Tom Brennan - BACK WHEN PITCH COUNTS WERE LAUGHED AT

PITCH COUNTS REMIND ME OF COUNT DRACULA.

BOTH REALLY SUCK.

Jake was firing bullets last night - 6 shutout innings, 77 pitches, pulled to protect his arm, I guess.

Mets lost.

Mets lose a lot of Jake games over the year when he is pulled early.

But here is a game from the golden years of when I was a wide-eyed baseball-loving kid:

On July 2, 1963, Juan Marichal pitched a 16-inning shutout against the Milwaukee Braves, outdueling Warren Spahn, who pitched 151/3 scoreless innings before Willie Mays won it 1-0 with a home run. Marichal threw 227 pitches; Spahn threw 201.

16 inning game, one pitcher for each team, 428 total pitches, an average of 214.

214 is 137 more pitches than Jake threw.

Just wanted to let Luis Rojas know - he probably already does - since his pappy Felipe Alou went 1 for 6 in that game.

So I'll just say it:

Luis, I'll be happy to take 214 Jake pitches over 2 games.

But not if it takes 3 starts to get there.

You may want to play it safe.  I want to win.
