1. Daniel Murphy will be given every chance in the book to secure the full time second base job in 2011. Much emphasis has been placed in the off season to improve his defensive skills, but it’s hard to forget that, in 2009, when he couldn’t find a position to play, he still led the Mets in doubles.
2. There is absolutely no plans to rush Reese Havens to the majors, even if he is 100% healthy. Havens will play a ton in spring training, designed to test his legs for the upcoming season. He’ll start in Buffalo if he’s 100%; if not, Binghamton.
3. There is no name “on the board” for first base in Buffalo. Candidates include Lucas Duda, Nick Evans, Eric Campbell, Michael Fisher, Josh Satin, and Fernando Martinez. Neither Duda or Evans have been given any assurances that they will go to Queens in April.
4. The chances of Dillon Gee becoming the SP5 is decreasing every day. He’ll get his innings in ST, but Chris Capuano looks to be a lock for a rotation slot, and the Mets continue to try and sign another starter before pitchers and catchers report later on this month.
5. Right now, the Buffalo rotation would be Pat Misch, Boof Bonzer, Jenry Mejia, Josh Stinson, and Dylan Owen. A sixth option would be Tobi Stoner, returning from his DL stint.
6. LHRP Mike O’Connor’s chances of making it to Queens increases greatly if Capuano makes the rotation.
7. RP Brant Rustich is completely healthy for the first time as a pro and could be the dominant surprise of the season.
8. Bringing Luis Castillo to camp is window dressing. The "new Mets" have no plans on keeping any Omar drama around next year to keep the beat guys flamed... both Castillo and Oliver Perez will leave Port St. Lucie without uniforms.
