Nothing wrong with bringing back Johan for cheap, bringing back Dice-K for cheap, and signing Arroyo to a short term contract. If Harvey pitches, the Mets would have Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Arroyo, Santana with Thor or Montero waiting in the wings. It also allows the team to deal Dillon Gee.
If the Mets can't get Choo for a reasonable price, I want them to go after Cruz on a one year, possibly two year prove-it type deal, for maybe 5-6 million per. Then signing Stephen Drew would go a long way towards filling in some offensive holes. Trades would yield the best players but would also cost more than just more money on the cap, and would probably create more holes than it fills.
A while back I wrote an article stating that Johan owes the Mets. I didn't expect anything to come of it then, and I still don't now. I'm wary of Johan. He's pitched only 117 innings since 2010, and he will be 35 at the start of next season. Who is to say how his arm will hold up for another 2 or 3 years. All that notwithstanding, I'd love to see Sandy sign Johan to a low base, highly incentive laden 1 year deal with a 2nd year vesting option.
Seems like Mejia is the forgotten man, out of sight, out of mind. He can still be an effective part of the 2014 rotation, especially if Harvey is out for the year. Santana, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, Mejia.
Cruz would be a fine option for some outfield pop. My only hesitation is that he plays 1/2 his games in a hitter's paradise. But, then again, so does CarGo.
