OPEN THREAD - Who Do You Start Or Trade For On:. 1B

This will be a fun series of threads

1B

Sounds easy, but what do you do if there is a DH next year (which there will be)... or if some team offers you 2 starting players for Pete... or if Freddy's agent calls you?

Just saying.

I think the combo of Pete and Dom in 2020 worked well with the DH. But I think Pete wants to play the field badly. If so, Dom gets traded and Cano DH along with perhaps JDD.

The good part about when Vientos arrives, you get a half way decent backup first baseman.

Ditto! But #1 need get another hitter to pair with Big Pete.

Pete is a good contributor, but not a great player yet. While I am ready to trade him for a good package based on his position and options to fill it, these are the facts:
- He has cut his K rate to under 20% by cutting it two years in a row.
- His Hard Hit rate of 47% screams of a higher average and he isn’t slow, per se.
- He has gone the other way more and pull slightly less every year so far.
- His lifetime OPS is .890. That’s pretty good.

I really can’t expect Smith to have better numbers than this, so I’m dealing Smith unless someone really floors me with a package for Alonso. I was dying to get rid of this guy just to get some fresh meat on this team, but after seeing the numbers, I have to give Alonso his due. However, that .347 lifetime OBP cannot be batting above fifth.

Problem with dealing Smith is that Chili Davis happened to be the coach that got through to him to a .937 OPS the two years he was here. That’s hard to ignore, but can you expect that again? I think he can be closer to that than his .6 something the other three years but first basemen need to be in the .8’s. Now Dom has improved in LF, but that’s a credit to him, that doesn’t make him an adequate LFer.

Dealing Smith is the ultimate "sell low" proposition. If someone solved two problems for the Mets and the price was Pete Alonso I would at least listen to the offer.

Reese, I really like both the thought and the way you phrased the last comment. A #2 pitcher and a good outfielder should be the minimum bait

Who's On First?

Big Pete Alonso. His play on first has improved. He loves playing there. To the Mets team, he is the field leader...And a team does not want to upset the new Babe Ruth.

The Mets hitting should not have been a problem in 2021's second half. It was the pitching injuries. The real reason the batting had been a problem, was because it looked like when Jake went down certain Mets players were not as (let's say) ambitious anymore. If true, then to me it signifies a problem with those players. A big problem.

I noticed too in 2021's last ten days or so, that certain "contract up players" like 4 year veterans turned up their drive and began to hit like they had done earlier on first half and 2020. I did not appreciate that either as a longtime fan.

This is precisely why I say "trade or do not re-sign" those players for 2022. They have shown now, who they really are and it was not acceptable by us fans and it should not be acceptable to the Mets brass either.

There comes a time in every sports team where changes have to be made to get better. To me, this is one of those times right now for this it to happen this one off season. Die-hard fans of certain players will not see this, they will disagree. But unfortunately it is so very true.

A team does not want a repeat performance of the Mets second half ever again. It failed the litmus test of baseball.

I too really believe that Mark Vientos will be a very special player for this Mets organization. He can play 3B, LF, and first base. Even be a DH, although I think that his skills defensively will not require that to happen with him.

Vientos, Alvarez, Mauricio, Baty video on youtube worth looking at if any fan unfamiliar with these guys. You won't be for long.
