When is 40=32?
Well, when the Mets have a scad of dudes hit free agency, pick up just one waived hurler, and protect no one ( not even Jake Mangum) from the December 2022 Rule 5 draft due to their not being added to the 40 man roster yesterday.
So here’ your 32 man 40 man roster, which includes Darin Ruf, Khalil Lee, and Dom Smith - with massive changes still to follow - and interesting to note, the Mets did not protect 4 dudes in their not-yet-revised Top 30 prospect list:
Junior Santos, Stanley Consuegra, Jordany Ventura, and Juan Atencio.
BIG changes are still to come. Start sculpting, Billy Eppler.

Thought this would have 32 to 40 reader comments by now LOL.
So...who the heck are we signing next, anyway.
And are we keeping either Jake?
With the payroll already passed the stratosphere, it will be hard to create flexibility of the roster. Mangum may be drafted, but he is kind of a reach. Would a team dedicate two years to him when the new CBA means any player 30 years old becomes a free agent? Doubtful.
Verlander wants Scherzer money. DeGrom wants Scherzer money+, for Scherzer years+. Ruf is a joke but Eppler can’t cut him…. Seems like everyone has money, so now what is the Mets’ advantage? For them to create flexibility, they may need some luck. Signing DeGrom but securing a secondary starter may be necessary. Letting Nimmo go may also be necessary. Cohen hadn’t shown patience with his prospects, and that bothers me. The Mets have made a stupid trade each year at the deadline; time to stop that.
Gus, many good points, and I frankly missed the 30 year old CBA free agency. It won’t be easy to rebuild a winner here. And I still want Crow back.
Lots of vacancies…..Eppler/Cohen must have a plan, right?
Still think they need to spend $$$ in the short term, so the kids can develop further.
Need at least two mid to upper rotation arms, along with Nimmo (or a suitable replacement) and more bullpen arms, at a minimum.
Mike, between atarters, relievers, and a CF to be added, that sounds like at least 8 guys to me right there, but a few of these current 32 man roster guys may be jettisoned or traded to make room for more Cohen-bought talent. I still think that if it would only have cost $2 million more to keep Givens in 2023, and they didn't, they must be thinking big. I can't imagine the Wilpons not keeping him for a net additional $2 million. A cheap reliever to keep to eat up innings.
Mets badly need another front line pitcher and multiple OFers to fill MLB and AAA rosters.
Uncle Steve is a fan and he has money. He will spend it.whether the signings work out is another story. But he will fill out the roster with solid ML players and he will probably not trade from the farm. They will be a playoff team.
