The Herd:
-big pitching news… Jonathan Niese through 6.0 outstanding innings… 8Ks… only 1 ER
-boy, this team can’t catch a friggin’ break… up 3-1… bottom of the 7th in a 7 inning game… boom… another loss… even F-Mart had 3 hits, but Carlos Muniz blew the save and the game.
-can’t wait to read the Buffalo papers in the morning…
Fernando Martinez, OF, Mets (Triple-A Buffalo)
Wednesday’s stats: 0-for-3, 1 BB, 2 K
Martinez has been much-hyped since signed a seven-figure deal out of the Dominican four years ago. Since then, it’s been mostly mediocre performances, with constant excuses for his youth and constant injuries. Banged up again this spring, Martinez is still just 20, but he hasn’t had a consistent string of success anywhere for about three years now. Currently mired in a 1-for-18 slump that has dropped his triple-slash numbers to .233/.288/.411, it’s impossible to say that someone still under the legal drinking age is running out of time, but it’s fair to say that some out there are running out of patience.

B-Mets:
-big pitching news v2.0… SP Fernando Nieve pitched great his first outing… 3.2 IP, 2ER, 5Ks… not spectacular, but we’ll take it…
The B-Mets jumped on New Hampshire early with five runs in the first three innings off Fisher Cats starter Luis Perez and cruised to an 8-2 win in six innings in a ball game that was halted due to rain. Lucas Duda banged out a two-hit evening including a triple and drove in three runs.
RHP Fernando Nieve made the start for Binghamton (11-8) and worked 3.2 innings of no-hit baseball until giving up three consecutive extra base hits in the fourth inning, including a Brian Dopirak home run, which broke up the shutout and led to Nieve’s departure. In his longest outing in a B-Met uniform, Nieve gave up two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
The B-Mets got the scoring started in the second inning when Josh Petersen drove in Salvador Paniagua with a two-out double down the left field line. Paniagua went 2-4 with an RBI in his first start of the year.
In the third, Binghamton put up a four spot as nine men came to the plate against Perez making it 5-0 through three. Lucas Duda, who was previously 0-13 against left-handed pitchers, came through with a two-run single in the inning off Perez. Petersen drove the final run of the frame in with an RBI single to right.
Binghamton scored three more off New Hampshire (12-9) in the sixth as Celson Polanco was roughed up for the second straight outing by the B-Met hitters. Polanco gave up three runs to Binghamton April 25 and repeated the feat Friday night.
Mark Kiger led off the sixth with a double and was sacrificed to third by Ruben Tejada. After Garcia struck out, Jonathan Malo singled to drive home Kiger. Duda followed with his first triple of the season to score Malo. The scoring concluded when Paniagua came through with a single to drive home Duda and make it 8-2.
The Fisher Cats plated a run in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with one out against Eric Brown when the tarp went on the field. The game was called about an hour later erasing the occurrences of the seventh altogether.
Brown was named the winning pitcher, throwing 2.1 innings giving up a hit and striking out three

Lucy:
-big pitching news v3.0… Brad Holt had a decent outing Friday night… 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4Ks… nothing to write home about, but nothing to be ashamed at either… hopefully, this is a torunaround game for the Mets’ top pitching prospect
Gnats:
-big pitching news v4.0 – I just put out my Mets Top 50 Prospect list, and I didn’t have Sp1 Elvin Ramirez… he pitched another gem Friday night… 6.0 IP, 0ER, 1H, 6K, 2.96… I think I made a mistake here…
The Sand Gnats (13-9) scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice by Sean Ratliff in the top of the ninth and the bullpen shut it down in the bottom of the ninth as Savannah hung on for a, 2-1, win in front of 5,707 at Fluor Field at the West End. Jimmy Johnson (1-0) secured his first win while Erik Turgeon notched his third save. Savannah took the 1-0 lead in the eighth when Josh Satin hit a ball to the hole at short that bounced off the glove of Drive shortstop Ryan Dent and into left field allowing Jefry Marte to score. Not to be outdone though, Greenville tied the game in the bottom half and it was Dent doing the damage. With two down and runners at first and second, Dent hit a ball under the glove of Satin and into right field. Juan Lagares came up firing and put the throw right at home plate but it was just behind David Mailman, who scored from second and the stage was set for the Gnats ninth-inning heroics. It was a classic pitcher’s duel through the first seven innings as neither side could muster a run. Elvin Ramirez was lights-out for Savannah, allowing just one hit over six innings while striking out six. Manny Olivares pitched a perfect seventh before running into trouble in the eighth. The Sand Gnats collected 12 hits in the game but only pushed across the two runs as they left a season-high 12 men on base in the win. All but two members of the Gnats lineup had at least one hit in the game while five Sand Gnats collected two hits apiece.
