We've looked thus far at pitching and infield offense. Several folks contributed thoughts on the latter regarding James McCann, Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, Mark Vientos and the man who might be displace, Eduardo Escobar.
Before you all get hopping up and down angry for that conclusion, allow me to remind you of two things from last season. How well did the Mets do when Starling Marte went down with his injury? Do you recall when the slump began and perpetuated in earnest?
Next, let me also point out that Brandon Nimmo is a free agent. He's a bit of a divisive player in that every time you think you have him figured out he does something to surprise you. He came up as a suspect outfielder in the corners and now has transformed himself into one of the better glove men playing center field.
Perhaps the biggest surprise about Nimmo, however, is the combination of all that he does. He's not an All Star at his performance level, yet everyone is planning for him to earn somewhere in the vicinity of $20 to $25 million per season for about 5 years. That's a lot of coin for someone who has shown to be very good but not great.
The number that perhaps justifies the investment is his current WAR score. By Baseballreference.com they have him pegged at 5.1 for this past season. Depending on whose calculations you feel are valid, that 5.1 score translates to $5.4 million per WAR.
The third leg of the three man outfield is last year's free agent newcomer Mark Canha. Almost a clone of Nimmo, Canha's power was down but his batting average and OBP were up. He was earning more than Nimmo as he had done the free agency dance already and at age 33 already he's getting paid for his past accomplishments.
On a pure stats basis, Nimmo didn't accomplish much more with the bat. He finished 2022 hitting .274 with 16 HRs and 64 RBIs. His OBP was an identical .367. He did this in 580 ABs. Canha has 120 fewer and accomplished just about the same. Where Nimmo shined is with his center field defense. Canha is adequate while Nimmo is among the best in the league.
Then there's the fourth outfielder who might again find himself out there in 2023 -- batting champion Jeff McNeil. Like Canha, he doesn't embarrass himself on the green grass, but he's a far superior hitter.
OK, so let's consider for a minute what happens if indeed another club finds Brandon Nimmo irresistible and the Mets are not willing to fork over a superior paycheck given Nimmo's injury history and his very good but hardly noteworthy output.
Who plays center field? Is it Starling Marte in the later stage of his career assuming the role he once received a Gold Glove to play? Do the Mets try to convert one of their many minor league bats from the infield into a center fielder? Do they have to look outside the organization to find someone?
Right now with McNeil at least penciled in to play second base, you are going to be fighting for ABs for the rookies and for Eduardo Escobar. Canha and Escobar earn north of $10 million and that's big money (at least by Wilpon former standards) to have someone sit on the bench.

Morning Reese
I wouldn't move McNeil to the outfield until they give that base to Ronny Mauricio.
I know Ronny is tearing up in winter ball, but he ain't playing the Braves in Atlanta, is he?
I would leave both Cahna and Marte on the corners.
So, you have three out of four positions being discussed covered big time.
Leaving CF, which ironically is what you are writing about.
Brandon Nimmo has turned out to be an excellent defensive centerfielder and you all know my thoughts in "middle field" defense. He hits enough and I would sign him in a heartbeat, but he's out of here because some other team is going to give him mad money. Lots of teams looking for starters in center and Nimmo is the best FA CF on the market this year.
He's gone.
My solution, Jake Mangum, wasn't protected and he will be one of the first names called out on Rule 5 day. Dumb, dumb, dumb. They say the Mets did this because Jake is already too old to keep. That's funny. He's a hell of a lot younger than both the corner outfielders.
This leaves us to trading for someone for two years at most, because we have the answer here in the future, playing Binghamton in 2023, in Alex Ramirez.
Who to trade for?
Thoughts?
This is where Eppler et al proves whether they are successes or failures. A lot could go wrong.
Nimmo, if he stays, might launch a few more baseballs as HRs due to the shorter fence in part of right field, his pull side.
I'm thinking the Pirates might have an answer to this question.
I'm of the opinion that Marte could manage at CF until minor leaguers are ready, so finding an outfielder who plays a corner is easier to find than a CF.
Sign Conforto for corner outfielder
Pirates CF is a goodie. Vientos and Jett?
Reese my concern is, if Marte went down, who then? Not Khalil Lee, and Mangum is unprotected. Get Mauricio a CF glove.
Conforto could be a good short term answer.
We're replacing the ever-injured Brandon Nimmo with the ever-injured Michael Conforto? Stranger things have happened but normalcy would be nice (for a change).
Nick Senzel! Mauricio for Senzel.
Good trade for both teams
Guillorme plays 2B. Two reasons, with no shift an elite defensive 2Ber becomes more valuable, also a lefty hitter like Guillorme should hit better.
Let's not judge situations too quickly. Until/unless he signs elsewhere, Nimmo is ours.
And until the Rule 5 Draft is over (less than 2 weeks), so isNangum.
*Mangum.
Bill, 9 more shopping days until the winter meetings and 12 more until Rule 5 festivities.
Really like Nimmo but if his market gets silly (for me thats anything over 25mil per and 5 years) which it could considering thr lack of quality CF’s available this year, i would pony up a big contract for Trea turner and put him at 2B with Mcneil in RF and Marte in CF. The lineup would be sick and theres so many ways to build it. Probably try and pick up w better lefty masher option for DH as well and your practically done on the position player side of the house.
I'm a little suprised no one has mentioned the possibility of taking a one year flyer Bellinger. Yes he has had 2 less than spectacularseasons at the plate but worth a gample his shoulder is now healed and he also plays a solid centerfield.
Dean if Nimmo goes elsewhere, why not try Belliger for a year if he'd agree to a 1 year deal?
