Last night, Clubs had until 8pm to finalize their rosters to
protect players from the Rule 5 Draft and as I posted in the breakfast links earlier,
this resulted in a flurry of moves.
As
MLB.com reported, there were 13 players on MLB Pipelines Top 100 prospects,
they all were protected.
As
Mack posted yesterday, the Mets added infielder
Andrés Giménez, RHP
Jordan Humphreys, catcher
Ali Sánchez and LHP
Thomas Szapucki to the 40-man roster. The Mets
40-man roster is at 40.
To even make room for these four, the Mets had to designate RHP
Drew Gagnon for
assignment. One rumor has him going to
play in Korea, but MLB
Trade Rumors says that Drew has not talked to any of the Korean Teams about
a deal.
The biggest no brainer of the group added was Andrés Giménez. Though he struggled in Binghamton this last
year, Andrés has been the best defensive shortstop in the system the past few
years. This Fall, he led the Arizona
Fall League in hitting with a .371 batting average and a .999 OPS. In 18 games, he had 26 hits in 70 at bats
with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 15 RBI’s, 2 stolen bases and a .413 on
base percentage.
It was the play of Andrés Giménez in the Fall League that
have caused some
to call for Amed Rosario to switch to Center Field.
I have included the full list below of Mets Minor league players
that were not protected and are now eligible to be drafted by other teams in
the Rule 5 draft this December.
With the Mets Roster at 40 players, this does not give them
any room to add free agents, or even draft Rule 5 players from other organizations.
My guess is that they will either try a swap of two or three
players for one thereby upgrading the roster while freeing up a spot or
two.
They might also try to slip a
current player through waivers like they did when they signed Adrián
González as a free agent, tried to slip Chasen
Bradford through waivers only to lose him to the Mariners.
Clearly more moves will follow.
Besides the full list of Mets players
eligible in this year’s draft, I include a second list of some of the players
eligible in the 2020 draft. The Mets may
want to think about whether or not these players should be kept and protected
on the roster next year, or perhaps be proactive and deal them this
winter.

Jordan Humphreys jumped back onto the radar screen with 11.2 innings of 1 run, 8 hit, 8 K pitching in Arizona after his over two years of doing almost no pitching due to Tommy John. Saw a video that he added a slider to his other 3 pitches. He is likely not ready for the majors after his long layoff, but he probably would have been a great draft snatch for a poor team like Baltimore. Had to protect him.
Ali Sanchez's value jumped due to the expansion of rosters to 26 in 2020. A fine defensive replacement catcher, like in the old days.
Gimenez was a no-brainer. Szapucki if healthy (which I presume he is) is also a no-brainer.
All 4 added to the 40 man could see major league playing time this year.

I think the # of years before a guy has to be added to 40 man should be changed. Gimenez having to be protected at age 21? Some guys are older than that when they are DRAFTED.
I would propose:
16 and 17 year olds - teams don't need to protect for 6 years, not 5. So, a 16 year old signee need not be protected on 40 man until 22 (6th year) for his next season (age 23).
18, 19 year olds - 5 years.
20 years and older - 4 years.
My hopes is that Blackham, Gonzalez, and Mazeika survive this process today.
Mack, the good news is only 14 guys in baseball went in the Rule 5 draft last year - in which we drafted Kyle Dowdy. We also got Braxton Lee and Chris Mazza in the AAA draft last year.
As I recall, we lost no one in 2018.
The minor league draft rules are: Minor league teams can participate in the draft. AAA teams can draft any eligible player from AA for $24,000. Players chosen in the minor league part of the draft do not need to return to the original teams for any reason.
With the four younger players added recently to the protected 40-man, who then are the best known Mets farmhand names not protected for the Rule 5 Draft coming up. David Peterson, is he one?

NYK - Will they ever figure out, it's the center position? Everything else is pretty much there. They have some really good young players, one or two could be All Stars as well. Randle and Morris Sr. are a nice front court combo. RJ Barrett and one of three PG's are in-place. and the bench seems pretty decent too. Like I have said before, the Indiana Pacers have actually three really good, really young, really quick, and really tough nosed 6'11" 20 year old centers and you just cannot play them all.
NYM - The bullpen was an issue, we all agree. The Mets did use like 50 different relievers in 2019 and that was the symptom of the problem actually. The problem was very few of these AAA relievers belonged in MLB. They have the nucleus in-place right now. The only thing missing from it is a really good and hard throwing later inning lefty reliever, and who knows, maybe a new philosophy on using them all. It's all about getting batters out.
The Trick Here
Find the lefty reliever misisng from this equation. But it isn't so simple really, I know. Because lefty pitchers are not usually known for their 99/100 mph fastball pitches. That's the catch. But that is not to say that it cannot be done. It can be.

Tom, Do you hold on to him hoping that he will help the rotation in 2021 or move him now when he might have more value? The best case is to hold on to him but with limited roster spaces this year and probably as well next year, moving him could be an option as well.
