21. Drake Nightengale, RHP, South Alabama

South Alabama seems to have its best seasons when they have a slightly undersized right-handed workhorse at the front of the rotation. Think the 2016 team led by Kevin Hill and the 2017 team with Randy Bell.    

It’s a disappointment, then, that the 2020 team didn’t fully get to see what it could do with Drake Nightengale leading the way. Through four starts, he had a 3.09 ERA, 39 strikeouts and a .218 opponent batting average in 23.1 innings.

23. Andrew Beesley, OF, Louisiana-Monroe

ULM came flying out of the gate in 2020. It was 12-3 with series wins over 2019 regional teams McNeese State and Illinois State.

Beesley was a huge part of that success. He hit .400/.565/.600 with 13 walks compared to just five strikeouts, and he was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases for an offense that was hitting .316/.445/.483 and was setting a torrid pace for stolen bases as a team. That we won’t get to see how ULM’s and Beesley’s season would have played out in 2020 is one of the unfortunate things we lost in a shortened campaign.

          42. Masyn Winn, SS/RHP, Kingwood (HS)

If a position player selected outside of the first round is going to turn into a star, it might be Winn. He's an absolute toolshed; a two-way player with an Arkansas commitment who could become a notable player on either side of the ball. Winn pairs near-elite bat speed with average strength. He swings and misses a fair amount, but he counterbalances that tendency with an athletic profile that could see him develop into an above-average shortstop and baserunner. Winn is raw, and some prefer him as a pitcher, but he's a deep cut of a name to keep in mind.

          19. Mets: Jared Kelley, RHP, Refugio HS (Tex.)

There’s a good chance Kelley is gone by now, but the Mets would certainly have an interest should he get here. If they wanted to go the college route, there are slew of them to be considered, many who I’ll have coming off the board in the next six picks or so.

Arizona picks at #18, one slot before the Mets, The AZ Snake pit listed 18 players that could be on their draft board at this position. 

One is:

          Austin Wells, C, University of Arizona, B/T: L/R

Wells is a bat-first catcher who has the physical tools to stick behind the plate if he can improve his receiving abilities. Wells would have been a Day 1 pick in the 2018 Draft out of Bishop Gorman HS (NV), but an injury caused him to fall out of that range and enroll at Arizona instead. Wells is a draft-eligible sophomore, but signability will not be an issue as a likely middle of the first round selection. His bat and arm strength also profile for a corner infield position or left field, where he’s played on days he’s not behind the plate. Even if he doesn’t remain behind the plate, the bat is worth the gamble plus there are 3-4 other positions to try him out at (3B, LF, 1B).
