St. Lucie 6 - Charlotte 2
The St. Lucie Mets avoided a sweep by rallying past the Charlotte Stone Crabs 6-2 on Wednesday at Charlotte Sport Park.
The Mets scored five runs in the seventh inning to erased a 2-1 deficit. Gilbert Gomez scored from third to tie the game on catcher Luke Bailey’s passed ball. Maikis De La Cruz then laced a two-run double off of Zach Cooper to score Jeff McNeil and Gavin Cecchini to put the Mets up 4-2.
L.J. Mazzilli tripled to plate De La Cruz, and Phil Evans collected his third single of the game to bring in Mazzilli and complete the scoring, 6-2.
Mets starter Matt Koch pitched one of his best games of the season. He tossed seven innings - his second longest outing of the season - and gave up six hits and two runs. Koch did not walk a batter and tied his season high of six strike outs.
The only runs the Crabs scored came on Tyler Goeddel’s two-run homer with no one out in the second inning.
After Goeddel singled in the fourth, Koch retired 12 of the next 13 batters, including the last seven in a row, to finish his night.
The Mets jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first but that didn’t last long, as Goeddel’s two-run shot made it 2-1 Crabs in the second.
That score held until the Mets hammered Jordan Harrison and Cooper for five runs in the seventh.
Paul Sewald got the final six outs to close out the game in a non-save situation. Sewald struck out four of the last five batters in the game.
Crabs starter Austin Pruitt only gave up one run and five hits while striking out six in five innings, but he needed 98 pitches to do so and didn’t come out in the sixth.
Mazzilli went 2 for 4 and extended his hitting streak to seven games. He’s now 14 for 29 in his last seven.
Evans went 3 for 4 with an RBI. - team press release
