Tom Brennan - WHAT WOULD YOU CALL A METS MINORS PITCHER WHO DOES THIS?

Mets have plowed through pitchers with incredible rapidity this year.

Three dozen so far, give or take a few.

The Mets could use another couple of dozen hurlers at this rate in 2021.

Who else on the farm might provide the Mets with some real help, and soon?

If some pitcher threw a no hitter and fanned 17, but was otherwise mediocre, would he be the call up I'd recommend?

Not a chance.

If however the pitcher had amongst his 2021 starts the following 9 outings in the first 3 months of this minor league season, what then should be his "get-called-up-to-Queens" potential?

5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K

5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K

6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K

7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K

6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

6 IP, 2 H, 0 R. 1 BB, 5 K

5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K

7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K

These 9 starts in the aggregate?  55 IP, 16 H, 3 R, 12 BB, 51 Ks

Pretty other-worldly.

His near term potential to me now seems to be great.

I'd call him an on-the-precipice major leaguer, just waiting for that phone call.

Of course, a different level of hitters exist everywhere but Queens in the majors, to be sure, but you don't have nine starts like that in 3 months without really having something to succeed against hitters.

His name?

JOSH WALKER

A 6'6" lefty.

Amazingly, a 37th round selection by the Mets in 2017 at the ripe age of 22.

He was lousy, briefly, in rookie ball in 2017.

He threw just 47 innings in 2018 and 2019.

Like most of the baseball world, he threw zero innings in 2020.

GOOD GRIEF.

This year, in 3 months, though?  86 IP already.

Won almost all his decisions this year, too.

Me?

I like winning.

Me?

I'd give him a shot ASAP.

After all, what have you got to lose?  A pennant, perhaps?

Two other higher minors guys showing they too want to ascend:

32nd rounder in 2019 Cole Gordon:

"Gordon is coming off a terrific start on Friday against Portland, allowing one hit over a career-high seven scoreless frames with no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts. Over his last two starts (in 12 innings) Gordon has allowed only one hit, one walk, and struck out 18." AA pitcher of the week.

Jose Butto:

Last 2 AA starts, 12 innings, 6 hits, no runs, 12 Ks

Wow Tom your not "Joshing" about Walker lets call him up. I just wonder what the conversation will be after 13 games with the big boys because unfortunately I'm seeing 3 and 10 oh boy.

Mack, I will not sue for theft of homework! A little credit would be nice, though, from the Twits.

Gary, that is a remarkable collection of extremely well pitched games, isn’t it? Deserves attention.

He could be here sooner than later, depending on Jake's and Thor's ETAs. I imagine he will get a start in the next 2-3 days, and I'm looking forward to it.

On another note, Mark Vientos hasn't played since a week ago, when he was taken out of the game after hitting into a 1st inning DP. I can't find any info on his injury or ETA. Do you have any?

Bill, these days, when you hear nothing, it usually means COVID. Hopefully not, but if yes, hopefully very mild.

We need good arms. I am skeptical on minor league arms, but to put together SO MANY quality starts this year, Walker has to be an up-and-comer. Perhaps this season. Plenty of season left. And when a team has already used 3 dozen pitchers, it is irrational to think they won't need any more.

I've thought of COVID, but that usually gets mentioned. What's strange (and doesn't sound like COVID) is that he started the game, hit into the DP in the 1st, then was removed. So it seemed more like a leg injury.

I always thought Walker was a doomed name for a pitcher but others with the moniker have succeeded. The Mets need to assess their options because the cupboards are mighty bare in 2022.

Looks like things are trending up for having a lot more SP depth from the system next year.

DiComo all but confirmed Vientos has some Covid issue with his absence due to "health and safety protocols" Tweet.

I am curious that other teams didn't really value some of our "B" prospects that we supposedly don't have. Walker & Butto I would assume be in this level? Or perhaps they did and the Mets considered them A chips based on their performances in the upper minors.

Reese, good one and true statement

Dallas, these guys have to prove more that they are As. Megill I felt sure was an A. He pitches for a team that is a C.
