Jeurys Familia:
Familia has had a tough time this season and some have speculated that he might be returning to Savannah to get his game together; however, he put together a good outing Monday night, with stats of: 6.2-IP, 1-ER, 7-K, 3-BB. His yearly ERA is now 6.16 and this was especially a heart breaker, since it was a 7-inng game. Jeurys was one out away from a complete game victory, but was relieved and the game was lost eventually to Bradenton. Bad game, but good outing.
Carlos Vazquez:
The GCL Mets opened their season on Monday night and beat the GCL Marlins. One of the 2009 relief specialist, Carlos Vasquez (2009 DSL Mets: 5-0, 1.85, in 17 games, 4 starts), got the opening night start and did just fine: 5.2-IP, 2-ER, 5-K, 1-BB, .318. The 18-year old Vasquez is a little bit of a surprise to come stateside this year, but as long as he pitches like this, he’s surely welcomed to stay. Other stars of the first game were SS Randolf Santana (2-3, RBI) and 2009’s 25th round draft pick, 3B Josh Dunn (2-4).
Matt den Dekker:
The Mets selected Gator center fielder Matt den Dekker in the fifth round. A lefty with plus speed and some power potential, den Dekker has always intrigued scouts. But the production has always been a little short. As a senior, den Dekker should be one of the easiest players to sign in the draft who still has some upside. - link
Jay Payton:
It has been 10 years since Jay Payton broke into the majors on a permanent basis with the New York Mets and five seasons since he played his last game with a National League team. Further, it has been a full season since Payton last played with any Major League team in the regular season. Incredulously, not only is Payton likely on his way back into the show at some point this season, but he may have value heading into the trade deadline. The 37-year-old has spent this season with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox along with other former major leaguers, like Brad Eldred, Nick Bierbrodt, Jimmy Gobble, and Damian Moss. Payton is actually second on the team in plate appearances, and is hitting .323/.371/.467 with three homers. He’s never been an overly impressive player, with his best season by WAR standards being a 3.7 win 2002, backed by stellar defense - link
K-Port Preview:
Development remains the primary objective of the coaching staffs in the Appalachian League. Staying competitive on the field is an arms race. Quality pitching, specifically pitching depth, is the key to fielding a winning team in the rookie level of the minor leagues. The opening-day roster for the Kingsport Mets includes seven of the 29 pitchers drafted by the Mets organization earlier this month. Of those seven, five went in the first 12 rounds. – link
