Scouting Report - SS - Colson Montgomery

Colson Montgomery

SS      6-4      190      Southridge HS (IN)

PG -

Colson Montgomery, SS, Team Indiana

Montgomery continued rising over the course of the circuit and is now, to some teams, one of the best prep bats in the class. His lefthanded stroke stands out for the bat speed and the strength behind it, and he projects for huge power long term while also retaining the athleticism and tools to play the left side of the infield. He’s one to keep a very close eye on next spring.

Colson Montgomery is a 2021 SS with a 6-4 190 lb. frame from Holland, IN who attends Southridge. Long and athletic build, very projectable physically. Left handed hitter, hits from a tall stance, drifts his lower half into contact from a high lift trigger, fluid swing with some bat speed and leverage, pull to mid field approach, has strength in his hands at contact and can create some jump, very projectable with the bat with lots of untapped power there. 6.91 runner, has quick actions at the ball, moves well for his size and is athletic and balanced on challenging plays, gets rid of the ball quickly from multiple arm slots, chance to stay in the middle of the field as he gets stronger

Prep Baseball Report -

4/23/2019 Spring Scout Blog: No. 1 ranked prospect in Indiana's 2021 class. Long, athletic frame at 6-foot-4, 185 pounds. Shows good control of his body for his size and age. Athletic movements in all facets of his game. Defensively, shows fluid actions with above average glove work; soft hands, clean exchange. Arm action is a little long at times; plenty of arm strength to stay on the left side of the field at the next level. Shows range to both his left and right with athletic footwork. Great feel for the SS position. Offensively the LHH hits from an athletic crouch setup, using a leg kick timing trigger. Load is smooth, quick bat speed through the zone. Divey at times. Went 2-4 with a HR and 2RBI on the night. High level D1 prospect with tons of projectability. Excels in multiple sports: football & basketball.

Prospect Worldwide -

Colson Montgomery – 3B/SS: If not for his age, (19.3) on draft day, Colson likely would have found himself much higher in the rankings. But that is a pretty big impact on any prospects profile and it does stand out as a HS draftee. But man… is he an exciting player on the field. From Plus-Plus bat speed, hip separation and lower half usage that helps him produce (55+) Power while also flashing an Average (50) Hit tool. And it doesn’t stop there. He shows ability to stick at SS long-term however the size (6’4, 190lbs) likely will push him over to 3B where he grades as a Plus (60) Defender.

I see guys like this and always think, "who would I have drafted first, him or Cecchini?" Usually the answer is not Cecchini.

The return of Sandy brings back all this moments

Someone wrote this about Cecchini at the time he was drafted, Funny that back then they went "safe pick" because there was a shortage of shortstops.
Boy, has that changed:

"Cecchini is a speedy shortstop with great instincts who hit .413 with 7 hRs, 32 RBI and 31 SBs during his senior HS season. The 18-year-old should be able to stick at SS but will be an up-the-middle infielder, regardless.

He's a contact hitter with little power potential, and it seems like the Mets made a "safe" pick here as scouting reports suggest Cecchini has a high floor, but not the highest ceiling.

That being said, everyday SS's are hard to come by and Cecchini could hold a lot of value as he rises through the system."

BTW, the "speedy" Cecchini stole just 33 bases in 650 minor league games. Speedy?
