Mets Stuff

Mets Stuff  -

A scout on Kirk Nieuwenhuis:

"My concern about him is his ability to stay on the field," one scout said. "He’s been hurt a lot the last three years, and I have questions about his durability. I see him more as a platoon guy.”

The Mets call up CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis after one game in Buffalo. (boy, are the Bisons going to drop this team as a franchise come 2013)

According to our own Jeff Zimmerman, Hanson was down 2.3 MPH from last year, while Johan Santana was 1.9 MPH under his 2010 performance. Those are significant variances, and the readings can’t simply be chalked up to a miscalculated radar gun, because every other pitcher who appeared in that game showed velocity at or near their usual levels. Neither pitcher was able to dial it up past 90-91 regularly, with Santana down into the mid-80s by the end of his stint. link

R.A. Dickey:

"The Niese signing is a great indication that the Wilpons plan to make investments in the club."

Both the Houston Colt 45s and Mets are “sister” franchises, in that they were both part of National league expansion in 1962. Expanding from eight to 10 teams meant, for the first time, National League play would consist of 162 games. A year earlier, the junior circuit started playing 162 contests after the addition of two new teams, the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins. In celebration of their 50 years, the Mets and Astros will have special events scheduled for 2012. The Astros will have “Flashback Fridays” at Minute Maid Park, when former stars will throw out first pitches and current players will wear throwback jerseys from different eras in the history of the franchise. After a little bit of controversy regarding the pistols logo in their inaugural uniform, the original Colt 45s jerseys will be worn.  In addition, the funky ’70s orange and yellow jerseys will certainly be fan favorites, bringing back memories of Jose Cruz, Larry Dierker and Joaquin Andujar. link

Wally Backman on Kirk Nieuwenhuis:

"He plays the game the way Aaron Rowand played the game when he first came to the big leagues, That is the type of player he is. He plays the game that hard."

Jon Niese on whether he would send the $10,000 back to Carlos Beltran: "Yeah, right."

New clean-up hitter Friday for the Rays – Jeff Keppinger.

Matt den Dekker‏:

This may be a stupid question but is Cowboys and Aliens based on a true story?

Mr. Picky here. The Twins were new to MN, but a transfer not a new team. The (New) Senators (current Rangers) was the expansion team. Eli Grba was their Hobie Landrith, I think. :-)
