BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets used a pinch-hit RBI double from Jayce Boyd in the bottom of the ninth inning to top the Richmond Flying Squirrels and complete the three-game sweep of the Eastern League Championship Series. It’s the team’s third Eastern League Championship and the first since 1994.
Xorge Carrillo started the ninth with a one-out single off Steven Okert. Wilfredo Tovar moved the catcher to second with a base knock. Gavin Cecchini pinch-ran for Carrillo at second base. Jayce Boyd came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and smacked a double to right-center field to give the B-Mets the title.
The scoring started in the fourth. Travis Taijeron singled against Ty Blach and moved to third on a one-out single from Brandon Nimmo. Carrillo skied an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to plate Taijeron for the first run of the game.
Steven Matz carried a no-hitter into the eighth for the B-Mets. He surrendered back-to-back one-out hits in the eighth and was pulled in favor of Hansel Robles. Daniel Carbonell tallied a two-out single to score a runner and tie the game at one.
Matz (1-0) tossed 7-1/3 innings, allowed one run and struck out 11. Robles and Satterwhite each tossed a scoreless inning to keep the score tied. The pair combined to toss 11.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the postseason.
POSTGAME NOTES: Carrillo was named MVP of the postseason…The team won the final five games of the playoffs...It’s the second series sweep for the team since moving to Binghamton in 1992…The 89 wins between the regular season and playoffs is a franchise record.
