Hot Stove - 11-27-17

First 'big deal' of the Hot Stove season - Texas signs P Doug Fister to a 1-year, $4mil deal, with a team option for 2019.

Should you allow your Venezuelan prospects to return home in the off season? Well, Milwaukee Brewers prospect infielder, Javier Betancourt was flown to Milwaukee to be treated after being shot during an argument in his home country.

Minnesota 1B, Byung-Ho Park, returns to his home country of Korea, inking a $1.4mil contract (leaving $6,5mil on the table) with the Nexen Heroes of the KBO League.

It is reported that the Washington Nations will NOT resign injury plagued outfielder (OF5?), Jayson Werth.

LAD outfielder, Andre Ethier, (OF4???) plans on playing in 2018.

Reese Kaplan -- A Hot Stove Flashback Scenario

After a second straight playoff appearance Sandy Alderson made the almost unprecedented decision not to add a single major league player (or minor league piece nearly ready) to help propel the 2016 squad that was one-and-done in the post season forward to do better.  Considering the myriad of injuries they endured that season, it seemed an odd choice to gamble that everyone would return healthy without a backup plan.  Understandably, they did worse.

Recently Mack opined that Zack Borenstein and Greg Purke better not be the sum total of Sandy Alderson’s off-season machinations, but we HAVE seen this movie before.  It was just last year.  As cynical as I am, even I don’t believe that will happen, particularly since there is a small pot of money to spend.  Also, the self-professed smartest guy in the room had to observe how 2017 unfolded.

Still, it got me to thinking…what if there was a repeat of the last off-season and no additions were made to the 2016 roster.  What would the team look like?

First Base

Despite all of the rumblings about disappointment with Dom Smith, he still has a year or so to prove what he can do as Peter Alonso barks at his heels.  Whether that happens in Queens or in Las Vegas, the only alternative at this point would be Wilmer Flores.  I’m confident Flores could provide 25/75 at minimum at 1st base and that’s all you could realistically expect from the 32 year old Carlos Santana, so it would be the height of foolishness to spend on that position at all.

Second Base

Here’s the biggest position player issue for the Mets.  Assuming Asdrubal Cabrera is on 3rd base, that leaves the motley crew of Gavin Cecchini and Matt Reynolds fighting it out for the position unless Smith wins the 1st base job outright.  Then add Wilmer Flores to the mix.  That won’t make many people warm and fuzzy who want to be strong up the middle as Wilmer’s best position on the field is DH.  Then there’s the traditional Mets’ hope and fantasy that players will miraculously heal in record time which might interject T.J. Rivera into the conversation as well.

Shortstop

While he came up with even more fanfare than Dom Smith, Amed Rosario, you could argue, failed just as spectacularly.  No one seems to be talking about his slash line of .248/4/10 over a 170 AB trial.  He added 7 SBs.  Smith, by comparison, hit .198/9/26.  Smith more than doubled both run producing categories yet Rosario gets a completely free pass.  They have no Plan B beyond the AAAA Matt Reynolds and the lead gloved duo of Wilmer Flores and Asdrubal Cabrera, so it’s his job for 2018 to sink or swim.

Third Base

They’re paying Asdrubal Cabrera to be the answer to David Wright’s health situation.  While I was not in favor of bringing him back as a way of changing the culture, offensively he’s a credible if not spectacular player who for what he provides is fairly paid at $8.5 million.  There is no conversation whatsoever about anyone else playing here, but the usual spate of infield backup options exist here as well.

Catcher

Formerly the poster child for the fans’ wrath, Travis d’Arnaud had fewer days lost to injury this year than in previous seasons and did produce 16 HRs and 57 RBIs in just 348 ABs.  Coupled with the rejuvenated Kevin Plawecki the Mets allowed the Cubs to take Rene Rivera and appear set with this right handed tandem for the coming year.

Left Field

If the Mets’ version of the straw that stirs the drink can remember to imbibe enough fluids to keep from cramping up, they are solid in LF with Yoenis Cespedes.  It will be interesting to see how well the new manager communicates with the superstar diva.

Center Field

While you would think any club that boasted a Gold Glove winner on its roster would be set here, with Michael Conforto’s injury they may not be able to withstand Juan Lagares’ bat in the lineup every day.  Furthermore, Lagares, like d’Arnaud, is not exactly Lou Gehrig out there.  Still, he would get the nod.

Right Field

Sandy Alderson’s first “proof” that he was the smartest guy in the room is likely the opening day starter in RF, Brandon Nimmo.  While no one questions the man’s desire or enthusiasm, the results have simply not been there.  His 2017 trial was better than he’s shown in the past.  However, a slash line of .260/5/24 is only slightly better than replacement level.  The glimmer of hope here is that as a latecomer to organized ball he may mature into his talent a bit later.  With Conforto out for the foreseeable future he should be starting daily.

