Mack - Thoughts on Day 2

Morning.

I took a long shower and had some time to think about Day 2 of The Kumsr Rocker Rolling Thunder Review  and here they are.

1. Let's first go back to Day 1... A+++ rating. May be the best first round pick in 20 years. The 6 mil price tag was expected and would impact Day 2 from the start

2. I didn't have any secret sauce saying that the Mets would go all Bonzo Dog Band on starters in Day 2. It just made sense. We had two viable starters that were projected to be successful in the majors. Not just guys we could call up to give up 3 runs in 5 innings. No, I mean really successful.

3. I expected a top pitcher on Day 1 but not someone that would cost this much so the money has to come from somewhere

4. There is a lot of tall speedballers here that have proven they can miss a lot of bats but a lot of this has come from what I call "wild whiffs". Frankly, if some of the batters that faced them would just have left their bats on their shoulders they would probably still have a. 400-OBP against them.

5. I think Mike Vasil probably signs for slot and will go on to become a mid to low rotation starter.

6. I want to see how the slotting goes before totally committing to my thoughts on this draft but my guess right now is two things were accomplished here. One, we filled the 2022 rosters with some much needed starters and, two, someone in the organization thinks they can straighten out these flame throwers. If they can then this will be a hell of a draft. There are a bunch of Friday and Saturday starters here that pitched a lot of innings against top teams.

7. Don't be surprised if around half of these starters are converted to power relievers.

8. My guess is tomorrow will be "fill in the positions" day. We won't be looking for any future stars here, though we won't shake a stick if a Jake or Jeff comes around. No, these will be picks to fill the holes on specific positions in the chain.

9. My overall grade right now would be: Incomplete, leaning to C+.

10. Look for the rest of my posts to go up throughout the week ending with my final thoughts.

Lastly, yesterday broke the all-time readership for one day on this site. Draft days are always the top days on this site and I thank you for your loyal readership.

Oh yeah...

And right after I post the Day 3 posts and my thoughts,  the 2022 scouting reports will start posting.

I won't be able to fully evaluate this draft until after I find out what each player is getting as a signing bonus

GOOD ANALYSIS, MACK.

We do need power relievers that are competent. Never can have enough of those.

I agree it is "incomplete" so far.

How about the two bats in the top 10? Schwartz (4th) and Kendall (7th)?

And do you think that Kumar slipped to 10th because other teams knew he wanted $6 million to be drafted and did not want to go there? If so, our luck.

Lastly, ignoring Harvey's health issues longer term, do you think Rocker will be as good as early Matt Harvey? That would REALLY be something.

1. Both of these bats know how to get on base but don't look for pop here.

2. I think Boras spread the word about the 6mil demand and chased away teams 6-9

3. Yes I do. Caddilac arm. Maybe better.

Understanding that it would have taken 6 million for Kumar I wish the Mets would have done the Brodie strategy (Did I really say that?)

we had 4.7 slot for the 10 pick which means we had to make up 1.3.

I would have like to take the best available guy in the second round who would take slot or just about slot (1.6M). and then picked all college seniors to make up the difference in salary.

6 Million and 1.6M = 7.6M and we had 9M and change plus 5%.

I would have like a 2 man draft considering Kumar's demands.

However I really wish they would change the draft process all together... the competitive rounds are total BS.

if someone declared for the draft then your rights should belong to the team. you either sign or you forgo being drafted.
having this option to being drafted but could go back in the draft if you do not like where your were chosen or how much is your slot is total BS.

and slot the picks. this being able to spread your money or the need to is BS, pass on the best player available to save money makes no sense... this is why baseball is so archaic.

Mack, I think you are being harsh. If we know most guys after the third round are a crapshoot, why be upset at the sporadic shooting if that plan can get you an ace at #10? Also, the Ziegler pick seems to have much upside.

My take was that a) they had no choice in order to sign Rocker, and b) this is the Tampa Rays approach to pitching arms. Get guys that miss bats and let’s try to see how many we can get to control what they have. Hopefully in a few years we are looking at this as one of the best drafts ever because unlike the Woodmansee picks and Tiberius and wasted picks, these are arms that can be nurtured, hopefully. As for the the two position players, the first baseman is more “a hitter” that used to play 3B and SS, let’s see if he can follow the Daniel Murphy track. The SS/CF is an athlete, hopefully better than the Evan Wilson / Adrian Hernandez athlete guys that can’t hit a lick.

Love the information, too, thank you Mack.

*Tiberi…

Autocorrect, of course. Who the heck is Tiberius?

As for my grade, I have to give at least an A- being that they got the best player in the draft at number 10. If Ziegler does turn out to be a first round find, then they can move up to an A. If they can get me Gage Jump and push a big enough pile of money in front of him to sign, like they did with a pitcher in the 11th round a few years back, then my grade becomes an emphatic A+.

Any draft that gets you a max in future WAR is what you need. Rocker sounds like a big WAR accumulator
