Press Release:

Yamamoto pitches two perfect innings in rehab start

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 24, 2021) – The St. Lucie Mets returned to Clover Park after two weeks on the road and snapped a three-game losing skid by beating the Daytona Tortugas 5-3 on Tuesday (Box Score).

New York Mets pitcher Jordan Yamamoto (shoulder) made a rehab start and pitched 2.0 perfect innings with one strikeout. He threw 20 pitches.

The Mets built a 2-0 lead before handing the ball over to Robert Colina in the third inning. Jack-Thomas Wold hit a RBI single and JT Schwartz scored from third base on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.

The Tortugas got a run on a sac fly in the third and tied the game 2-2 on a long leadoff home run by Debby Santana in the fifth.

Omar De Los Santos broke the tie and gave the Mets the lead for good with a RBI single that plated Justin Guerrera in the sixth inning.

Schwartz drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh to force home Rowdey Jordan, who started the inning with a double.

Juan Uriarte led off the eighth with a double and later scored on a RBI ground out by Alex Ramirez for a key insurance run.

Daytona's Brandon Leyton started the top of the ninth with a home run, but Mets closer Luis Montas was able to pitch around that and a couple of singles to lock down his sixth save.

Colina (2-0) was credited with the win. He pitched 4.2 innings behind Yamamoto and limited the Tortugas to two runs (one earned) in 4.2 innings.

Liam McCall relieved Colina with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh and retired Jose Torres on a popup to keep the Mets in the lead, 3-2.

The Mets pounded out 11 hits. Uriarte went 3 for 4. Schwartz and De Los Santos had two hits apiece.

Guerra, who made his team debut, went 0 for 1 with three walks and two runs scored.

The Mets (50-44) and Tortugas (47-50) play the second game of their series at Clover Park on Wednesday at 12:10 p.m.
