Syracuse Mets Game Notes - 4-26-23

Game One: RHP Alex Valverde (1-1, 5.14) vs. RHP Reese Olson (0-2, 15.83)

Robot Umpires: The Automated Ball-Strike (“ABS”) system makes its season debut tonight. Full ABS will be used in the first three games of each series (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), and ABS Challenge will be used in the remaining three games (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). In Full ABS games, the ABS system will be the exclusive mechanism of calling balls and strikes. The ABS strike zone will be a rectangle with a width of 17 inches (the width of home plate) set at the middle of the plate. The top and bottom of the strike zone will be set at 51% and 27% of the batter’s height, respectively. 

Birthday Month?: Syracuse shortstop Ronny Mauricio turned 22 years old Tuesday, April 4th. Since then, Mauricio is hitting .364 (24- for-66) with six doubles, a triple, six home runs, and 13 RBIs. Mauricio is tied for eighth in the International League with his six homers, ranks tenth with a .350 batting average, second with 28 hits, tied for second with 14 extra-base hits, and is first with 55 total bases. 

Hit Collector: Mark Vientos has multiple hits in five of his last seven games. During his last seven games, Vientos is hitting .545 (12-for22) with eight RBIs, two home runs, four doubles, five walks, and four strikeouts. Vientos ranks fifth in the International League with a .368 batting average and ranks second with a 1.163 on-base plus slugging percentage. 

Streaking: After starting the season 1-for-22, Michael Perez has hits in five straight games. During this stretch, Perez is hitting .375 (6-for16) with five RBIs and two home runs. 

Steady Bat: Jonathan Araúz had his seven-game hitting streak come to an end during Thursday’s doubleheader and is now hitless over his last five games. The 24-year-old is hitless in his last 16 atbats. Arauz was hitting .368 with 12 RBIs, five doubles, a home run, and seven walks in his first 15 games this season. 

League Leaderboard: Syracuse is second in the International League with a .281 batting average. The Mets ranks sixth with a .359 on-base percentage, and Syracuse rank third with a .485 slugging percentage. The Mets’ 32 home runs rank fifth in the league. 

Heating Up: Lorenzo Cedrola started the season 2-for-19 in his first five games but is 15-for-35 (.429) in his last 11 games with eight RBIs, three home runs, three doubles, and four walks. Cedrola has hits in ten of his last 11 games. 

Power From the ‘Pen: Grant Hartwig and Zach Muckenhirn have been two of the best relievers in the International League so far this season. Hartwig, a right-handed reliever from Metro Detroit, has allowed just one earned run in 9.0 innings so far this season with 11 strikeouts. Muckenhirn, a left-handed reliever who pitched in college at North Dakota, has allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings this season. Combined, the pair has allowed just two earned runs in 17.2 innings with 14 strikeouts.
