2019 Draft Recap

As we head towards the 2020 MLB Draft, we are going to detail the last ten years of Mets drafts.  Today, we look at 2019.

Very early to tell but so far Brodie Van Wagenen receives high marks for the 2019 draft.  His strategy was to draft high end prospects in the early rounds and college seniors in the later rounds.  This enabled him to sign his #1 pick Brett Baty as well as top rated Pitcher Matthew Allan as the # 3 pick.

It seemed like as soon as he was drafted, Brett Baty moved to the top of everyone’s prospect list.  Last year he played just 51 games, 188 At-Bats hitting 7 HR, 33 RBIs, .234 BA/ .368 OBP/ .452 SLG.  In the games I “saw” (on the radio that is), he always seemed to have long at bats and a real good eye at the plate.  I think he is the real deal.

After committing to the University of Florida, Matthew Allan fell in the draft where the Mets were able to select him in the third round.  By saving money elsewhere, the Mets signed Matthew for a $2.5 million, about 20-25% over the slot value.  Matthew was only able to get into 6 regular season games after signing for a 1-0, 2.61 ERA, 10 innings, 10 hits, 3 Earned Runs, 14 K’s, 5 Walks.  However, he was much better in the playoffs for Brooklyn throwing 5 perfect innings in two different outings with 3 Ks.

But don’t discount the college seniors the Mets selected.

Outfielders Jake Mangum and Antoine Duplantis and relief pitchers Mitch Ragan and Andrew Edwards helped Brooklyn win the NY Penn League Championship.

Here is what Mack said the day Jake was drafted: “If I ran a Major League team’s front office, I’d draft Jake Mangum early and pay him what it takes to sign him. I love the way Mangum plays. I love the way he competes. I love the way he wins.”Jake led a Brooklyn team that stole a lot of bases with 17, he also was a clutch hitter.  In 33 at bats with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position, Jake excelled hitting .364.

Antoine Duplantis; .237, 20 RBIs, 5 SBs; Antoine played mostly left field and led off for Brooklyn.  He tripled in the tying run and scored the winning run in the championship game.  A good defender Antoine had 153 putouts, 16 assists, and just one error.

Mitch Ragan, B-R/T-R; 2019 4th round draft pick from Creighton; named to the NY Penn All Star team with a 3-2 record, 3.09 ERA, 31 K’s in 35 innings;

#37: Andrew Edwards, a lefty relief pitcher that can get big strikeouts in big spots.  With the championship on the line and Brooklyn holding on to a one run lead, it was Andrew Edwards that recorded the final 6 outs.  For the 2019 season he was 3-2, 3.30 ERA, 35 K’s in 30 innings, 14 walks with 2 HR allowed.  Andrew pitched 4 shutout innings in the playoffs including the final two to win the championship.  In the ninth inning of the Championship clinching game, Edwards struck out the side including three straight swing and miss strikes to the last batter.

This was a solid draft with 1-4 star potential.

A very fine draft - nice to have a draft, early on, that you feel thrilled about. This was one of those.

He had a good draft. The agent knows how to sign young players
