Mets Claim RHP Jeremy Hefner off Waivers,
Sign LHP Garrett Olson, C Lucas May to Minor League Deals
December 13, 2011 -The New York Mets announced Monday that they have claimed RHP JEREMY HEFNER off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets also announced the club has signed LHP GARRETT OLSON and C LUCAS MAY to minor league contracts and invited both to major league Spring Training.
Hefner, 25, was claimed by the Pirates from the San Diego Padres on November 18 after spending spent last season with Triple-A Tucson of the Pacific Coast League. The 6-4, 215-pounder finished the year with a 9-7 record and a 4.98 ERA (157.1IP, 87ER) in 28 starts. The Perkins, OK native ranked among the PCL leaders in innings (tied for eighth, 157.1) and strikeouts (tied for sixth, 120).
In five minor league seasons, Hefner has compiled a 46-34 record with a 3.84ERA (688.2IP, 294ER) and 606 strikeouts. Hefner was originally drafted by the Mets in the 46th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft and again in the 48th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft but did not sign either time. He was selected and signed by the Padres in the fifth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
Olson, 28, spent last season in Pittsburgh’s organization, making the Pirates’ Opening Day roster. He appeared in four games out of the bullpen for the Pirates, going 1-1 with a 2.08ERA (4.1IP, 1ER). The 6-1, 210-pound native of Fresno, CA also played for Indianapolis, where he finished with a 4-3 record and a 3.05 ERA (85.2IP, 29ER) in 24 games, 15 starts.
Olson made his major league debut in 2007 with Baltimore, and recorded a career-high 26 starts for the Orioles in 2008. He also spent time with Seattle, appearing in 31 games, 11 starts, for the Mariners in 2009. For his career, the lefthander is 14-22 with a 6.14ERA (287.1IP, 196ER) in 103 games, 44 starts.
May, 27, split last season between Kansas City’s and Arizona’s Triple-A clubs, starting the year with Triple-A Omaha of the Pacific Coast League. The 5-11, 195-pound native of Las Vegas, NV was traded to Arizona on June 1 and played the rest of the season with Triple-A Reno of the Pacific Coast League. He combined to hit .238 (59-248) with 10 home runs and 44 RBI between the two stops. May made his major league debut in 2010 with the Royals, appearing in 12 games and hitting .189 (7-37) with six RBI.
