Monday afternoon at Citi Field, Anthony Rizzo broke a 1 all tie in the top of
the 8th inning with this 28th homer, the Cubs go on to
beat the Mets 4-1. Carlos Torres got the emergency start for the Mets. Bartolo
Colon was scratched from his start so he could be with his ailing Mother.
Torres rose to the occasion and pitched 5 scoreless innings in the spot start.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead off the Cubs
when Lucas Duda connected off Kyle Hendricks for a solo homer in the bottom of
the 4th, his 22nd on the year. The Cubs tied the game in the 6th
when Luis Valbuena hit an RBI single scoring Rizzo off Dana Eveland. In the 8th Rizzo hit a solo shot
off Buddy Carlyle to gain the lead. In the top of the ninth, Rookie Javier Baez
hit a long 2 run homer (5) off Jenrry
Mejia to put the game out of reach. The
Mets only amassed 4 hits once again and become the first team in 10 years to go
5 straight games with 4 hits or less (The last team to do that was the 1994
Mets) Daniel Murphy had a ninth inning double, Matt den Dekker and Curtis
Granderson got the other hits. Torres
went 5 allowing just 3 hits walking 2 and striking out 6. Carlyle takes the
loss falling to 1-1. Hendricks improves
to 5-1 with the win and Hector Rondon notched his 18th save in the 9th. The Mets split the four game series with the
Cubs. They fall to 30-32 at home on the season and 59-67 overall. Tuesday night the Mets are back in action in
Oakland as they start a 2 game set with the A’s. Dillon Gee (4-5
3.69) goes for the Mets. Scott Kazmir (13-5 2.78) goes for the A’s.
