Mack's spin -
Another of the very talented shortstops in this draft.
As you will read below, a lot of the experts have him coming off the board as the #1 SS.I don't. He needs to work on his BA by cutting down on his strikeouts.
Projected to stock on short, though power like this usually winds up on either third or as a corner oitfielder.
Right now, he's my 5th SS.

7. Miami Marlins: Carter Young, SS, Vanderbilt
Young is a 6-foot, 180-pound shortstop who has all the tools to stick at shortstop long-term. He is an advanced defensive player with arm strength and the athleticism, footwork, and hands to make all the necessary plays.
The switch hitter displayed an ability to drive the ball with power this season. He hit 16 home runs in 61 games. Young needs to refine his approach and plate discipline, as he racked up 81 strikeouts while drawing 31 walks.

4. Carter Young
Shortstop, Vanderbilt
Bit of a do-it-all player in his prep days, Young has played catcher and middle infield over the course of his young career. Young started every game at shortstop for Vandy where he'd hit .328 in a shortened season in 2020. Young is revered for his actions on the dirt where he's comfortably an above average defender, though most believe his athleticism and twitch suggest a plus defender at the next level. The throwing arm also comfortably grades out above average, aided by his experience behind the plate as a prep. A switch-hitter, he’s beginning to tap into some power at the plate, especially from left side. Young was a little banged up toward the latter half of the 2021 season. Fully healthy again in 2022, he figures to be one of the more complete hitters in the SEC.

Carter Young, SS, Vanderbilt University (Tenn.)
The Detroit Tigers are still in the market for the shortstop of the future. The debate is going to rage on about who will be that anchor of the team’s future. The Tigers may not have that position filled out entirely when the 2022 draft rolls around.
That being said, Carter Young from Vanderbilt University could very well be the first-round shortstop that the Tigers are looking for. Young has spent the last two seasons with the Vandy Boys and is fine-tuning his skills quite well.

Carter Young, SS, Vanderbilt
As of right now, he’s the best shortstop in this class. Carter Young took over shortstop after Austin Martin was drafted a year ago. He can do a little bit of everything. He reminds me of a Trea Truner/Dansby Swanson type of guy. He’s taken a backseat this past season due to the star power of Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker, but now it’s his time to shine.

Texas Rangers’ 2022 Draft Prospects: SS Carter Young
There are some pundits who believe had Vandy’s Carter Young been eligible for the 2021 MLB Draft, he would’ve been the first shortstop off the board. In a class that had Marcelo Mayer, Kahlil Watson and Jordan Lawlar in it, that’s awfully high praise.
He’s projected as a plus defender at shortstop with a good arm. With the bat, Young can hit switch, a huge asset to his game, and does well from both sides of the plate.
Young is also compared to former Vandy product and current Brave Dansby Swanson, who has turned into a productive regular for Atlanta. That’s about all you could ever hope for out of a draftee.
With the Rangers linked to shortstops in 2021, it’s likely they’ll explore the idea of drafting one in 2022. If Carter Young is there when they pick, he’ll surely be in consideration.

2. Baltimore Orioles
Carter Young, SS, Vanderbilt
Bit of a do-it-all player in his prep days, Young has played catcher and middle infield over the course of his young career. The Selah, Washington product has cemented himself up the middle, starting every game at shortstop for the Commodores the past two seasons. Young is revered for his actions on the dirt where some project a plus glove with a plus arm. Young began tapping into more power in 2021, especially from the left side of the plate. Some nagging injuries slowed his offensive production toward the tail-end of his sophomore campaign, but some scouts believe this is a future top-of-the-lineup stick at the big league level with the potential for an above average hit tool and fringe-average pop. Young might follow in Dansby Swanson’s footsteps as the next great shortstop to be drafted very high out of Nashville.

76. Carter Young - SS
Bio:
Height: 6-1
Weight: 177 lbs
Hits/Throws: B-R
Hometown: Selah, Washington
School: Vanderbilt

Started every game at shortstop for Vandy where he'd hit .328 in a shortened season in 2020. Young is revered for his actions on the dirt where he's an easy 55 defender. He doesn't possess a ton of punch at the plate right now, but is a good bet to deliver a professional at-bat and put the ball in play.
