OPEN THREAD - Zack Wheeler

The true answer to the value of keeping Zack Wheeler will be determined between now and the end of the season.

He dominated... and won... in his first post-trading period game.

Then, he didn't.

But, what's next?

So...

The question is...

Do you believe that the Mets made the right decision to pass on trading Zack Wheeler before the trading deadline ended?

Mack, if the Mets go on to sign Wheeler to an extension, then it was the right decision. Otherwise, no.

So...

It is good if it is but if it is not it is not?

Try and sign him because who exactly do we have to replace him? We do have a solid core here and now is the time to do whatever we need to do to get to the next level.

Wheeler is a solid pitcher with ace stuff and those guys don't grow on trees. He's a .500 pitcher because he isn't consistent but that is the norm with .500 pitchers. If the Mets want to save money they could try for a back end starter with less than ace stuff but you won't get the occasional brilliant starts from that guy that you would with Wheeler. In short I would love to see the Mets re-sign Wheeler.

The Mets should have signed Wheeler after last season since he pitched brilliantly during the 2nd half. They should have not spent money on those other free agents during the Winter and instead that money could have been budgeted towards signing Wheeler during this regular season. Hopefully, now the Mets will resign him to keep that very good rotation intact and starting pitching is what you need the most to win.

Holmer and Tony, if we got the same or better hitting next year, a better pen, and somewhat improved defense, Wheeler could look more like a legit # 2 or # 3 than what he has this year, a 4 or 5.

Since Wheeler was unsigned at the trade deadline they should have traded him to acquire a high level prospect, then they could have planned on re-signing him during this coming off-season like the Yankees did with Chapman. At what price and term for Wheeler? Would you do 5/$50 million? Would he take it?

Tom, I see your point, but Wheeler did pitch like a legit # 2 or # 3 a couple of times this year and the team did get their swagger back this month especially hitting the ball.

5/75

Reese, what you suggest might work or close to that, As for him taking that, perhaps, that remains to be seen, but as a reminder as I recall, Wheeler said that he is happy pitching in NY and when a player says that it gives management at least one foot in the door before contract talks begin so hopefully, a contract can be worked out.

5/75 can possibly work