Starting Rotation

Going into the season with hopes and prayers of recovery would mean your opening day rotation would include Jacob de Grom, Noah Syndergaard, Matt Harvey, Steve Matz and Zack Wheeler.  Backup options would include Seth Lugo, Robert Gselleman and Rafael Montero (if he is not traded).  While on paper it’s the rotation everyone always dreamed would exist, the fact is they have the collective structural solidity of a crystal chandelier facing the swing of Bryce Harper. It COULD  survive but I wouldn't bet the ranch on it.

Bullpen

Headed by the proven trio of Jeurys Familia, A.J. Ramos and Jerry Blevins, they are off to a good start here.  If they’re honest about going with an eight-man bullpen then you need to find five other warm bodies.  They would likely include Paul Sewald, Hansel Robles, Chasen Bradford, Josh Smoker and one of the three aforementioned backup starters and perhaps Kevin McGowan.

Outlook

I know I have well-earned reputation for being the naysayer here, but allow me to put on my rose colored glasses for a moment and suggest that it all hinges upon pitching.  If the starters can remain healthy and pitch to the best of their abilities, that lineup, while not exactly the stuff of which legends are made, is probably capable of delivering enough offense to support pitchers who give up 3 to 4 runs per game.  Since the Achilles heel seems to be pitching, that’s where I think the limited shekels need to be allocated to ensure the opportunity to win each day.  Anything that can be brought in to reinforce the offense is the cherry on top.

Hot Stove - 11-26-17

Korean outfield prospect, Ah-seop Son, has decided to stay home and not come stateside to play baseball in 2018. He agreed to a 4-year, $9.8 billion contract with the Lotte Giants. Oh... did I thell you that was 'won', not American dollars? It converts to around $8mil USA.

Japanese phenon, Shohei Ontani, has sent a letter to every major league team telling them what he could bring to the table if they signed him. Imagine what the Mets letter said.  "I could bring... EVERYTHING!"

Favorites for Ontani... yup... the Yanks.

Mike Puma says that the Mets might bring back Neil Walker to play second base. I'll believe this when I see it.

Two teams have made multi-year offers to relieve Bryan Shaw.

Mack’s Apple’s - 11-26-17 - Zach Borenstein, Carlos Santana, Playoffville, Juiced Baseballs, Dee Gordon

Good morning.

“A one-time minor league Player of the Year in the Angels’ organization, where he was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2011 draft, Borenstein has never appeared in a major league game.” Borenstein is also capable of playing a bit at first base when needed.

While this is not an earth-shattering move by Sandy Alderson, it does demonstrate he is in the game as a far as trying to fill as many holes as he can before spring training begins. The invitation extended to Borenstein to attend spring training with an opportunity to make the team that goes North is a step in the right direction.

Borenstein won’t be the second coming of Carlos Delgado, but, the least he will be is a left-hand hitting Travis Taijerson. Does he have the potential of being the 5th outfielder in Flushing? Well, I guess so though I still wish the team would go big here before the season starts.

The Mets are supposedly interested in signing 1B Carlos Santana as first base insurance.

Santana is obviously the most talented first baseman available in the free agent market. He will play next season at 32-years old and there is supposedly 10 clubs interested in his services.

I can’t even begin to take this rumor serious.

The Mets outbid nine other teams? Are you serious?

And this guy is not going to sign with anyone for less than three years at a minimum of $20mil a year.

What about Dominic Smith? What about Peter Alonso?

Why not just shit can the entire draft process and just sign old guys to huge contracts?

No… this is all bullshit and just designed to get Smith to put the fudge bars down and get into the batting cage, not the heavy duty weight room.

 Playoffville

Scott Boras was asked about general manager Sandy Alderson’s plan to next season reduce a payroll that reached $155 million in 2017. Citing baseball’s skyrocketing revenues in recent years, Boras offered the metaphor of a wage earner receiving a substantial raise, but refusing to move his family into a nicer neighborhood.

“This is not about the ability to pay, this is about the choice to pay, and what you want to provide your fans,” Boras said. “Our game is very healthy.

“The team that is cutting payroll is providing their family less protection, for winning. They don’t have the resources. They are not living in the gated community of Playoffville.”

I am in total agreement with Boras.

There is so much money in baseball now, especially in cities like New York. If the Wilpon family wanted to build a champion baseball team, they easily could and still make a buck to take home.

The Wilpon family doesn’t want to build a great team. They want to build the most profitable business that they can. The business happens to use bats, balls, and gloves. It could be steel. It could be pillows like that dude from Minnesota  It’s just a business and they will never let any General Manager spend more than their corporate accountants tell them is the most that can be spent to keep their current profit margin.

Period.

