Mack - FWIW - NL East, Carlos Beltran, Tim Tebow, Free Agency, Tom Brennon

    1.    Remember when the National League East was so poor in talent? The baseball world laughed at us only a couple of years ago. What happened? Well, there were so few free agent signings and trades, but the biggest one of them was between two NL East teams. No, these teams were built through both the domestic and international draft as well as selling off old contracts for rising prospects. Now, guess what? The 5^th team in the division, the Marlins, is just around the block. We should be in great shape around the time that the 2023 season starts, but until then, the Mets must come to realize that this is how you, not only build a team, but maintain it as well.

    2.    It could be that Carlos Beltran never gets to manage one game for the Mets. It’s currently a longshot, but baseball may be able to tie him into the sign fixing mess. He was there in 2017. Either way, I always have said since the day I met him is there is something ‘off’ here. Mets management is already saying that this scandal will not taint the decision to bring Carlos aboard. But suspensions and handed down by the league, not the individual teams. Did you see that Browns a-hole that hit the Steelers QB over the head with the QB’s own helmet. Well that suspension will be a league one. There may be more to come here.

    3.    ‘John From Albany’ and I were talking about Tim Tebow this week. I keep reminding him that he didn’t hit a lick for either Binghamton or Syracuse while John keeps reminding me that is a big draw at both those two stadiums, whether he in the lineup or not. He walks down the sidelines, signing as many autographs for the kiddies as he can before the game starts. Hey! I have an idea! Make him a roving coach between these two teams. Sort of a bench coach. God forbid not a hitting coach.

    4.    The Mets need to get on the horse and start renewing contracts on the stars that will hit free agency soon. Marcus Stroman and Justin Wilson go away in 2021. Noah Syndergaard, Michael Conforto, and Steven Matz in 2022. And Edwin Diaz, Seth Lugo, and Brando Nimmo in 2023. These are the nucleus of the god team you are building to become great. You have to take care of business at home before you look outside your window.

    5.    In closing, Tom Brennon informed me that he will only be occasionally posting between now and next spring. He had a great one yesterday which I didn’t expect to see on the site. I respect his decision and hope he enjoys the time away from his tablet on the LIRR. We hope he revises that,  but we understand the decision made here.
