Tom Brennan - METS 2021 ROOKIE BALL UPDATES

All neophytes are guppies

The Mets now have their Florida Complex League (FCL) rookie team recently starting play, in addition to the 4 more senior teams above them.

As of Thursday, the Mets team was 10-5, with 85 runs scored.  The Yankees squad (13-4) has scored 125 runs.

16 teams in the league, including two teams for Detroit and Baltimore.  You would think, given their draft positioning, that their teams would be doing well.  Not so.

Detroit's two teams have a net -100 run differential and an 8-22 record.  Baltimore's two squads are 9-23, with a -74 in runs.

Back to our guys.  Mets stars so far:

CF Omar De Los Santos: 12 for 28, 3 doubles, a triple and just 3 Ks.  He hit .278 in the DSL in 2019, and like everyone else, did not play last year. Promoted to St Lucie and still raking.  Overall, .379 in 66 ABs through Sunday. I dunno about you…I kinda like .379 hitters.

C Juan Loyo is 7 for 18 early on.

DH Raul Beracierta has a .528 OBP in the early going.

LF Carlos Dominguez has 10 RBIs in 32 ABs and a .344 average.  He also started out in the DSL in 2019, hitting .266 with some pop.

3B Greg Guerrero is indeed still around, and while not hitting like a star, is hitting .270 (10 for 37), with 2 walks and 11 Ks.  Greg started his career in 2016.

Pitching-wise, Robert Colina is 2-0, 3,86, with 21 Ks in 14 IP.

Starting on July 12, the Dominican Summer League (DSL) re-launched games for the first time since 2019, with the Mets hosting 2 developmental teams.

The DSL highlight of the year was produced not by the Mets, but by the DSL team of the Mets' crosstown rivals.  What happened in that game?  From the DSL site:

"Forty runs, 36 hits, 5 homers, 6 errors, 3 stolen bases, 5 wild pitches, 2 balks, 33 players used, 215 pitches thrown over 3 hours and 42 minutes -- all culminated into a historic Dominican Summer League game on Wednesday.

Behind a four-hit, seven-RBI effort from Brayan Jimenez, the DSL Yankees clobbered the Twins, 38-2, at the Minnesota Twins Academy in Tierra Alta."

38-2.  Wow.  Not a football score. Five TDs and a FG ain’t bad, though.

Anyway, here are some highlights of how the Mets' DSL teams are doing:

2B Kevin Villavicencio has a .364/.500/.500 slash and 3 steals after 7 games.

RF Fabian Machado (great name) in 8 games is hitting .348/.483/.435.

OF Joel Flores - if you miss Wilmer, you do have Joel, who in 8 games in .320/.433/.400.

OF Dyron Campos actually has a dinger and is .320/.400/.400 after 8 games.

Tired of Edwin Diaz (I’m not, just for clear, transparent reporting) - how about righty Joel Diaz, then, with 10 innings, no earned runs, and 13 Ks.

You like the number 0.96 as in ERA?  Then Kevin Ribon and Javier Atencio are the hombres for you. Each with 1 run allowed  in 9.1 IP, and 26 Ks between them.

OK, these seasons are really early stage, but a few names to keep in mind.

Colina - Rule 5 eligible this off season. He may get moved to St. Lucie to see what he can do before the end of the year. I think he will be protected from the minor league portion on the AAA roster.

Always fun to fantasize about prospects.

Unfortunately many of our prospects wind up more like Kumar from the movies than like John Rocker (bigotry aside).
