Can never have enough good pitching. (Mike Steffanos pic)
The Mets' minor league team records going into Friday had pretty miserable records:
Syracuse: 23-41
Binghamton: 24-37
Brooklyn: 21-41
St. Lucie: 33-31
That's 101-150 for the folks scoring at home.
Actually improving somewhat, but clearly not good.
Was it due to the offense (thru Friday)?
Syracuse: 308 runs in 63 games (13 more on Friday)
Binghamton: 282 runs in 60 games (7 more on Friday)
Brooklyn: 252 runs in 61 games (6 more on Friday)
St. Lucie: 359 runs in 63 games (shut out on Friday)
Nope. Overall, around 5 runs per game.
Any Mets' minors follower would like that.
Was it due to the pitching (coming into Friday)?
Syracuse: 5.92 ERA and 41 unearned runs
Binghamton: 5.20 ERA and 40 unearned runs
Brooklyn: 4.72 ERA and 51 unearned runs
St. Lucie: 4.88 ERA and 43 unearned runs
Emphatically, YES. And certainly the “defense” as well.
251 total games, 175 unearned runs.
Bad pitching leads to more unearned runs, typically, and here is no exception.
Add the earned and unearned plate-crossers, and that's about 6 runs per game.
THAT is why they are 101-150.
THAT is why they lose so much.
It's not the hitters' faults.
IT'S THE PITCHING, STUPID.
So is it any wonder they drafted so much pitching?
After all - if you just focus on Mets' minors "red" hitting prospects, as Mack calls them?
Perhaps a top 10 prospects list of hitters. Certainly in the top 15.
It is pretty easy to visualize where a Vientos...Baty...Mauricio...Alvarez...Crow...and Ramirez could fit into a future Mets' line up.
Pitching, though? I did not try to figure it out in detail, but...
Has to have been dead last in team prospect ranking going into the draft.
Megill is up...Allan is out thru 2022...
And mostly, other than JT Ginn, top pitching prospects are few and far between.
So, the Mets smartly drafted LOTs and LOTs of pitchers. In search of equilibrium.

The Mets lost a lot of minor league starting pitching to injury especially TJ Surgery. Which means these pitchers are not going to be around until 2023. So yes the Mets minor league need pitching and especially starting pitching. I feel bad for the Binghamton Mets when Luc Rennie goes on the mound. It is like a loss before you even start the game. He should either be released or sent to Brooklyn. I think they should be looking for pitching elsewhere. Why have other teams drafted undrafted players and not the Mets. They could sign pitchers who might be a diamond in the rough and try them in their minor league system and maybe improve those numbers.
Great point Raw. The Mets have been picking up 4A pitchers like Vance Worley and Akeem Bostick. They did sign Cam Opp who has not yet panned out - 9.20 ERA for Brooklyn. They released Frank Valentino, Matt Mullenbach, and Jared Biddy who both did well in Brooklyn in 2019 - all three were independent league, non-draftees. This administration must not think highly of such players.
Tom - your stats bring home one thing for sure - do not trade JT Gin in the next two week. Mets need all the young pitching they can keep.
I think the Mets have put most of their effort into trying to get more depth for the Major League club, and it's time to think more long term. I like the idea of signing some undrafted pitchers. I'm also curious to see what they do come January 15 when the next international free-agent signing period begins
All good points, gents. I think, with pitchers vanishing with juries so often, JT Ginn is a must-keep. Now if we could trade him and Lindor for Tatis, I would sure listen.
I just checked BA and they have the Mets signing Grant Hartwig a RHP as a NDFA out of Miami(Ohio). Glad to see they are doing this. The Angels have signed 14 players.
I wonder if Hartwig was on Mack's radar screen. Good they snapped him up - get him out there.
