4-9-15 - Minor League Recap

Thursday, April 9, 2014 - Opening Day

Mets minor league player of the day  - Savannah's Luis Guillorme (1 for 1 and 4 BB, now leading all of minor league ball in on base percentage through game 1 at 1.00)

Honorable Mention  -  Amed Rosario and Jhoan Urena, each starting out 3 for 5 in their St Lucie debuts.

AAA - Fresno (1-0) 2 -  Las Vegas 51's 1

    Steven Matz - 5-1-IP, 1-R, 3-H, 4-K, 3-BB, 1.69

    Matt Reynolds - 0-3, 2-K, 1-BB

    Dilson Herrera - 0-4

    Kevin Plawecki - 0-4

    Johnny Monell - 1-3

   Eric Campbell - 1-3, 1-BB, 1-R

Steve Matz allowed just one run in the 6th, surrendered by reliever Zach Thornton.  Loss goes to John Church (0-1), who put 2 on in 8th, with one of those inherited runners allowed to score by Chase Bradford.

No hits for the 51s until the 7th, and 2 in all, for a quiet offensive night.

AA - Akron (1-0) 14 - Binghamton Mets (0-1) 5

    Matt Koch - 4.2-IP, 3-ER, 2-K, 0-BB, 7-H, 5.79

    Dustin Lawley - 2-4, 1-R, 1-HR (1), 1-RBI, .500

    Xorge Carillo -  2-3, 1-R, .667

    T.J. Rivera -  2-5, 1-R, 2-RBI, .400

Binghamton scored 4 in the top of the 5th to grab a 4-1 lead.  The B Met bullpen surrendered 11 runs.  3 B Met errors.  Not a pretty night.  Brandon Nimmo hitless in 4 ABs, with 2 punch outs.

A+ - St. Lucie Mets (1-0) 7 - Bradenton (0-1) 2

    Robert Gsellman -   5.1-IP, 1-ER, 2-K, 1-BB, 7-H, 1.69

    Robert Coles - 2.0-IP, 0-ER, 1-K, 2-H, 0.00

    Champ Stuart - 2-4, 1-R, 1-HR (1), 2-RBI, .500

    Amed Rosario - 3-5, 2-R, 1-double, 1-RBI, .600

    Jhoan Urena - 3-5, 2-R, 1-triple, 2-RBI, .600

A hitting party for the young, exciting St Lucie Mets, who pounded out 18 hits in their opener.  Nice A+ debut by starter Robert Gsellman.

A - West Virginia (1-0) 7 - Savannah Sand Gnats (0-1) 6

    Corey Oswalt - 5.2-IP, 2-ER, 10-H, 4-K, 0-BB, 3.18

    Cameron Griffin - 1.1-IP, 0-R, 0-H, 3-K, 0-BB, 0.00

    Wuilmer Becerra - 1-5, 1-R, 1-HR (1), 3-RBI, .200

    Luis Guillorme - 1-1, 4.BB, 1.000-OBP,  1.000

A competitive opener for the Gnats, but ultimately a close loss on an unearned late run off Shane Bay.  Jimmy Duff ineffective (3 runs in .2 innings in his Gnat debut after a fine 2014 in K-port). Vicente Lupo's jump from the K Mets also tough (0-5, 3-Ks). But 5 times on base for slick SS Luis Guillorme is quite impressive.

Underperformer du Jour - Domingo Tapia, B Mets, who allowed 5 runs in just .2 innings.  His teammate Adam Kolarek was runner-up, striking out the side but allowing 4 runs in one inning of work.

Luis Guillorme in my opinion is poised to have a big season, hitting, fielding, and on base, although power is likely not a strength in his game. Perhaps a Rey Ordonez type with a potentially better stick.

Were it not for Amed, Luis might have gotten the slot in St Lucie at SS along with Yeixon Ruiz. Anxious to see what he does in 2015 playing every day in a full season league.

Overall, seems to me that AA is a light in talent, while AAA and A+ give us reasons to be optimistic.

I had Fulmer on my radar several years ago, he got hurt, disappeared, but I'm hopeful he'll make an impression this season. I like guys with big league fastballs. On the other side of the coin, I saw John Gant pitch and was totally underwhelmed -- yet the Mets jumped him from A to AA, skipping St. Lucie. Who knows!

James, I think Vegas is a team to watch and St Lucie too. Vegas has wonderful starters and top hitting prospects in Plawecki, Reynolds, Herrera and possibly Muno.

St Lucie has a bunch of great young hitters and Marcos Molina.

I think AA and the Gnats should be interesting, above .500 teams, but Lucie and Vegas are the ones I am intrigued with.

Kolarek fell from grace last year, in terms of pitching effectiveness, and Tapia has been an ongoing disappointment. I'll believe in either if/when they show something.

Fulmer needs to get off the Mazzoni Railroad of frustration and injuries and show us he's got the goods. Maybe Gant is the next Bowman.

In the Alumni Department, Allan Dykstra made the Rays and is 0-1, with a K and a walk. That is how I'd have expected Dykstra to start.

Mazzoni two nice innings in AAA. Verrett no outings yet for Rangers. and Dekker of course 0-1 vs. Mets this week.

Did I miss something?

Was there a particular reason Thor wasn't scheduled to pitch the first three games?

@mack

Interestingly enough Syndergaard is not scheduled for a start at all yet.

April 13th's spot is still TBD but something tells me, Alderson has Thor on standby in case something crazy happens (trade, injury) before the Mets get back to NY.

Not a trade Chris in my opinion. We need Gee to really succeed to pump up his trade value. Move him out for Bullpen depth or a SS and slide Montero in his slot.
