METS RELIEVE MICKEY CALLAWAY OF HIS DUTIES
FLUSHING, N.Y., October 3, 2019 – The New York Mets today announced that they have relieved Manager Mickey Callaway of his duties, effective immediately.
“We want to thank Mickey for his consistent work ethic and dedication over the last two seasons and I’m certain these characteristics will serve him well in his next opportunity,” Mets Executive Vice President & General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. “A decision like this is never easy, however, we believe it is in the best interest of the franchise at this time.”
Callaway posted a 163-161 (.503) record during his two seasons with the Mets. Callaway was named the Mets 21st manager in club history on October 23, 2017.

The Mets had the 6th best record in the NL... problem is only 5 make the playoffs.

From the NY Post: "For instance, multiple sources said the decision to limit Edwin Diaz’s usage early in the season was a direct order issued by team COO Jeff Wilpon. In an effort to preserve Diaz, the reliever was prohibited from pitching beyond one inning and saved for the ninth. Callaway got skewered publicly on multiple occasions for failing to deploy Diaz as the bullpen imploded, but absorbed the criticism, according to a source."
Can't fire Jeffy as he reminds me of M.Donald so aren't we lucky.
My biggest beef with him is the shabby state of the bullpen. THAT was supposed to be his area of expertise (he was lauded in Cleveland for handling the bullpen and the overall pitching staff). Granted, performance can vary from year to year, but the bullpen has been flat out terrible for both seasons under his watch. And, that includes different players each year.
His questionable decision making skills were also to blame, but I rank that behind the bullpen.
I hope the next manager brings some veteran experience to the squad......still pine for Joe Maddon, but that might not be
possible with the Angels interest. Girardi would be a nice alternative selection, IMO.
We've replaced one plantation owner (a Seaver quote about Grant) with another which is just wonderful.
Having Jeff looking over your shoulder has to be an annoyance for the manager and the GM.
Another reason for a veteran manager, perhaps?
Would a veteran manager put up with this?
I've assembled a lot of these same thoughts into tomorrow's post. You've all raised valid points. That leads to one conclusion for me...no previews, unfortunately :)
I would hope that BVW could provide some cover and a veteran could tune out the "noise" and focus on the team.....in theory, at least. Sounds better to me then a first time manager trying to adjust to his job AND Jeff's interference at the same time.
Can't get rid of Jeff, so what't the next best alternative?
Does BVW really want to trade for Astros Manager AJ Hinch?
tim britton mentioned Carlos Beltran as a potential candidate which to me is inspired. So obviously it will enver happen, but one of the astros coaches seems like a possibility. For me at least id want to hard pass on Girardi and maddon. (Maddon at least wants to actually be paid)
My take? Mickey was good in many ways, but made too many bad decisions, including the one on the last Monday of the season in the must win game that the Mets trailed 6-4 after 6, where he brought in...WALTER LOCKETT???
Give me a nasty manager who makes all the right calls over the nice guy who made far too many bad ones.
