BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (20-34) picked up a win for the second straight night over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (23-30) with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday evening at Mirabito Stadium.
Carlos Cortes had a pair of RBI doubles and Luis Carpio hit a two run home-run while RHP Adam Oller (3-3) picked up his second consecutive win going 5.1 innings allowing only two earned runs and striking out six.
The Ponies started the scoring early getting a 1st inning lead for the second night in a row with the first of Cortes' two RBI doubles and a Mark Vientos sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. New Hampshire would load the bases with nobody out in the third but only managed to get one run as the Ponies turned a double play to help work out of the jam.
In their half of the third, the Ponies would use a Luis Carpio two out two run home-run to extend the lead to 4-1 over the Fisher Cats. New Hampshire would get a run in the fourth and a run in the sixth on an RBI single to cut the Ponies lead to 4-3.
The Fisher Cats would come close to tying the game in the seventh against RHP Allan Winans but the Ponies turned a double play that ended the inning with a close play at the plate to maintain their one run lead. Carlos Cortes would keep the Ponies momentum going with another RBI double to make it 5-3.
In the eight inning the Fisher Cats would get the first two on base before Ponies RHP Tom Hackimer got Vinny Capra to ground into a double play and struck out Tanner Kirwer looking. Hackimer then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first save with the Rumble Ponies.
The Rumble Ponies look to start the homestand with three straight wins as they face the Fisher Cats Thursday night with first pitch at 6:35 PM ET.
POSTGAME NOTES: The Rumble Ponies are 7-1 against New Hampshire this season. Carlos Cortes hit his 31st extra base hit after coming into Wednesday night's action second in the Northeast League with 29.