LB insists the baseball is not juiced , but have a committee studying it anyway

MLB has steadfastly denied the baseball is juiced, of course, so much so that at one point this season they sent a memo to all 30 teams saying as much. Despite that, MLB has put together a committee to investigate the baseball and determine whether something has changed that has led to the home run spike. Mets assistant GM John Ricco confirmed it while speaking to Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News earlier this week.

Pairing Gordon with Amed Rosario will solidify the timeless adage of being strong up the middle. These two guys would provide exquisite defensive range and hopefully become a potent double play combination for the foreseeable future. At the plate, Gordon and Rosario will provide game-changing speed. Citi Field will become a triple’s haven and Gordon will bring his 60 stolen base potential to the top of the lineup.

It’s nice to see another Mets writer write about my ‘middle infield’ goals.

Tom Brennan - TIM TEBOW KEEPS WORKING

While Fats Domino Smith may be somewhere pushing back from a table now-less-filled with Thanksgiving leftovers (hopefully not - he is, I hope, instead gearing up to come into camp looking like Duane Johnson and hitting like George Foreman), Tim Tebow is psyched, focused confident, and working hard - real, real hard - this off-season, without let-up.

Don't ask me - read this article if you care to - especially if you are a scoffer:

Former baseball exec (and he had another job, can't quite recall what that was) George W. Bush had this to say about Tebow: "Do not misunderestimate him.  He may just go nukular this year."

Reese Kaplan -- CitiField, Where Rookies Came to Rot

It’s time for a chicken and egg argument.  Did rookie ballplayers for the most part do poorly because they weren’t prepared sufficiently for the majors or were they misused upon arrival by the guy with the lineup pencil?  What we will see is a fresh start in both regards this season with a revamped minor league leadership team and a new manager in the dugout in Queens.

Think about the previous ugly season in which a great many rookies made their debuts and second year players were forced into the lineup due to a multitude of injuries.  By my count you had the following non-veteran players given their first tastes of big league opposition and pretty much showed they weren’t quite up to the task:
  • Jamie Callahan
  • Gavin Cecchini
  • Chris Flexen
  • Robert Gsellman
  • Ty Kelly
  • Seth Lugo
  • Tomas Nido
  • Tyler Pill
  • Kevin McGowan
  • Matt Reynolds
  • Dom Smith
  • Jacob Rhame
  • Amed Rosario
  • Josh Smoker
  • Travis Taijeron
That’s an awful lot of dubious performances!

Phil Evans was one of the few who made the most of his limited opportunities, batting .303 in just 33 ABs while Asdrubel Cabrera and departing free agent Jose Reyes played every day.  So naturally, of course, they outrighted him off the 40-man roster.   I also give a pass to Paul Sewald who pitched solidly until overuse began to wear on him in August and September.  Chasen Bradford was actually pitching better at the major league level than he did in the minors through a 33 inning rookie debut.

Some of the aforementioned lackluster bunch are likely not in the mix anymore as they too have been booted from the 40-man roster.  Travis Taijeron left the organization to sign a minor league deal with the Dodgers and Tyler Pill will play his trade once more in Las Vegas.

Others probably are going to either be traded, cut loose or banished to AAA.  This group would include McGowan, Flexen, Cecchini and Reynolds.  I assume the high strikeout totals of Josh Smoker will merit him one more long look and the newcomers called up at the tail end of the year – Callahan and Rhame – will get a chance to show their stuff to the new boss.

The interesting thing to watch this year with a new approach to both training and motivation whether or not the idea they indeed did not receive sufficient preparation has merit or was it more a reflection of the major league staff and how they did or did not use these players.  Michael Conforto, Wilmer Flores and others know what it was like to produce but be shown the bench in favor of lesser performing players.  Again, new management should mean a new approach.

I would expect a few non-roster invitees to make some noise this year.  Drew Smith who came from Tampa in the Lucas Duda deal had the best stats of any of the multitude of relievers acquired.  If he’s still here, Adonis Uceta will be interesting to watch, as will the protected players Tyler Bashlor, Gershon Bautista, Luis Guillorme and Corey Oswalt.  There’s not a lot of talent in AAA so I would expect fortifications to come from outside the organization.

Hot Stove - 11-24-17

The Baltimore Orioles just doesn't seem to enjoy participating in the International signing bonus period... they traded international money ($500K) for the eight time since July 2nd, sending these bucks to Colorado for RHP Konner Wade.

Six Toronto prospects were busted last week for PEDs. Sounds like a hell of a party. That makes it 13 in two years.

Arizona stretched out RP Archie Bradley (73-IP, 1.73, 9.7-K/9) to become a starter next season.

Miami signs IF Yadiel Rivera.

The LAD released Cuban infielder Jose Miguel Fernandez (AA: .306/.366/.498 - ???
