Puma NY Post: Mets snag first win behind Marcus Stroman, bullpen redemption.
“The ball was put in play Tuesday, Stroman’s defense responded and scoring was
a challenge for the opposition...And this time the Mets bullpen protected a
lead.”
Anthony DiComo
Mets.com: Stro keeps ball on ground, lifts Mets to 1st W. “Since Marcus
Stroman’s first full season in 2016, no qualified pitcher has produced ground
balls at a higher rate.”
Tim
Healey Newsday: “Pitching in a game that mattered for the first time in a
year and a half, Marcus Stroman showed no signs of rust. He held the Phillies
to one run and three hits in six innings. The run came on Didi Gregorius' homer
in the fourth, a shot to centerfield. Stroman struck out three and walked two.
Of his 18 outs, 13 came on groundballs.”
Charlie Hangley Mets360: “In top of the
fourth, Dominic Smith hit the Mets first home run of the year, a bomb to the
opposite field, knocking in Pete Alonso, who had walked just ahead of him. The
game stood there until the seventh, when the New Yorkers busted this thing open
with some help from the Phillies’ bullpen”. (Subscription required).
Deesha
Thosar NY Daily News: “The Mets put up a four-run seventh inning after
Vince Velasquez walked three of the first four batters he faced. That the Mets
capitalized on the opportunity, and extended their one-run lead to a five-run
advantage, was a positive sign after they led the league with runners left in
scoring position in 2020.”
Metstradamus: The Road To Vindication Where Worry Is At Every Rest Stop. "But Luis Rojas used Miguel Castro and Trevor May for consecutive days, presumably because he doesn’t trust Jeurys Familia, Dellin Betances, or Robert Gsellman with a five run lead."
Brooklyn Trolley Blogger: N.Y. Mets Earn First Win Despite More Late Inning High-Jinx. Bullpen already singing the Broad Street Blues. "This time Castro in the seventh yielded a run on three hits with two strikeouts. However, Trevor May fared better in his second outing, fanning two in the eighth. Jeurys Familia, to no one's surprise, struggled while closing out the ninth."
Mike Vaccaro NY Post: Mets’ Luis Rojas needs to learn the Buck Showalter rule. “Here’s the thing I learned as a young manager, and it’s the thing I see with just about every young manager, even those who have gone on to be very successful in the job,” Showalter said behind the batting cage at Yankee Stadium. “This here is a simple game. I know, it’s funny that I’m saying that because people believe all I do is overthink things. And you know something? Sometimes maybe I do.”

Hoping JDD is OK - that HBP did not pass the sound test.
Smith is one of the best hitters in the major leagues - the plan should be to start him in at least 145 games - sorry, Pillar, and Almora.
Nimmo 3 walks - embrace the on base machine.
Loved the sac fly by Lindor - he did not try to do too much.
Pete looks dead serious this year.
Stroman was acrobatic and so smooth on the play at first after a brilliant fielding play by Pete - both got a "10" on my card.
Familia looked good - one dinker grounder hit and one soft hit off the fists. It happens.
Liked Castro winning his battle against Harper.
A lot to like - just gotta get McNeil going. And JDD healthy.
Former Met Philip Evans might just be becoming an everyday IF for the Pirates. So far this season, 5 for 12 with 2 HRs. Like the second coming of TJ Rivera - both are slightly over .300 career.
I was going to mention the Evans point, Tom. Nice news.
How did Davis look at third to you guys so far? I haven’t seen much, although I caught the Philly ninth last night; Familia did ok, not his fault.
Davis only played one game so far at 3B, hasn't been tested.
Familia looked good, I thought.
Jimmy
Evans will play the next two weeks because Hayes is hurt. After that, he will be a bench piece I think.
Evans’ big chance. Seize it. So far, so good.
Evans played LF today - 1 for 3 - hitting .400 now.
