LAST GAME: The B-Mets tossed their second two-hitter in three games, and 24th in franchise history, beating the Akron RubberDucks 6-2 Sunday at Canal Park. Luis Cessa got the win, facing the minimum through seven shutout innings. The righty allowed just one hit, induced an ensuing double play, and struck out eight, his most since June 12, 2014. Beck Wheelerpitched the final two innings to earn his first career save at the Double-A level. Brandon Nimmo broke an 0-for-14 stretch to open the season by hitting his first home run of the year.T.J. Rivera had two hits, Gilbert Gomez had two extra base hits and Gavin Cecchini drove in two runs. The B-Mets took three out four from Akron to open the season.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP John Gant makes his Binghamton debut after spending last season with the Savannah Sand Gnats (High-A). The Savannah, Georgia native went 11-5 with a career-low 2.56 ERA in 21 starts. The 11 wins were more than his previous three seasons combined. The 22 year-old closed out the year 2-0 with a 1.24 ERA in his final five starts, holding opponents to a .155 batting average. The righty has pitched to a career 3.32 ERA in 50 appearances, 47 starts.
ERIE STARTER: RHP Warwick Saupold returns for his 2015 debut after spending the past two seasons with the SeaWolves. The Australian went 8-11 with a 5.01 ERA in 27 starts last season, tossing two complete games. He has faced Binghamton twice in his career, once at home, allowing one earned run in 13 total innings. The righty won one of his final seven starts last year and allowed opponents to hit .307 in the month of April. Saupold is attempting to become the 29th Australian born player to reach the MLB, 19 of which have been pitchers.
GOOD START(ERS): The B-Mets rotation has thrown 20.2 consecutive scoreless innings. On the year, the rotation has pitched to a 1.07 ERA with 18 strikeouts and just two walks. In contrast, Binghamton’s bullpen has worked to a 10.24 ERA , allowing 13 total runs (11 earned) in 9.2 innings.
CLUTCH: All three of T.J. Rivera’s RBI this season have come with two outs. The infielder is hitting .342 (102-for-298), with 93 RBI, in his career when batting with two outs and runners in scoring position. The 26 year-old is one of two B-Mets (Eudy Pina) to record a hit in all three games played this season.
OOPS I DID IT AGAIN: The SeaWolves lead the EL in errors (9) and have committed multiple in three of their four games. The nine errors have led to 10 unearned runs.
SLOW STARTS: The B-Mets have yet to score a run in the first four innings of a game this season, batting a combined 5-for-54 (.093) during that time. Meanwhile, Binghamton is hitting .304 (24-for-79) in the final five innings of games, scoring all 14 runs during those frames.
666: The B-Mets have broken a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning run in each of their last three games.
HOMERLESS: Dating back to last postseason, the Binghamton pitching staff has not allowed a home run in seven consecutive games, their longest stretch since a 10 game streak, July 30-August 8, 2013.
EXTRA, EXTRA: Gilbert Gomez hit a double and a triple Sunday, his first career hits in Double-A. It was the first time the outfielder had two extra base hits in the same game since doubling and tripling on July 1, 2013 (51 games ago) with St. Lucie (High-A). He doubled and tripled in that game too.
