Mets Minor League Player of the Day: Binghamton RHSP Greg Peavey.
Binghamton (2-0) blasts Richmond (0-2) 5-1 to take a 2 game lead in the series.
A couple of long balls were more than enough when you get shut down pitching like the B-Mets got tonight.
Greg Peavey (W; 1-1) was masterful: 7.0 IP, R, 5 H, 0 BB, 9 K.
Randy Fontanez: 1.0 IP, 0 R, H, 0 BB, K.
Cody Satterwhite pitched a perfect 9th with 2 K‘s: (Satterwhite, 27, is older than his peers, and perhaps that is why he has been dominant since the Mets signed him 2 years ago. Drafted in the 2nd round by Detroit in 2008, he was no more than average during his years in the Tigers’ organization. The Tigers finally gave up on him after he missed his 2nd minor league season, (2010 & 2012) Alderson signed him in 2013, and the rest is history.
Virtually all the Mets offense was supplied byy two players
Travis Taijeron: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI, R. (Taijeron also had an outfield assist, doubling off a runner who had wandered too far when Taijeron snagged a fly ball.)
Xorge Carrrillo: 2-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, R.
Travis Taijeron has always shown power, with 66 HR in 1332 minor league career AB. In his 1st pro season in Brooklyn, he hit 9 HR and 5 triples, good for a .943 OPS. Since then, the power stayed, but he didn’t hit much for average. (.265 MiLB career avg.) That has resulted in Taijeron being discounted as much of a prospect. However, Taijeron has always been able to get on base, a trait greatly valued by Mets brass. His career OBP is .363, and coupled with a career SLG of .505, his career OPS is .868. Is that enough to earn a shot at a corner OF spot in Spring Training 2015?

Hey Herb, with Travis it is not just the homers, he is a doubles machine. They have to get him to Vegas in 2015, and hopefully he continues to tweak his average and cut down his Ks...because he is a producer of more than an extra base hit in every 7.5 official at bats in his career. A terrific rate.
Maybe Xorge Carillo as trade bait. Might be a good offensive back up catcher for some team.
Does Peavey have Gee potential? Anyone have a feeling on that? If so, at least another minor trade chip?
Thomas, I've liked Taijeron since seeing him in Brooklyn is '11. (I only wish his parentss had named him Tyrone.) He has gap to gap power, and although he is no Lagares, he has an adequate glove foe a corner position. IMO, he should have been in Vegas this year, but they already had a stacked outfield.
Re: Peavey vs. Gee, I don't think Peavey measures up. He does not have Gee potential. He could eventually wind up in some teams pen, but not the Mets, since we have a plethora of outstanding arms banging at the gates.
Carrillo could be a throwe in as a trade chip, unless Sandy sees fit to trade Plawecki, although even then Centeno would be ahead of him as a back-up. Also, since he doesntt have Recker power, I think they would go with Racker over him. He has blossomed in Binghamton the past two years, so he could be attractive to a team looking for a back up C.
