Colt Emerson
SS
1-3-22 - Joe Doyle @JoeDoyleMiLB
John Glenn (HS) SS Colt Emerson ranks as Prospects Live No. 16 overall prospect for the 2023 MLB Draft. His relative age, discerning eye, and impressive bat-to-ball help project a potential plus hitter w/advanced defensive actions.

29. Colt Emerson, SS, John Glenn HS (OH) – Emerson is a guy a lot of scouts really love, but I am more luke warm on him. He has very smooth infield actions but doesn’t have great range or a great arm so his future is probably that of an above average defensive second baseman. His swing is very much one that thrives on driving the ball inside out and using the opo gap to get his extra bases.

14. Boston Red Sox: Colt Emerson, SS, Glenn HS (OH)
Emerson is a definite Red Sox type as a left-handed-hitting infielder with advanced skills at the dish even if it’s hit over power right now.

22. Seattle Mariners: Colt Emerson, SS, John Glenn (OH)
He’s a tall, lanky shortstop who reminds me a lot of last year’s draft prospect Peyton Graham out of Oklahoma. He’s got super sonic hands at the plate and in the field. A soft glove and a solid arm, both of which should keep him at shortstop long-term. He’ll need to add more muscle at the next level, much like Jackson Holliday from last year, but his strong summer performance really put him on the map.

19. Tampa Bay Rays
Colt Emerson, SS, John Glenn
Emerson is a name that’s soaring up boards after a huge summer. He’s got lightning quick hands, both at the plate and in the field. Emerson showcased plenty of pull-side juice this summer too. He’s got a soft glove and a strong arm, both well-suited to stick at shortstop long-term. We know how much the Tampa love a high-upside prep in the first round.

COLT EMERSON SS / JOHN GLENN, OH / 2023
Rankings STATERANK: 1 / POS: 1 OVERALLRANK: 44 / POS: 14
Emerson, an Auburn recruit, has long been a steady favorite within PBR circles, and for any prospect that might have louder tools, few would ever take them over the Ohio native. A hybrid hitter who exhibits ease of adjustment from pitch to pitch, there is already a maturity to his approach and barrel accuracy that is usually rare to find in a northern hitter. Balanced from the left side, he is capable of using the whole field with some present pull side power to go along with it. Sure-handed on the infield with the potential to play any spot (along with some aptitude behind the plate), Emerson possesses some intriguing value.

SS Colt Emerson, John Glenn (OH), 2023
Performance: 8-13, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 SB, 1.534 OPS
Commitment: Auburn
Colt Emerson had one of the best performances of the week at Jupiter, demonstrating high level barrel feel and advanced hit traits against quality pitching. Emerson has a bevy of above average to plus tools, with the capacity to handle the range and arm strength requirements at shortstop. While there has been some swing and miss this summer for the Ohio native, he has also put together plenty of good ABs and shows an ability to go to the opposite field when he needs to--while turning on mistakes and driving them pullside for extra bases. Emerson will also still be under the age of 18 when the 2023 Draft rolls around, making him an extra appealing target for teams that are willing to spend on prep bats on Day 1.

41 SS
Colt Emerson
John Glenn
Emerson showcased a whole lot of tools on the circuit in 2022 with an impressive hit tool and sneaky power. The swing is anchored by lightning quick hands that have feel to all-fields with some pull-side juice. Emerson has shown the ability to get to any ball in any quadrant of the zone and slash it gap-to-gap. Emerson is largely average on the dirt, though his range and hands do show better than his average speed. He may ultimately be a second baseman, but if it's a plus hit tool, it won't matter where he plays.

He could probably slide to second since Lindor has short covered.
