Clay Holmes fired off another great Spring start as he struck out 8 in 5.1 IP today.
He generated 15 whiffs with his changeup leading the way with a gaudy 71.4
Whiff%
Holmes
has all the tools to be an ace!
If anyone
doubted that Clay Holmes deserves to start
Opening Day, he silenced those critics today!
Holmes
showcased his full arsenal, with five pitches that graded above average. It was
too much for the Cardinals to handle as he struck out eight in 5.1 scoreless
innings!

Boy, is this the steal of the century, or what?
The Yankee brass must get physically ill every time they read the results of one of Clay's spring outings.
Is he developing into an ace? Well, he sure as hell no longer projects as a back-end starter.
My hat tips very low to the genius that decided to stretch Holmes out this season. Everything changed here for the future of this rotation.
First, there is no reason to consider betting the farm for a starter like Dylan Cease. Secondly, and this is the most important, pitchers like Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas do not have to rush back, while Brandon Sproat is given the right amount of time to pitch past the blizzard delays.
So I ask...
What are your thoughts, going forward, on this guy?

Starting to feel good about the season.
My questions are - How will he be pitching come August and September? How will the additional workload affect him? Are / should the Mets doing a six-man rotation?
Don't really care about August and September
Will have Manaea back and Sproat ready
I just want Holmes to get this team to giddy-up
Steve’s questions, plus one more: is this a product of the lineup?
Tex
Don't understand what you are asking...
I have the same concern as Steve. With a fresh arm in the spring, Holmes is looking great. In the late season, the wear of many more pitches may show. He is their best starting pitcher today, but will have to maintain this dominance throughout the year to be an "ace" in my book. Senga, where is your competitive drive? Are you going to let this guy take your title?
Paul
I just want this guy to get us to first place at the all-star break.
If he falters then, there looks to be planty of other starters that could fill his slot
Pitching depth i love that term and once again tip of the cap to Mr. Sterns. I know its early and yes we have no idea if he'll be standing in September but Lugo did it when he went from 65 innings with us in 22' to 146 with the SD to 206 with KC at 33 and 34 so why the hell not right!
Like Lugo, Holmes may not be fully stretched out until next season
Luckily, the Mets have him under contract through 2027
I am pretty sure Holmes is not an "Ace", but it feels like the Mets have developed a corral of pitchers that has plenty of depth and will pitch competently enough to win many games.
I do agree that the talk of Castillo and that guy from San Diego should Cease. While Alcantara would be nice in that rotation, it is not a real need at this point.
Don't really care about aces
Give me 5 kings with ERAs under 4
I agree with Mack. I am very glad they did not sign Fried or Burnes for the kind of money they got. The Mets staff will do just fine as a whole unit.
There’s no place like Holmes
