Mack - 2022 MLB Draft Report - RHP - Kumar Rocker

 Mack-s spin -

In my wildest dreams...

This starts a new piece of scouting paper on, potentially, the future Cy Young winner someday.

You will read a lot about who might be at fault here, but you will never know the truth. What is definite is a future relationship between the Mets and agent Scott Boras seems to be in total jepordy.

I immediately place Rocker back on my list as the top RHP.

2021 Vanderbilt stats - 20-staters, 14-4, 2.73, 122-IP, 179-K, 39-BB

When the Mets landed right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker, the Vanderbilt superstar, with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 draft, there was a feeling it could be a steal. Instead, the Mets are going to be going without a first-rounder in their system from this year's draft. Due to concerns with Rocker's right elbow and apparently fruitless negotiations on a reduced signing bonus, the two sides were unable to come to a deal before Sunday's 5 p.m. ET signing deadline.

Mets general manager Zack Scott released a statement Sunday right after the deadline: "This is clearly not the outcome we had hoped for and wish Kumar nothing but success moving forward," he said.

Scott Boras, Rocker's agent, also released a statement. Boras said his client "is healthy according to independent medical review by multiple prominent baseball orthopedic surgeons." Boras added that Rocker does not require medical attention and "will continue to pitch in the regular course as he prepares to begin his professional career."

8-1-21 - Jeff Passan @JeffPassan

The New York Mets and Kumar Rocker, their first-round pick, did not come to an agreement on a deal. The Mets will get the 11th pick in the 2022 draft as compensation. Rocker will forgo returning to Vanderbilt and begin his pro career. He is now draft-eligible for 2022.

8-1-21 - Jon Heyman @JonHeyman

The expectation is Rocker will not return to Vandy and will instead work out on his own in anticipation of the 2022 draft. That would mirror the track of Luke Hochevar who was picked 40th in the 2005 draft, didn’t sign and spent the year working out. He was picked No. 1 in ‘06.

I believe both. Boras clearly states that Rocker can pitch right now according to independent prominent baseball orthopedic surgeons, and that Rocker’s tests show not much more damage to his elbow than when he was entering college.

Yes, he can pitch right now, but for how long? That’s where the Mets got spooked. I would have signed him. We make fun of the Wilpons, but this was a “Coupon move” by the Mets. You further trade away PCA for Baez and a throw-in and it’s obvious that this administration is too tight to take a risk and has traded away several prospects without having the chance to formulate an opinion on them.
