John From Albany – Mets Breakfast Links 6/18/2020

Good Morning.  Happy Birthday Dave Schneck, today was to be the Brooklyn Cyclones Opening Day, it is the anniversary of the Lenny Dykstra for Juan Samuel trade, and MLB and the Union seem to move closer to deal.

MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Agree To Terms With Second-Rounder Isaiah Greene. He’ll receive $850K. The 69th overall selection used to nab Greene came with a $929,800 pool allocation. Accordingly, the New York organization will actually save some funds to apply to other drafted players.

MLB Trade Rumors: Mets fourth-rounder Matthew Dyer is on board with a $350K bonus, per MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo (Twitter link). That’ll save the New York org nearly $230K to apply to other draftees. Dyer, an Arizona product, ranked 333rd on Baseball America’s final draft board. Mayo credits him with a strong throwing arm and good athleticism for a backstop.

SNY.TV (MetsBlog): Mets' Marcus Stroman attends youth baseball practice in Tampa: 'Seeing those smiles ... nothing beats that!'

Mets.com: 'Night and day' difference for Orze post-cancer. Mets draftee lauded as 'high-makeup kid, high-quality kid'.

Blogging Mets.com: Shea Stadium in Movies: “Deadly Illusion”:…it starred the former coolest man in America, Billy Dee Williams…it was shot inside and outside Shea Stadium…There is a shootout, someone falls from an upper deck — what more do you need?!”

Rising Apple: Rising Apple - Mets: Top five worst contracts in New York Mets history. Tatiana Snedeker thinks the worst was Bobby Bonilla (1991, five years, $29 million).

MLB LINKS:

AP News: Manfred, Clark reach framework: 60 games, full prorated pay. Baseball’s postseason would expand from 10 teams to 16 this year, and the two wild card games would transform into an eight-team wild-card round with eight best-of-three series; The designated hitter would expand to all games for the first time, also involving games between National League teams, for 2020 and 2021; Both sides would contribute jointly to initiatives for social justice; The union also would waive additional claims that could cause an expensive grievance.

MLB Trade Rumors: The players would have $33MM of the $170MM advance they received from their March agreement with the owners forgiven, per Heyman. Teams, meanwhile, would be able to sell advertisements on uniforms in 2020 and ’21 in order to increase their revenues, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Joel Sherman NY Post: I’m not counting on MLB 2020 season happening just yet. “Manfred left those meetings believing a framework was reached…the players association issued this terse statement: ‘Reports of an agreement are false.’ All that was missing were disclaimers about the existence of Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy.”

ESPN.com: Sources on both sides of the negotiations said there is an expectation that further talks will result in a schedule of about 65 games.

NBC Sports: ‘Framework’ includes DH in NL for 2020-21, could become permanent. “If we never see the DH in the National League again, then it’s fitting that Giants lefty Madison Bumgarner (now with the Diamondbacks) hit the last home run as a pitcher. He homered off of Rockies pitcher Jeff Hoffman on September 24 last year.”

MLB trade Rumors: Some Teams Are Offering 2021 Contracts To Incoming Amateur Players. The idea here is evidently to obtain the rights to the player while delaying his entry to the team’s system.

NY Post: Scott Boras calls MLB’s billion-dollar TV deal ‘the rectal thermometer’. “I say it as the truest form of the temperature of the game.”

Minor League Baseball:

Asian Baseball:

Kia Tigers 7  NC Dinos 6 Aaron Altherr 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. (Box Score).

Samsung Lions 6 Doosan Bears 3 Chris Flexen, 4 innings, 3 runs, 3 hits, 5 Ks, 3 BB (Box Score).

Today’s game between the Kia Tigers and the NC Dinos was postponed.

Mack’s Blast from Past: 6/21/2012: The changing of baseball. Mack writes about his first game, Ebbets Field, 1957.

Transactions:

New York Mets released Joe Torre on June 18, 1977.

New York Mets traded Lenny DykstraRoger McDowell and Tom Edens to the Philadelphia Phillies for Juan Samuel on June 18, 1989.

New York Mets traded Allen Watson to the Seattle Mariners for Justin Dunning and Mac Suzuki on June 18, 1999.

New York Mets traded Collin McHugh to the Colorado Rockies for Eric Young on June 18, 2013.

1989
The Phillies trade second baseman Juan Samuel to the Mets for outfielder Lenny Dykstra, relief pitcher Roger McDowell, and a player to be named later, that will be minor league pitcher Tom Edens. New York's experiment to turn their new infielder, who will play only 86 games with New York, into a center fielder will fail miserably, while 'Nails' will go on to be a three-time All-Star and a cog in Philadelphia's National League championship in 1993, being selected as the runner-up for the Most Valuable Player Award.
2004
At Shea Stadium, Hall of Fame catchers Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Yogi Berra take part in a pregame ceremony to honor Mike Piazza for hitting the most home runs as a catcher in baseball history. The Mets' backstop established the new mark, breaking Carlton Fisk's record, with his 352nd home run on May 5.

2012
Allowing only a fifth-inning single by Wilson Betemit in the Mets' 5-0 victory over Baltimore at Citi Field, R.A. Dickey throws his second consecutive one-hitter, becoming the first pitcher to record back-to-back one-hit games since Dave Stieb accomplished the feat in 1988. The 37 year-old knuckleball pitcher, who hasn't allowed an earned run in 42.2 innings, also limited Tampa Bay to a lone safety in his last start.

2010: The Mets extend their winning streak to 8 games when rookie Hisanori Takahashi, with help from Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez, shuts out their crosstown rivals the New York Yankees, 4 - 0.

2013: The Mets get a pair of outstanding performances from young pitchers in sweeping a doubleheader from the Braves. In the opener, second-year man Matt Harvey, 24, takes a no-hitter into the 7th inning and strikes out 13 on his way to a 4 - 3 win. In the nitecap, rookie Zack Wheeler, 23, making his highly anticipated major league debut, pitches six shutout innings and strikes out 7 as the Mets win again, 6 - 1.

Hard to believe Dave Schenck is 71 - time sure flies.

I probably should care about what the two sides are grappling over, but frankly I don't care. Everyone has enough else on their minds. PLAY BALL!

We seem to have built up a lot of cash to sign Ginn - I can't imagine him passing that up, since Tommy John surgery does not always result in a return to full capabilities.

Tom -

All the signing issues are addressed with the players before they pick them.

Both the Mets and Ginn know the magic number needed to sign him.

I think you will even see a shaving of PCA's bonus to bring JT in.

Mack, so it sounds like all that stands between the Mets and this being a super draft is Ginn's elbow healing fully.

This is 180 degrees different than the Giolito draft. Mets went 12th and went for "safe" Gavin Cecchini, while the Nats 4 picks later knew about Giolito's elbow issues and high ceiling, and ignored the elbow issues and went for the high ceiling.

Giolito was 14-9 and fanned 228 in 176 innings last year. Cecchini? I dunno, you tell me. Not so "safe".
