Tom Brennan - A FEW GAMES DO NOT A SEASON MAKE

Early season games can be hair-raising

After the controversial Mets' win on Thursday, the Mets sit at 2-2.

Every win, every loss, feels magnified somehow when it is this early in the season.  Especially a season where where they've only managed to play 4 games in 9 days.

Who's struggling?  What will it mean for the last 158 games?

Does the bullpen suck after just a few games, etc?

Hard to tell - here are two examples why:

In 1986, the Mets started out 2-3.

My prediction to my boss of a 105 win season was getting off to a bad start.  I was getting razzed.  "No one wins 105."

Was I wrong?

Well, the Mets then proceeded to win 19 out of 20, moving to 20-4, on their way to 108 wins and WS glory.  I called it.

In 2018, the Mets, much to everyone's surprise, opened the season 11-1.

Could it last?

Nope.  The Mets went a gruesome 66-84 the rest of the way.  Jake's Cy Young, and Nimmo and McNeil's emergence, were not nearly enough.

All the 11-1 start did was keep them from getting a higher draft pick.  Man, if you're gonna lose, lose BIGLY!

So, for 2021, we all need to calm down, know we can have our opinions, but what the record will turn out to be after 20 games, and after 162 games?

We won't know that based on the first 4 contests.

But, thanks for thinking with your elbow, Mike, it feels a lot less desperate to be 2-2 than to be 1-3.  Heck, if we win today, we're 3-2, and that makes us a .600 ball club, and...
