Q - Some high school players not on the Top 100 that could climb up boards?

Jim Callis: I'll tag-team on this question with non-Top 100 guys from my half of the country who could move up ... Alabama HS LHP Maddux Bruns (huge ceiling), Louisiana HS SS Peyton Stovall, South Carolina HS RHP Daniel Brooks, Mississippi LHP Doug Nikhazy (high floor guy).

Weight: 245 lbs

Hits/Throws: R-R

Hometown: Mount Pleasant, SC

BA up to 93-94 mph with steep plane and sink, because of his stature, fastball heavy at times. Developing breaking ball and passable changeup right now. Struggles to repeat mechanics at times, but very promising young player.

Daniel Brooks is a 2021 RHP/1B with a 6-8 235 lb. frame from Mount Pleasant, SC who attends Bishop England. Extra big and tall young athlete with plenty of physical projection remaining. Step by step delivery, arm works well to a 3/4's arm slot with good extension, gets out front well at release. Fastball topped out at 93 mph with more potentially there as he continues to mature physically. Showed good depth on his curveball when he got on top of it out front, tends to get under it occasionally at release. Slows his mechanics down at release on his developing change up, turns it over well. Good athlete for his size, 7.28 runner in the sixty. Right handed hitter, wrapped barrel start with a drift into contact, well controlled swing, hits the ball out front well with some power and leverage. High ceiling young pitching talent.

Brooks enjoyed a very good summer on the circuit which saw him establish his name on national draft radars, and he did nothing but continue that ascent in Fort Myers, punching out 7 over 4 shutout innings, showing an easy, repeatable delivery with a fastball up to 94 mph and a curveball/changeup combo that projects well. There are lots of starter traits with excellent size here, and Brooks should be monitored closely next spring.

The fastball keeps getting faster, too.

It was 85 to 87 mph in the spring of 2019 when Brooks was a sophomore at Bishop England High School, then 88-90 at the end of last summer. It soared to 92-94 this summer as the rising senior dazzled his way across the national baseball showcase circuit.

“It will probably be 95 to 96 by the end of this fall,” said Brooks, who also plays basketball at Bishop England. “And probably 97 or 98 next spring.”

If you’re a batter, lean in for that outside part of the plate at your own peril.
