B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:



Hits weren’t hard to come by for either team last
night, as the B-Mets outhit Erie, but fell 10-5 in the runs column
Thursday night. All but two of Binghamton’s 15 hits were
singles compared with 10 extra-base hits for the SeaWolves of
their 14 knocks. Dylan Owen had not allowed an earned run in
21.2 innings entering Thursday’s game, but that streak came
to an end abruptly in the first inning as Erie struck for three
runs on a two-run triple from Casper Wells and an RBI double
from Andy Dirks. The 3-0 lead shrunk in the bottom of the first
as the five straight B-Mets’ hitters reached with on out against
Jon Kibler bringing home two runs. However, 3-2 was as close
as Binghamton would get. Erie scored runs in each of the first
seven innings, including three solo homers off Owen, who
allowed a season-high of eight runs in five innings. Josh Petersen
starred with his third straight three-hit showing as he went
3-4 with a walk. Lucas Duda also managed three hits, including
a double, to extend his Eastern League-best hitting streak
to 14 games. Brendan Wise picked up the win in relief of
Kibler, who went just three innings. Wise threw the middle
three innings scoreless for his third win.


STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:



LHP Eric Niesen will make his
seventh start of the season tonight for Binghamton. He lasted
just four innings in his last outing, July 10 at New Britain.
Niesen allowed four runs on six hits and walked three men in
a no-decision against the Rock Cats. For the year with Binghamton,
he is 0-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 26.2 innings. He has
struck out 30 men during that span, but has walked 17 batters.
He opened 2009 with St. Lucie (High-A) and was 3-4 with
a 3.28 ERA in 57.2 innings. Last season, Niesen appeared in
26 games for St. Lucie, including 24 starts, and totaled a 6-12
record with a 4.64 ERA in 118.1 innings. He was the Mets’
third-round choice in 2007 out of Wake Forest.


RHP Pat Stanley will make his 10th start for the SeaWolves
tonight. The righty has won three straight starts and his last
four decisions. He allowed just one unearned run over seven
innings in his last stat July 10 against Akron to pick up the
win. He is 4-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 53 innings. Originally selected
in the 16th round of the 2004 draft by Colorado,
Stanley had spent the previous three season in independent
ball before being signed by the Tigers in October 2008. He led
the Atlantic League in strikeouts for Newark last season with
151 in 139.2 innings with the Bears.


PETERSEN PACES OFFENSE:



With a 3-4 day Thursday, Josh
Petersen recorded his third straight three-hit day and his
fourth consecutive multi-hit performance. He is batting .469
(15-32) over eight games in July and has hits in 15 of his last
17 games with a .431 (28-65) average.
