end up at second base at the next level. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2015-mlb-draft-early-30-college-prospects/43327
6-21-14 - Clint Longenecker @Clint_BA
LSU 2B Alex Bregman showed incredibly quick hands in smashing a line drive double down the LF line for CNT today. Ran 4.20 to 1b in next PA
6-4-14 - Mack - LSU SS/2B Alex Bregman is what you would call a pure hitter. He led his college team in hits, doubles, triples, and steals... as a freshman... earning him Baseball America's Freshman of the Year. He has a fair amount of pop and it's tough to find a weakness in his game. Scouts said he easily would have been one of the top ten picks in 2014, if he was eligible. Right now, I project him in the 1-3 range.
